Certainly, the Wii isn't having the technical issues that the Xbox 360 had at launch. Still, no batch of hardware is without defect, and scattered reports from around the country bring several issues into the harsh light of reality. The first issue, and perhaps most prevalent, is a recent WiiConnect24 update causing recurrent error codes for any and all online functionality. It only happens to a few, causing error codes 110213 and 32002 (how many errors can this thing have?). The solution? If you don't mind losing saved data (and most importantly, Virtual Console games, which are tied to a specific system), you can contact Nintendo and they'll send you a new unit within 3 to 4 business days. The other is a bit trickier; you'll have to contact Nintendo and have them send you a shipping label, with which you may send your Wii off to repair-land. This option will take at least two weeks, so it's best avoided.
Another problem seems to stem not from the Wii, but from the power supply and adapter. If you have a voltmeter handy (and you should!) you can check if the adapter if properly outputting power. If you believe this is the problem, there's a handy fix-it-yourself solution: while the Gamecube power supply doesn't quite fit into the Wii, you can make it fit. Here's some advice from reader Jay:
"I took a knife and bent out the plastic sides in order to get it to fit into the Wii. Make sure to put positive w/ positive and negative w/ negative, which is listed on the the back of the brick. But, if you're lazy, the flat (read: not round/circular) side goes in to side which has like and angled cut off piece. Well lo and behold, the red standby light turned on and the Wii worked! [By the way], the modded adapter sill works in the Gamecube, but you may have to tape it in to make sure it doesn't fall out."
Rock on, Jay. Are you guys having any other problems, and if so, do you have some possible solutions?

I am currently playing Twilight Princess. This games is amazing. However my nunchuck attachment that came bundled with my system cannot register a "thrust" (I am absolutely sure, I nearly threw my arm out of socket trying). It still registers side to side movement so I will still be able to play just cant do this new move. Therefore I am stuck on the part of the game where you learn the "shield attack" and can go no further. You can only get out of this mode if you successfully perform the new attack, only restart from last save. Good thing I went to bed last night before learning this attack because I am fresh off a save and won't be losing any progress.
Oh and did I mention that every store anywhere near my house is out of the nunchuck attachment. Yeah. Good times.

My current problem is an Error Code 220602 when trying to get to the Wii Shop/WiiConnect24 EULA page. My internet connection tests fine, and I was able to download the firmware updates, but I absolutely can't get past this step, and thus can't download anything. Nintendo hasn't been too helpful yet, although the forums seem to suggest that it's a router issue, and that adding the Wii to my DMZ might help, but still... it's a little annoying.
Games work fine, though. And Zelda is amazing.

Hey IJ, I had that same problem. I had a crappy Linksys wireless router that would drop packets and connection all the time. I was able to download updates and connect, but no Virtual Console. I decided to buy a $40 Belkin 802.11G and it worked flawlessly with the Wii. No dropped connections and I now am the proud owner of Sonic and Mario 64.

The warmth that you Wii has from having connect24 on is cuased by the constant wifi connection. I have this similar warmth on that USB adapter to use my ds lite, and have never had an issue wiht it melting down. A simply solution for those who wish to take caution is to set the system to standby mode. You will still be able to recieve messages and updates, just not while you are sleeping.

TO FINALLY SETTLE IT:
The slot only lights up when you recieve updates from WiiConnect24 and when the system turns only but only for a little bit. I have called and they have told me this. Also, can anyone confirm this news they told me when they said I would be shipped a new console. Apparently, I can't copy my saves since they are linked to the system. Fact or fiction?

Ok, I have the 110213 problem. It's not as bad as it sounds. My wife and I are currently enjoying the crap out of some Zelda, Wii Sports and Red Steel; the only thing I can't do is go to the Wii Shop Channel. Not only is Nintendo sending me out a new Wii while I get to keep mine and is shipping it UPS Red, I don't have to worry about game saves either. There is a place in the system settings under Data Management where you can copy your game saves over to SD card. I have one (got me a 2GB card from NewEgg for $35 shipped) so I'm set. They even send it in a prepaid shipping box so I don't have to pay for shipping to send my old console back. They take down your credit card info for insurance in case you don't send the old Wii back. They give you 21 days to send it back. Nintendo couldn't have possibly offered better service on this; I'm extremely pleased.

