In an attempt to aid you in

Wii console
MSRP: $249.99 US
This might prove difficult, for obvious reasons, but before anyone can get into gaming with the Wii, they'll need a Wii. Already included with a copy of Wii Sports, they'll be able to get acquainted with the control scheme and have fun right out of the box.
Once you get them the Wii, these games might help lead them down the path toward an excellent gaming future:

Excite Truck
MSRP: $49.99
With an easy control scheme, demanding the player only turn the Wiimote right or left to steer and hit a button for gas and another for the brake, it's a fast-paced driving game that almost anyone can derive some pleasure from. Past knowledge of Excite Bike games is not needed.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
MSRP: $49.99 US
Featuring a wide variety of different minigames, Banana Blitz is chock full of different experiences that the new gamer is sure to find delight in. Not only that, but it is a great multiplayer game, outside of the included copy of Wii Sports, therefore opening up the new gamer to a different aspect of gaming.
So there you have it, part 1 of our continuing series. Make sure you stop by next week for part 2!
[Update: Whoops, huge slip on our part. We apologize for making such a bone-headed error and have removed the Mario section.]

I hope some poor sap doesn't go out and buy Mario Bros. after seeing this, thinking it's Super Mario Bros.

Even clicking on the above image of SMB on the VC directs my browser to the regular ol' Mario Bros. page on Nintendo's site.

Hinkle, c'mon man! That was a bad slip with Mario Bros. I wouldn't burn five bucks on the original Mario Bros, but plan to do so when Super Mario Bros hits. :D

Even the PICTURE links to Mario Bros. This is pretty third-rate work for this normally-reliable site.

Note on #6 - this should have been #1 or #2 but for this swell approve-by-email system, which appears to be lagging greatly today. Don't mean to repeat everyone else.
Any clue if/when SMB will be coming out (in NA)?

In response to your answer. 1st off I do believe Twilight Princess should be on that list since it is the best game I ever played. I really enjoy ExciteTruck and am one that loves it rather than hates it. The Super Mario Bros. thing was a slip and not a big deal. Get it when it is on VC. I don't have SMBB yet but from what I hear its a great game to get used to the system. I can't wait for Pokemon Battle Revolution which should be one of the best games on the system.

... i have no idea what you guys are talking about. but the nes game was called "super mario brothers". and i'm very certain that nintendo arn't offering the 1983 title "Mario brothers" on VC.
just the vc page says Mario Brothers.. so it's actually a stuffup on nintendo's end.
so for all you poor poor nunjobs out there.
VC Mario Bro's = 1986 Super Mario Bro's for the nes

I'm sorry virohex, but it is YOU who is the "nunjob"
Both games were released for the NES:
Mario Bros.:

SUPER Mario Bros.:
http://nindb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/nes/sm.shtml
...but the only one released for the Wii's Virtual Console so far is the ORIGINAL Mario Bros.
That is all.

Yeah, you could buy them Excite Truck, SMB Banana Blitz and Mario Bros Arcade, or you could save yourself $105 and buy them easily the best title on the system so far, Twilight Princess. The game isn't that out of reach for new players, and Excite Truck is just downright terrible. SMB is the epitome of a hardcore game, repetitve challenging tasks that some people will never complete due to limited skill.

@ virohex,
"...MB was actually released for the nes AFTER SMB...."
Ummm... ok, but what does that have to do with anything?
Super Mario Bros. still isn't on the VC, while Mario Bros. is -- that's just a fact. Let's accept it for now, hope it changes for the better in the near future, and move on.

Beyond flaming the author of this article I say good job with it, minus the SMB slip. I think that ExciteTruck would be a great first game. My wife loves it and she is NOT a console gamer. Hats button mashing and analoge sticks. But she just IMed me and said she just unlocked all the trucks, and I am stuck at work. BAH.

Firstly, not everyone wants to play a long and involved game(ie. Zelda). To imply that Zelda is the best game for EVERYONE is just plain stupid... It's a great game if you're by yourself and you've got a lot of time to kill... But for me(and a lot of other people) we mostly play games socially and in short bursts.
Seconldy, Excite Truck is an awesome game. I read the so-so reviews of it, so I wasn't sure whether to pick it up... But now that I've been playing it for a few days, I've found that it's really a ton of fun. Sure, there isn't much depth to it, but I love playing it. To say it's terrible is just downright wrong.
