"The player won't cost more than 25,000 yen, said Yoshihiro Mori, Nintendo's senior managing director, at a news conference in Osaka."
Lifted straight from the article, that line says it all. This means that a launch price of $199 is very likely for us here in the states, something that is sure to bring a smile to many gamers' faces (as well as a blogger or two), with a $250 price ceiling. So if we see the console for $199, should we only expect the Wiimote, nunchuk attachment, and system in the package, or do you guys still think we could see Virtual Console "credits" bundled in as well as other items? What about if it releases for $250 or the ranges between?
Press release can be found here.
[Update: Cleared price mistake. Thanks Wari0!]

About the VC feature, Nintendo would probably do what Apple does. They'd sell a card in a game/electronics store. The card has $15 (or higher) on it. You open up the VC on your Wii, and then "type" in the number.
Viola! You can now download any amount of games for $15 (or whatever you paid for the card).

I think if they keep going on about how it's to play with friends and stuff it's quite probable that they'd give away two controllers (+ 2 nunchuks). But even when I say that it sort of seems doubtful without a little extra money. Oh well, whatever the cost I know I'm getting one.

Does a 25,000 yen price necessarily mean it will be $200 in the US? The conversion may be to ~$220, but we all know that straight conversions are not all that goes into the prices. I don't think this really guarantees anything more than "lower than $250".

I think the $200 price tag is a very pleasant surprise. I had expected to see a $250 price tag on my Wii, bundled with some additional accessories, software or virtual console credits. At $200, they will be keeping the bundle basic, but that will allow you to choose additional games and accessories on your own
Also by sticking a $199 price tag on it, having a price tag "one hundred-anything" adds that much more to the consumers impression of value over the $399, $499, $599 price tags of other systems. With such an accessible price point, it will easily attract parents, gamers, and that elusive non-gamer. Also, that elusive Bigfoot.

That $199 argument holds true for a bunch of people. My own brother (35) may just buy a DS (heavy) instead of a Lite, just to save that small chunk of change.

I'm willing to bet that if the $199.99 pricetag happens, it WILL include VCcredits for the console.
Nintendo loses [next to nothing] by giving out VCcredits. And it serves them advertise the virtual console, help people get the hang of it and all that.
Even microsoft gives out free Microsoft Points when they purchase a year of subscription.

Actually, that's in Japan. They said it won't cost more than $250 in the US. Read the Joystiq article:http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/25/wii-wont-be-more-than-250-says-nintendo/1#c1548176

1. Has Nintendo even hinted towards free credits or is this just some massive assumption?
2. I'll assume launch will be $249, then I won't be dissapointed. There is nothing in that article that suggests $199. $220 could easily be rounded up to 250.

I'd like to see one of those VC controllers bundled with the system. That would be a great gift

it would be good if it came with a game demo (or maybe the wii sports bundle) to get people used to using the controller before diving in to more serious games. i'm super psyched for the system, but i'd love to have a bit of a warm-up before tackling mario or metroid.

Wayne: Nintendo has inteed hinted at free virual console credits.
Last year, back in E3 when "Revolution" was revealed, and they revealed the Virtual Console, Iwata (IIRC) stated that there would be a certain cost, but theres no reason why the couldnt be free at times.
It sounded like he would bundle, I dunno, Super Mario World when you bought Mario Galaxy, or Metroid (NES) when you bought Metroid Prime 3.
He even implied that we could see freebies in the holidays, and i wouldnt be surprised if thats part of connect24.

I see no reason why nintendo will not follow suit and offer muitiple options on launch day - except they will not offer a discounted crappy version, it will just include more stuff.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!
There goes the correction alarm.
Iwata has stated only that CERTAIN DOWNLOADS will be free. You know, things that they've suggested like game extensions and extras. Those might be the things that he "can't see why they couldn't be free". He is in no way implying a little card thingy that gets you free credits on something they would charge for.
I'm not saying that it won't happen, I'm just saying that this is all something that's still just - what's that magic word? - Speculation.

I think the system will be $199 because I remember someone from Nintendo recently saying look at our price history and ,if I didn't look up false information, Gamecube N64, and super Nintendo all had a launch at $199.

Why would we/you keep speculating on price that wobbles between $200 and $250? They are giving away the sports game and the bundles are out in another week or 2.
