With the slightly higher than expected price of the Wii, consumers further lamented Nintendo's insistence on squeezing us for every penny we could find under the cushions. The Opera browser would cost twenty dollars or more, and after they promised it to be free? Blasphemy! But soon, news from Japan came that over there, they could download Opera for free, until June 2007. Yet, confusion reigned. What about us, we cried! And moaned. And whined. And apparently, Nintendo took note.
We've been on top of the situation, but now it's confirmed in this official press release from Opera: the browser will be absolutely gratis for all regions until June of next year. That means us early adopters actually get a little bonus, whereas normally the late-comers and lazy gamers always get the best deals. Hah! Serves you right, luddites!
And look! Ecstatic Wii-loving swimmers! Wooooo!
[Thanks, Nushio!]

So is this "free until June 2007" as in a free version that will stop working in June 2007, after whcih you'll need to actually buy it (i.e. once you are hooked on using the net from your wii and cant live without it!)?

That is such a joke...first you've got red steel which keeps the "steel" part ditching the red part and now a paying browser???
Frankly since those ninty shows i've kinda lost excitement about the wii...it suddenly seems like a M$ machine.250euros, no choice on bundled game, only 1 nunchuk, 60euros for a second one...
Money money money...

Matt (#2) - No, you get it for free, permanently, if you get your Wii before June. People who buy the Wii after that point have to pay for the browser as an add-on. At least that's my understanding.
I'm not sure what the issue is... I don't know anyone reading this board who is waiting till the end of next summer to buy a Wii!

#5 b0bk,
Yeah, why do they think they can charge whatever they want? Just because the demand is high they think they can make a profit on their products. What the hell are they thinking? Everything should be free and cheeseburgers should rain from the sky whenever I'm hungry.

If they were MS, there'd be no game bundled at all. And can the world please collectively stop using the dollar sign for MS? We know it's out to make money. It's a corporation. That's what they do.

The source i read (IGN) said Free to Install
If it was a subscription service, that would negate their whole claim of Free Online, right?

Hey, I'm only getting one late cuz Nintendo refused to launch the Wii in the color we first saw it in!
Nintendo better launch it in Black, SOON! Simply cuz most online polls I saw, had Black and White in the top two colors people wanted (with Platinum in 3rd, Lime Green in 4th, and Red in last). And guess what, Black always won!
I'm hoping for a 3 month gap between launch day and announcement of a Black Wii (and/or more colors).

Why does anyone care? If I want Opera I'll download it. Wii is a game machine not a PC... I have PC for that.

Opera has browsers for more applications then only pc. And those are pay-to-use. It is not nintendo that asks money for the browser, it is opera. Because I think the people who have putted the effort in this project don't deserve to live only from ads.
Be a little bit flexible please, and show some intrest in the whole industry :)

This is great news!
I think this will probably convince a lot of non-gamers, and maybe some non-internet users to get online.
I would like Nintendo to demonstrate how the browser will look and operate...are we able to scroll pages just by gesturing the wiimote up and down? can we navigate back and forward by gesturing left and right?
