Epic Games' Mark Rein, in a Q & A session attended by Joystiq Blogger Christopher Grant during the recent GDC, said that we probably "won't be seeing Unreal Engine 3 on the Revolution." Mark implied that the Unreal Engine 2 would be more than sufficient for anything the platform may demand and had yet to be informed on what the final specs for the console would be.
Mark's comments were more towards down-scaling HD projects, such as the upcoming Gears of War, for the console and cited that it would not be very cost effective. We assume that titles will eventually utilize the Unreal Engine 3 on the console, however upcoming titles created specifically with HD resolutions in mind are more than likely not going to see an incarnation on Nintendo's system.

Reggie said that the Revolution will be "easy" to port right? The Unreal 3 engine should be easy to do at a lower res. Am I missing something?

The Xbox 360 (and I'm guessing, the PS3) offer 4:3 480i/480p support as well as HD. So even if HD is nice (which is really is), and the optimal situation, I see no reason for it to be difficult to LOWER the output resolution of a game engine. PC games offer an almost unlimited number of resolutions they will run in. That little bitch from Epic's been whining about the revolution since it's been announced and just can't miss an opportunity to bad-mouth a system that doesn't even exist yet because it down-plays the very thing his company profits from... graphics.

Yeah, this doesn't make any sense. It's not an "HD-only" engine, like this guy is making it sound. Unreal 2 is nothing like Unreal 3 either. The difference is in the pixel shader quality and special effects, not the resolution. geez.

Perhaps Revolution won't have the graphics oomph to do these effects?
I don't really care, I'm getting one for the Virtual console, and the controller. I like 2d as much or better than 3d...

What I don't understand is that the Gamecube supported Unreal Engine 2.5, so why couldn't the Revolution support the next step up. Or am I wrong about the 2.5? And I wish people would stop complaining about graphics. Anyone remember Splinter Cell Chaos theory. Those graphics were amazing. I've played Perfect Dark Zero for the 360, but its just like a current-gen FPS.

The Gamecube did support the Unreal Engine 2.5, which was used in Splinter cell: chaos theory. Therefore the Revolution would be able to handle the Unreal 3 engine. I think epic is upset becasue Nintendo did not license the Unreal 3 engine. Whether if it is ture or not, the question remains, Why would a developer develop a watered down game. Especially since Epic has not had a hit game in the console market. The games that were developed for the Xbox met with mild or no success.
A developer of Epic's stature should be making the highest quality game that they can. But then again they may not care about their reputation and the fact that they may lose fans.

Correct me if I am wrong, Midway is using the Unreal 3 engine to develop a first person shooter for all three next generation platforms, PS3, Xbox360, and the Revolution.
What is going on with Epic? I think they've lost their touch.
