Reader DoctaBu is fed up with the limitations of cords in what should be a wireless age, and he's taken matters into his own hands with this homemade improvement on the tied-down Wii sensor bar. He has no illusions about form over function for this project, either, because it's all about getting the job done. "Yes, it's ugly. Yes, it's ghetto. But, it is a wireless, battery-powered Wii Sensor Bar. And it works." Preach it, brother. He even made a video of the process for the curious, which we've included after the jump.
We expect that by next week, someone will have springboarded off this idea and we'll be bringing you the Porsche edition of wireless sensor bars, complete with shimmering white finish, Jacuzzi and half-naked girls. Go to, DIYers!
[Thanks, DoctaBu!]

If all the sensor bar chord does is power the LEDs, then why can't someone make a mod that simply replaces the power supply?

fudge yah!! I heard about this yesterday...and am gearing up to make my own. The one up at the top is so ugly, but functional. The real sensor bar has more ir leds though, which may help in making it better (or not). Also, as a comment above, someone should just attach a battery pack to the existing sensor bar. I can't wait to see the crazy DIY creations. Good Luck

So the cable that is connected to the Wii merely powers the sensor bar, rather than transfering data.
That makes a lot of sense actually, explaining how sunlight or halogen lighting could create interference.

I am planning to hook up a computer to the new HDTV I bought on Black Friday. The only issue would be the mouse since using one on a couch is a pain. Being able to point on the TV with the Wiimote would be very nice.
Since it has been shown that Bluetooth receivers pick up the little device, we are getting closer to that possibility. The wireless sensor bar means that we don't have to worry about having the Wii on. Now all we need are instructions on how to pair the Wiimote w/ a computer and drivers to get them communicating w/ each other. I propose a contest!

Sounds crazy but I read that you can use 2 candles as a sensor bar. Something to do with IR radiation. Havn't tried it myself but this could come in handy...it's another wireless solution
