After about 24 hours of pure, unadulterated gaming bliss, one Wii launch winner found out, the hard way, that the wrist strap isn't the shining beacon of defense one might have initially thought. During a game of Wii Sports: Bowling, the controller slips and snaps the Wiimote's wrist strap, sending the now deadly plastic missile right into the 60" television, cracking the glass something fierce. While one might argue any aspect of the catastrophe, the fact of the matter is that, in the wrong hands, the Wiimote can be dangerous. We advise you never let anyone touch yours. Ever.

Maybe it's best to stick with a good ol CRT when gaming with the Wii. The controller would have a harder time breaking the thick glass.

I tested this theory with my own wii controller, and even holding the wii-mote like you are SUPPOSED to hold it, and simply letting go of it after swinging hard, the wii-mote is more likely to hit you in the face than fly at the TV. The only way I can speculate this possibly happening is if you're swinging the remote by the strap, and if you're doing that, you deserve to have it snap and break something.

I can't even conceive of how that would happen. How hard was he swinging the controller? Bad news about the TV though, although I think people who know this guy should take my advice; never let him hold anyone's baby.

Ok this story should seriously introduced and swallowed with a grain of salt. The initial picture posted by the guy that broke his tv showed scuffing on the screen near the scratch as though the screen took multiple hits. It also appeared as if the strap was cut. Not only that but it was cut in a place that wouldn't even be where it meets the controller.
The string they are using is a very high tech new Dupont fiber that gets used for car keyfobs and other applications that require a very durable string. You can swing the hell out of a wiimote by thee strap and it's not gonna break in 100 years.
This is a clear cut case of some kid breaking his dad's tv because either a) he wasn't wearing the strap as is instructed in about 100 places and then cutting the string so he can blame it on nintendo. or b) screwing around and falling into the screen and then deciding to cut the string and still blame it on the nintendo.
My guess is the wiimote never even hit the screen, it broke in some other manner and they just used their wiimote as a scapegoat.

I think it's pretty obvious that this complaint is as manufactured as they come. I've been using a Nintendo wrist strap that I was given at Comic Con on my DS Lite for months now, and while the thing LOOKS fragile it's tough as hell and I'm sure that if I tested it my DS's case would break long before the strap did.
Gamer plays game without wrist strap.
Gamer is flailing around like a moron for +10 Hilarity Points.
Gamer accdentally lets go of controller and it smashes screen.
Gamer puts strap on controller and then cuts it so it looks like it broke.
Gamer throws pity party on internets to try to get Ninty to buy him a new TV.
That is, if the controller is even to blame. Dude might have broke his TV months ago in a totally unrelated accident and is just blaming Nintendo now to try to get a free TV.

You would have to be swinging pretty hard to snap the the strap, sounds farfetched

Who are these people?
When I've bee playing my wii I've been standing and making the motions and getting into it but how hard do you have to be mimicing a bowling ball throw to cause that much damage?
People need to calm down a little here.

My worries about the strap center around the thinness of the string -- sawing it back and forth through the nunchuk connector is going to result in a few broken straps. But after just one day? I too suspect sabotage. Or maybe he's just really, really unlucky.
Either way, I bet this kid is grounded.

I think what people are forgetting, is that it doesn't matter if you have a strap around your wrist, you still need to hold onto the controller. The strap is only there as a back up, not as the sole retention device. If the strap breaks and te controller flies out of someone's hand, its because they weren't holding on to the controller like they should have been in the first place.

I agree, you have to be insane to swing it that hard in the first place. This is an unreasonable argument. You cant blame nintendo for your distructive behavior.

After playing for a few hours today, I think the bigger issue is that the strap doesn't work that well. I don't know if it needs to be bigger, smaller, or sticky in some way but while playing it flew right around the end of the Wii Remote before I knew it.
Now, that being said, I'm not going to be swinging it around by the strap or anything dumb like that. Parents should definitely heed this warning though since the kiddies can be kind of unpredictable.
(oh...and the strap that the guys at IGN broke seemed to break where you would expect it...not in the middle of the braided cord like the random forum poster)

#3,
Dude, I read your post too late. I let this guy hold my baby and he threw her through 2 t.v.s and a plate glass window. She's fine though.

Remove the strap. It gives you a false subconscious feeling that it will protect you if you let the remote go. You are actually less likely to let it go if you are subconsciously thinking: "dont let go, dont let go"