My wi-fi connection was really slow and errored out a lot until I changed the Wireless Channel on my Router to 11. Now it works great.
Also, Kevin, The slot only glows when you are inserting a disc or WiiConnect24 is operating. If it doesn't glow when inserting a disc, check with Nintendo support.

To #3... I too had a 220602 error. I scoured the net for answers and did come across a fix. If you have WEP enabled, try temporarily disabling WEP, configure a network connection on the Wii to use it without WEP. You should THEN be able to access the EULA. Once that is done, you can re-set WEP on your router and switch the Wii to use the appropriate connection.
Hope this helps.

I don't have broadband (yet, soon hopefully)... but I decided on a whim last night to see if I could poach a Wi-Fi signal from anywhere nearby. One of my neighbors has their station protected, but the church behind us apparently doesn't. It passes the connection test, but it seems the signal is too weak for the console to get through the update process without timing out/losing the connection.

Check and see if your wireless access point is using ANY kind of security encoding, and, failing that, reset the router (had the same problem and this worked)

Co-sign on the 110213. I contacted customer support, told them the error number, and the woman said, "Stop right there. That's all I need to hear."
Same deal as #12. Relatively harmless. I get to keep this one until I get the new one. They're overnighting it, so I'll get it tomorrow. The woman on the phone was amazingly courteous. Of course, I'd rather it worked fine out of the box, but this was the best possible solution.
And I can store all the Miis my girlfriend and I spent hours creating on the Wiimote, so that's pretty hot.

Well, I had the problem of my AC adapter dieing, and I didn't have a Gamecube's adapter. I got Nintendo to send me a new one, but I wanted to play it before then, so I thought of a way to fix it. I hooked up a regular 12volt lawnmower/car battery to it and it works like a charm. I just want to add a vote to the "changing the router's channel" solution. I was completely unable to connect to the wii store, and was barely able to update my wii, until I changed my channel from the default 6 to 11. Now I connect in seconds without fail. I had this problem in two seperate locations with two seperate and different routers, and this solution solved both of them. I'm no expert, but I think it might have something to do with interference.

About Zelda : Twilight Princess,
The 'nunchuck' isn't used for thrusting. Read the manual.
It's only used for the spin attack. To thrust: press forward on the control stick then swing the REGULAR controller.
Anyway, I'm having trouble with the Wi-fi on the Wii.
It detects my wireless access point fine. It successfully tests it. Then it goes into autoupdate (this sucks). It doesnt do anything from this point on.
I left the update feature on for hours (because you cant exit and arent supposed to turn it off). No progress.
So i just shut it off. Same thing happens over and over. Tried it with 2 different wireless signals.
What could be the problem? Probably not hardware since it was a strong signal with no password or special protection (it had the unlocked icon) and the Wii made the successful test already.
Any help?

Am I the only person getting a twitchy cursor at the system/channels menu area. It's still usable, and if I move closer to the tv the isses almost goes away, but it's just irritating. All my settings are doubled checked and played around with to no effect. The strange this is: I don't have this problems with any of the games. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, I didn't have this problem before I managed to update my wii with the latest firmware. I had a silky smooth cursor at almost any distance. Anyone have any thoughts?

#2 - try flicking the nunchuck down towards the ground. I was trying to thrust it forward and it wasn't working for me either but then I flicked it down (like reloading in red steel) and it works everytime.
For everyone about the slot illumnation... it only lights up when you're putting in a disk, recieve an update from WiiConnect24, or get messages from other users. If it's not on, go into Wii settings... make sure WiiConnect24 is on, and then change the options for slot illumination.

I actually support hundreds of Wireless routers, so I understand all of the WEP and channel 6 jargan. The Wii isn't the only Wi-Fi product that has trouble with this stuff so it isn't something to get terribly excited about. I highly recommend against using channel 6 ever! That is the default channel that routers ship with, and other Wireless routers in your area conflict with yours when they are on the same channel. Even if it's only one other wireless router. As for the WEP, I have trouble with that with laptops and even PCs using WEP encryption. Sometimes it just takes a little screwing around with the settings, and even disabling WEP and reconfiguring your wireless profile on the laptop or PC to get it working again. Wireless routers all have trouble too, D-Link in particular will stop sending wireless broadcasts when your power flickers sometimes. I just wanted to share all of that with you guys, and wish you luck with your brand new Wii!!!

