Kotaku has received a couple of emails from Wii owners reporting of already receiving DRE (disc-read error) messages. Some have even reported that their Wii has become bricked and won't even power on! What horror! Have any of you out there in Wii Fanboy land been the unfortunate recipient of a painful message declaring that your Wii will not read your discs or even turn on anymore?
[Thanks Naruhodou!]

I actually got a DRE the first few times I put Wii Sports in. I got it to work after about three trys and it hasn't happened since. Still, I can't say it's not a little worrisome

One thing I think might have contributed to the one (and only) problem I had was bringing it in from outside (FREEZING) and immediately hooking it up.
As everyone knows condensation can and does form when something cold is warmed up. I gave mine a few minutes to come up to room temp and tried again....
Totally fine.
Best. Purchase. Ever. ;)

lol, i got a disc read error once but it was just because i put the disc in wrong (top of disc facing left)... i freaked out for 5 seconds and then decided to try again the other way and it worked.
The system actually froze on me once. I hit the virtual console button and for some reason my internet went out and the system at first kept trying to load but nothing. i'd try hitting home but it wouldn't let. then randomly it turned off. i unplugged and replugged and it works perfect now (though to nintendo's defense i will say that i had only installed one of 2 of the updates at that point. after the second all was smooth sailing)

I have gotten the disc read error a few times when playing WiiSports. I'd click on one of the game icons and then instead of loading the game, I received the error. I'm hoping its the disc (which looks very good on the bottom) because when I play Red Steel I don't get any errors.

I've had no problems yet, and I've played SEVERAL hours so far. I've logged 4 hours in Zelda, countless hours in Wii Sports along with my wife and 5 year old son (which loves bowling and golf). Actually, my son forgot to put the strap on once, and the Wiimote went sailing through the air and landed on hard wood flooring. It suffered no casualities. The first thing I did when I booted it up though, was to get on the internet and I downloaded all the updates. I'll let you all know if anything happens though.

No.. No problems. Never had a disc read error yet.
I will say that when I was playing Red Steel, my game locked up between the loading screens, and I couldn't turn it off.
After about 10 seconds, my Wii just shut off, and I turned it back on and it was working fine.

Wii Annoyance: can't store more than 512 mbs of VC downloads. Have to erase and redownload as necessary to "manage your memory".
Note: You don't have to rebuy, just redownload. NO need to buy a massive SD card since they are only used for game saves or viewing photos/videos.

Well my experience was bitter sweet. I set up my Wii with the greatest of care and did a the system software updates. Everything was going super smooth and i was glad to because i was waiting in line 8pm from the day before. So i put in Wii Sports in and i heard loud clicking sound then the error came up saying "Unable to read the disk" i pretty much collapsed when this happend. I then tried Red Steel and the same thing happened "Unable to read the disk". At this point i was miffed that Nintendo would release a console that won't work!! Anyways i called nintendo and they said they'll ship me a new one geez i hope it doesn't take 2 weeks.
Either way My friend got a Wii to and it works just fine. Both my disks Wii Sports and Red Steel Work Just fine. I kind of expected this the employee at the best buy i was at said there might be a 33% crash rate on these things and he tried to get me to get a "extended warrenty" i brushed him off because I thought Nintendo would make sure all units worked 100%.
However i still love Nintendo. :D

No DREs, but i'm having one hell of a time with Internet connection
The stupid thing is it worked the first time, i connected, it was all cool, i got the 2 firmware upgrades (which enabled Shop channel and SD Cards), then, poof
Gone
Even stupider is that its not giving me a consistent error code, so i know that its an abnormal problem, which in turn merits an unorthodox solution (Of course, jacking around with IP settings is fun for me, so i take this as a mixed curse)
Thank god for this long weekend, which will be spent up to my neck in Wireless Configuration Jargon and considerable lengths of Ethernet Cable
And yes, the Wii's Power button is a Digital Power button,
So if the CONSOLE freezes (i believe game freezes can be escaped through the Home button), but if there is Channel freeze, you must unplug (or, in my case, hit the switch on the surge protector)

For the wireless connection, I thought it was my Wii causing an internet connection problem. I have WEP encryption on my router, and I couldn't find my access point in the wireless settings. It ended up being my wireless router. This particular brand has a problem with not allowing wireless connections sometimes and you have to unplug it for a few seconds. After that, I haven't had any problems accessing the internet with the Wii, or laptop ;).

