We've already reported on Nintendo's ability to be jerks, so why would we return to such a fresh and extremely painful topic? Release date speculation, of course! The guys (and gals) over at Gaming Target took it upon themselves to take this latest press release, by command of Nintendo, under a magnifying glass and analyze the dates, coming up with the idea that October 2nd will see the launch of the Wii. Their logic breaks down like this: "The fourth quarter begins on October 1. Now look at the list. At least one game is released every Monday in the fourth quarter except for the following dates: October 2, November 20 and November 27. November 27 is after Black Friday, so it's out. November 20 is after the launch of the PS3, so that's out too. That leaves us with October 2."
Well, OK, not a bad theory, but why wouldn't, or couldn't, the console launch alongside any of the DS games to be released? Why couldn't the console launch on October 23rd? Personally, we'd like to see it launch October 2nd, which would provide ample time for shoppers to get one and prevent those pesky holiday shortage disasters we've seen during past launches.

The only thing this blog post has been able to predict with any accuracy is the picture of the way I would look after reading this hairbrained theory.

I think they're assuming (possibly incorrectly) that Nintendo wouldn't want to overshadow the release of DS games. It's like when a lesser summer movie is released, they try to work around the big box office draws to maximize profits. You didn't see too many movies opening the same weekend as the Star Wars prequels and you probably won't see games for another Nintendo platform release the same day as the Wii (not to mention Metroid, Zelda, and a bunch of other big games).

One theory that I saw over at the Nintendo forums that supports the October 2nd release date is that we've known the release date ever since we knew the name Wii. If you take a closer look at the name, you can see VVII, which, in Roman Numerals would be 5-5-1-1, or 10-2. October 2nd! Coincedence? I think... possibly? :-P Heres the original theory.

Aren't these the same people that tricked us with the Luigi Code? Just how far can we trust them after that? I say take it all with a very big grain of salt.

Who is to say that Nintendo isn't jerking us around like a ragdoll. I think it is reasonable to think of a Oct. 2nd, and to be honest I like the idea proposed by Ryan (V-V-I-I). I just think that Oct. 2nd may be a little too soon for the release, but I sure as hell won't complain if they do decide to go with that date.

I can't believe people are still entertaining the notion that the Wii will be released in October, let alone October 2nd. It's all just incredibly wishful thinking if you ask me. If the PS3 isn't coming out until November 17th, there's no way in heck we're getting the Wii that far in advance.
Pretty harebrained way to arrive at a release date, as if Nintendo is somehow bound by some unwritten law and HAVE to release their new system on a certain day. They can release it whenever they want.

Well, if you look at the list, there's a big gap between 11/13 and 12/4, and otherwise new titles are being released weekly across the board. Does this gap mean something?

An Oct 2nd date would be righteous (Ahem), it would finalize the painfully long moribund of the Gamecube. I do look forward to Paper Mario 2, but that experience will probably be on the Wii for me.
The sooner The Big N releases this thing the better. Of course this also means the sooner I get my greedy little hands on Zelda and the like.

Ok, October 2nd just can not be.
This is the same day Gears of War, Forza Motorsport 2 and Viva Pinata are rumored to be released as well.
Looks like GoW has been changed to TBD though: http://www.xboxic.com/news/1278

Even with those 360 release dates, Oct 2 still sounds totally plausible. And the GoW change to TBD just adds plausibility. MS would want to release a big game to combat the Wii launch. Forza and Pinata would be perfect counterlaunches for Wii. They'd probably want to save Gears to use closer to PS3.

You are saying it'll launch Black Friday? That's a week after the PS3 launch, isn't Nintendo committed to launching before Sony?
I'm saying Oct 20 in Japan, Oct 22 in US, and Nov 3 in Europe.

It's going to launch in JP and US in synch... dunno if they will with EU or not though. The only thing that doesn't make sense with an Oct. 2nd launch date to me is that it's on a Monday. The VAST majority of Nintendo's systems (including all but one or two in the last 5 years) have had Sunday launches. I remember reading a few days ago on CAG regarding the press release, someone wrote this:
"[regarding the release dates listed] Remove the duplicates, and add the numbers together: 9+16+23+30+6+13+4 = 101. The Wii will launch on 10/1, October 1st, which is not only the first day of the fourth quarter, but also a Sunday, the traditional launch day for Nintendo consoles."
I honestly believe that that's the type of thing that Nintendo would have meant to encode, and it seems very plausible. Although I will admit that I like the VVII idea.
So which is it? The 1st or the 2nd?
...either works for me.

There are 290 words in the article, and he 290th day of this year is Oct. 17. The only problem is that this would be a Tuesady, which doesn't really follow the pattern of any Nintendo system or game launch. But hey, you never know. ;)