An update on my 220602 situation: it turned out to be, as far as I can tell, primarily a ports issue. Basically, I had to manually configure the Wii with a static IP address, and then add it to my machine's DMZ. That solved my issues with getting past the Wii Shop EULA.
I have to admit, it's a little disappointing, because even though I was able to figure it out through a few visits to the Nintendo forums and a bit of trial-and-error, this definitely isn't a layman's fix. Hopefully Nintendo will come up with a better solution.

I've been having a problem with the Wii randomly losing its connection to my Wiimotes... I was playing Sonic last night with no problems, I get up and put in Excite Truck and all the LEDs on both Wiimotes were off. Any button press or attempt to sync (from wii or mote alike) resulted in all 4 LEDs blinking, searching, and then turning off again. The only thing that has worked so far is to unplug the Wii and when it comes back up, it works fine... for a while.

Here's my very real Wii disaster story:
Set everything up, turn on the Wii, get the screen that says "Press A to Continue" so I press A on the remote and .... nothing. Notice all 4 lights on the remote are blinking which means it's not synced. "No problem, just re-sync it". I try to re-sync but no dice. After a half-hour of frustration I figure the remote must be faulty so I bust out the second remote I bought and try to sync that. Nothing. Tried unplugging the Wii, removing and reinserting batteries, hitting the sync buttons in various combinations but the remotes just laugh at me as they flash their 4 lights.
Basically, my Wii refuses to sync with any remote and is therefore unusable (before someone mentions the sensor bar as the culprit: the bar isn't needed to detect button presses). Nintendo is going send me a new Wii, but the week wait (holiday weekend delay) will not be very pleasant as I was planning on some heavy Zelda action over Thanksgiving.
Between this and all the other problems I'm reading about, I'm very disappointed in Nintendo.

I have a major problem. My Wii will turn on (the light will be green on the power button), but the screen will remain black. I tried every troubleshooting suggestion that Nintendo threw at me on their website, and still I cannot get the game to work. Sometimes, however, it does actually turn on, but then if it does, the console doesn't recognize the controller, or the controller will stop working after a while (or a screen will freeze). That's only rare though, as my Wii only turns on successfully 1% of the time. It worked fine the first day of launch and a bit the day after, but then everything just went downhill.
Any advice please?

As soon as I try to play the game the wii remote will not respond to any movement at all. For example, when playing the wii sports boxing the left hand(nunchuck) punches fine. When trying to punch with my right(wii remote), the hand is raised above the mii's head and will not move. Some one please help!

Next day, system froze after ten minutes with Sports. All power was lost. Removed wall plug as suggested, and system

I THINK I HAVE ONE TO TOP IT ALL!!!
I got my wii, came home and set it up in my living room. pressed the A button to go to the language select screen and that was fine. once i got to that screen i couldn't do anything, there was no cursor on the screen for me to move to select anything... i have a new one being shipped to me but last night i finaly took my broken wii upstairs to my room to give it a second try and it was the same thing... so i flung the wiimote around to see what would happen and i saw something flicker. i then slowly moved the wiimote in all dirrections to find that it works, just not the way it's supposed to... for some reason it will only work at about a 145 degree angle and aimed up to the left of the sensor bar. i tried moving the sensor bar so that the tv would be the central spot so i could play... then i noticed that it was the lamp near me... for some reason if the lamp next to me isn't on, i have no signle, it's one of those lamps that have 5 different shades at the top all on twisty arms and it's made of metal. so i can play my wii only if that's on and i'm using it as a sensor bar and not the actual sensor bar... anyone have a clue what's going on? i don't!! please... let me know if you can think of anything because i have a feeling that my new wii isn't going to fix this problem... i think that Nintendo didn't test their product very well before launch.

A few times when I have done a reconnect before playing anything and then it reloads the home menu NEITHER remote works?!?!?
I also have seen a problem where I go to the home menu, select the same disc I was just playing and it says something like "Disk Read Error". Anyone else with this one??
