This is more than likely not true, but in thinking about it, I'm not sure if this would be such a bad thing. Given that the game would need multiple pathways available to the player to get from point A to point B in order for the title to retain some replay value, the focus on Spidey's web-slinging and placing him on rails could actually work for the title. If the game managed to include the free-roaming feel of Spider-Man 2 between missions, objectives, etc., to allow for those of us who love to go swinging around the city to get some type of fix, this idea wouldn't be so bad.

I'm confused. Does this mean Spider-man 3 might be in a first person view? If it is, I wanna see that on a big screen plasma TV!

Rails. . . correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that like, shoot can't remember the name, the game at all of the movie theaters and arcades that has the pedal that moves you forward? You control motion put not direction, right? So tracking spiderman, you wouldn't be able to choose which street to sling down but you would get to choose how to sling? That makes sense to me, correct me if I'm wrong.

Rails is like Killer 7 or Star Fox and most arcade shooters. The gameplay centers around shooting, not moving. It's worked with other games, so it might work with this one. The only problem I see is people expecting a certain type of game from the Spider-man franchise.

Michael, the game you are thinking of is Time Crisis, where you shoot at the screen and use a pedal to toggle between duck and attack positions. After clearing a specific area, you "fly" to the next one. You don't control the movement of your feet, thus you are on "rails", like a train track.
I hope that developers don't use the rail idea. I think it's a little too gimmicky, and doesn't give you true range of motion like we are used to in 3D environments. There is an analog stick attachment that will come standard, so control should not be an issue. The second analog stick is replicated with the Revmote, which can have additional functions when buttons are held. I don't see any problem with this setup.

An on-rails game would have you controlling the direction in which your character attacks, but not the direction in which he/she/it moves. Think of it as being on a rollercoaster - if you had a gun with you, you could fire in all directions, but you'd have to go wherever the rollercoaster tracks take you (which is JAIL, you gun-toting amusement park fiend).
Good examples are the brilliant Panzer Dragoon games and Rollercoaster Maniac 3: Loop of Inefficient Gun Control Laws.

If anybody reads the comments on IGN you'll find that this email was sent on April 1st. It was just an April Fool's joke. How can you explain needing camera control when you're on rails?

That is why David wrote, "This is more than likely not true". The post isn't so much about the news of the Spidey concept as it is an opinion on such a mechanic should it take shape.

The more I read about the revolution, the more I get excited about the controller. At first I thought it was idiotic, but the possiblities with this thing are endless if you are creative.

Unfortunately Nintendo dont have enought 3rd party support to continuously make amazing games using the controller, basically because nintendo used to treat third party developers like crap. Thts why they all left during and after the N64 era.

The first bit of that Pointless Waste of Time article is pretty embarassing, given that we now know that Red Steel is in no way on rails. And what's more - that's a good thing. This Spidey 3 that they're talking about vastly underestimates the functionality of the controller. I think these plans will be abandoned come E3, when Activision sees what they could do with the machine.
