And the answer? There are too many intelligent, dedicated people. As such, way too many gamers knew exactly what moment the local EB Games and Gamestop would be taking preorders, and our little town of Gainesville didn't seem to be of high priority for those little gremlins over at corporate.Vowing to skip my morning class, I awoke at 7 AM to get ready for a preorder. I brushed my teeth, threw on my awesome Nintendo hoodie, and headed out the local mall. I arrived at around 8 AM...surely that would be early enough! After all, Wii allocations were being estimated in the 30-40 range, as Nintendo expects to have many times the number of PS3 units at launch. This is what I saw at arrival:

Were I to jump in line, I would be number 21. I ran over to the Gamestop across the mall; a similar line had already formed. I decided to throw in my lot with the EB crowd, since several representatives I had spoken with at the Fusion Tour had mentioned allocations of thirty or above. Then the employee came on out and essentially slapped us in the face: eleven units would be presold. This very store had presold twelve PS3s. Absolutely ridiculous. Here's the dividing line:

Ah, well. We all wanted the experience of camping out in the cold anyway, right? (shiver)

Those two after #11, do not sadden yourselfs. There will copious amounts of Wii's. This is just hype at it's best. I'm willing to bet a dinar that the entire planet and the inhabitants of mars will get a Wii.

I feel the college town pain - I live in the epicenter of UW-Madison, and people were camping out yesterday in front of every store in town (apparently according to GameStop employees). I got screwed out of a Wii because of it too. Damn you J-O-B!
I got to my GameStop at 9am, choose the one farest from campus (but still within 25 miles) that was also outdoors (38 F degrees and windy), and still met the higher education crowd square in the face. I was 35 out of 34.
I'm going to go cry some more now. *sniff*

I went to FYE a couple weeks ago and they specifically told us that they DID NOT believe they would be getting enough launch units, and that they believed they would only be able to fill the demand on the 2nd or 3rd shipments. DON'T DO IT!!!

I've already garnered a few willing souls to brave the wintery nights. Best Buy is the plan, though Target and Circuit City remain options if stuff goes wrong...we were thinking 24 hours, with some alterations depending on how many people are already waiting out front. Find me on Facebook ^^

Got mine - almost didn't. I didn't camp, but it took me 2 1/2 hours and an operative on the phone with the gamestop website pulled up to find a store that was so remote that it had one left at 12:30pm. I was #16 out of 16, and there was a person who came in behind me, if I would have been 30 seconds later, I wouldn't have gotten it.

I went to the gamestop in Boca Raton, FL on Glades. They had 30 units, I showed up 1 hour early and was 11th in line. By the time they opened they still had units left, I'm guessing they sold out around 1 hour after opening. I didn't really even have to get there early. I felt bad for the few folks that camped out there for 6 hours ahead of schedule. Better safe than sorry i suppose.

You guys suck for not taking pictures at the Gamestop. :P I stand by my decision, though, as it got me a pre-order. I got there around 7:30. We only had a miserable 8 units over at there, of which I got the seventh. The pre-order numbers really made no sense, though. What did we do to anger the great and powerful GameStop gods?

I got mine! 7th in line. Our store had 14 units with about 25 people in line when they announced it. I spoke with a guy that had also tried to get pre-orders for the PS3 and he stated that the Wii line was about twice as long as the PS3. There was 9 people at one EB, 6 at another, and just 10, and the Gamestop near by as well. With the 1 store, the Wii had just as much people in line as 3 stores for the PS3.

Its cool finding fellow gainesville gamers online. I also couldn't get mine from gamestop so I went to fye in the same mall and they were taking reservations! And I was #17 on the list. But who knows when they will get 17 consoles. But this is just a safety net. I'll try my luck with the midnight launch in best buy. And this time I'm waiting way early!

Huh... so, other than one report of eight, the initial post's eleven is the smallest allocation?
I pre-ordered shortly after the launch date/price were announced, at Game Crazy. I was number eleven :P
Plus, buying there, I get FREE RENTALS. Go Game Crazy! Of course, I might also have a job there soon, so I'm a little biased (of course, the job would help quite a lot in actually paying for the Wii in a month)

Over here in the UK we've been able to pre-order for about 3 weeks before you could start yesterday. Ordered mine online, and I'm pretty confident I'll be getting one! Don't worry - we should all have one for Christmas!

Not everywhere in the UK is pre-ordering yet Andy, as far as i know. I don't think game has even started taking orders yet so i don't think a lot of places know their allocation amounts for the uk yet. You may have pre-ordered your online but if they don't know their stock allocations you may still not get one on launch day. and there's no guarantee it will arrive in the post on launch day either - especially if you order it from somewhere like play.com who have to ship it from Jersey.
So i plan to pre-order from a store and order my games and stuff online, so atleast i'll have the virtual console to keep me busy. hopefully pre-ordering from stores over here won't be as much of a pain as it has been for the americans.

I was wondering if you can do a brief article on the possibility of playing wii multiplayer locally. ie. without a router can you play someone else on another wii in another room.
similar to ds-ds functionality.
This would be extremely versitile in a Residence hall at College!

Lol, everyone but my town got pwned looks like. At my Gamestop, there were 8 pple in line when the store opened, and there were 14 wii's for preorder, On top of this, I arrived 15 mins before the gamestop opened.
And it is to some extent a college town :P. It is Merced, home of the University of California, Merced. Looks like not all college town living sucks. :-)

I go to Mississippi State University, and arrived at my GameStop at 8:45, and i ended up being 14 out 15 for pre-orders....I thought I was 17, so I was pretty ecstatic.
As it was described to me, our GS is in small if you look at the population size, but big in volume...Starkville,MS is only 22,000...without the population of the 16,000 student body.

Believe me, I can feel your pain. I have lived in a college all of my life, and since my wife is studying to be college Professor, it looks like I will be living in a college town for a long time to come.
Thankfully, I managed to get a Wii pre-order, just barely, at the second store I hit. I was that poor guy right after the cut-off at the first store.
As for the people who had to be in class so they could get a pre-order... we had some hardcore fans in our line skipping class to get theirs.

Why are they all wearing T-shirts? Cold? In Florida? I don't believe you. It was pretty cold in northern Virginia (around 45), but I'm not complaining. I'm glad I wasn't waiting since 7AM in someplace like Maine.
Mine had 11 units too. I think the problem might occur when there are too many stores in one location. But I would have thought stores in my area would get a pretty large number of units. Guess I was wrong!