Have tried five different games in mine (two of mine and three of a friend's) and no DREs or any other problems. WiiConnect and VC functionality also stellar (and pretty damn awesome to boot). Once, my Wii did hang up upon exiting the Mii channel, but it restarted itself in 10 seconds or so and everything has been right since then.

I played Wii Sports, Zelda, and Super Monkey Ball with no problems. Then I put in Rayman, and got a black screen saying unable to read disk.
I ejected the disk, reinserted it, hear a couple of beeps from the drive, and then the Wii locked up. I could still eject the disk, but to get anything to display, I had to remove the AC and plug it back in (the power button was unresponsive). The lock up happened every time I put in the Rayman disk (I tried 5 or 6 times).
I exchanged the Rayman CD today, and now everything seems to be fine.

The first error I got, I was playing zelda, just got to the forest temple miniboss, the monkey guy where you have to knock him off the tower things. Anyways, I hit him a couple times, and I think he was supposed to die here, but it just froze, and i heard a tone thing. Couldn't press home, nothing. So I rebooted and luckily i saved before the boss. Anyone else get this problem?

Got a DRE the first time I put Zelda in. Ejected it, put it back in and it worked fine. Same thing happened this morning too. I guess it's a little annoying but Red Steel and Wii Sports work fine. Hopefully it's a problem that can be fixed with a firmware update.

I know that most, if not all of you, register your consoles, but make sure you do for the Wii. When you do, you extend your one year warranty into 1yr and 90 days. Just three more months, but it's nice for free.

So far no DRE's *knock on wood*. My guess (like some one said) since it was cold in most areas, if you set your Wii up the minute you got home, the equipment was "overwhelemd". Sorta like if your body temp is low, then suddonly jump, you probally will go into shock. I for one didn't set it up the second I got home, I walked into the house and had breakfast, THEN played all day. =P

My Wii was a power-on brick! strangest thing. It would turn on but the Wiimotes wouldn't connect and i couldn't get any video/audio to display!! seems i'm the only one that has had this happen to their console yet. Glad no one else got their Wii home only to not be able to play it at all! Nintendo is being super sweet and shipped me a new Wii today to arrive on wednesday! Nintendo service FTW! and if you guy haven't registerd your Wii's on nintendo.com do so now! you get a 90 day extension on the warrenty!

Mine has intermitent problems reading the disc. It's happened about 4 times. On 2 of the occasions, I've heard clicking noises when it tries to read the discs. One time it was with Wii Sports, the other with Zelda.
The other two times I didn't hear the clicking noise but jsut got a message that it couldn't read the disc and check the manual. I've been able to reset the unit each time by unplugging it for 5 minutes.
I've emailed Nintendo and I'm going to be firm with requesting a new unit. I just hope the system doesn't go dead before I get one. The Wii is kinda addicting.

Never a Disc Error for me (know on wood). Although i think i might be the only one to have a Wiimote error. Randomly all my Wiimotes stoped working. All the blue lights would blink instead of just the 1 for each controler. I tried sinking, looking in the manual FAQ, online. Coulding find anything. Then eventualy it just started working again. Im so afraid its going to do it again and i wont know the cause. Anyone know what to do ? Have this problem too?

No DRE's yet, fortunately, but I did run into a problem yesterday while loading up Wii Sports where is suddenly stopped "seeing" the controller. I tried resyncing several times, as well as new batteries, but nothing. I unplugged the Wii for a few seconds, plugged it back in, and eveything was fine. Really hoping it was just a 1-time fluke.

I got my Wii yesterday. Has been smooth sailing. Wireless setup was easy, and I use Mac filtering and WEP 128bit. Funny thing is I don't think the wireless NIC in the Wii is all that powerful. There are about 5 open WLAN connections in my neighborhood but the Wii only detected mine.
Thank you to the person who said to register, I always forget to do that.
I did have 1 DRE. I was ready to play Wii Sports, poped the disk in and got the DRE message. Luckly I had read some forum posts about sticking the disk in backwards. Ejected it and turned it around and BAM worked and I could breath again.

I get a 'insert startup disc' error when I power mine on, and I can't get any further. Nintendo is shipping me a replacement... supposedly. I called them Monday and it still hasn't shipped as of Wednesday.
Here's what the error looks like.

Mine is for the most part good. Zelda and wii sports work fine, the only problem was that once i downloaded both the updates i tried to go to wii shop and it started to load and it kept loading and loading for about 15 minutes. IDK if this is my system or my connection, but i bet i can figure it out. Other than that, best purchase i have ever made =)
