According to a forum post over at the official Nintendo boards, the latest issue of Game Informer will have a piece on Call of Duty 3 where it is said that online multiplayer for the game will feature 24 player matches via Xbox Live on the 360 and PS3 online for the PS3. The Wii, however, will support the lowered number of participants by allowing only up to 16 players to battle over Wi-Fi. Now, without a scan or any other kind of corroboration with the initial post, we're forced to chalk this up to rumor at the moment and will update you as news further develops.
[Update: Go Nintendo received word that the information is in fact in the magazine, but is a misprint. Instead, the grim truth is that the game will feature no online multiplayer support on the Wii. Thanks Marc!]

24/16 count is low by current PC FPS standards. Battlefield 2 support 64 per server and everyone is hoping 128 support for BF 2142.
What these low numbers me be hinting at is the lack of central game servers. Much like Halo, one player's console is choosen as the host for the game. Due to network capacity and processing speed of the console the numbers are lower. Since the Wii doesn't have the power of the 360/PS3, it probably cant host as many players.
IMHO, having the user host the game in this manner stinks. Anyone who plays Halo will tell you that 16 players battles are very laggy as a result.
Hopefully this model of user-hosted games will not be used for all Wii games. It really stinks, I'd rather pay for the company to host reliable servers, than lag out.

Activision reacts to the rumor. Truth is, there's NO online play for CoD3 for Wii.

To hell with it. I'll just buy it for PS3. I'll still rent it to try out the control scheme, though.

Now they are saying on IGN that there will be NO third party online until 2007. That Nintendo is withholding the online Dev libraries from third parties. This is really bad. I hope its not true but knowing Nintendo, they had to start screwing up a great thing at some point.

Eh, that's what I expect from Nintendo. They are not an environment and have never been an environment healthy to 3rd parties. (I mean, after 2 years.. besides FF3, Phoenix Wright, and Trauma Center, what 3rd party DS games have been sucessful)
