Now that many of us have had the time to get friendly with our Wiis and maybe toss a Wiimote around here or there, let's take a moment to celebrate the little things the small details. In the frenzy of anticipating and buying and box-opening, sometimes we lose track of the details, the really fabulous things about a new console that begin to shine after a few days of serious gameplay. Fanboys that we are, we like to pull those details into the spotlight and coo over them whilst giving our European friends an idea of what's in store for them. Thus, after the jump we've listed a few of the little things that warm our fanboy hearts -- and we wanna hear what you love most about the Wii as well.
Of course, not everything is always perfect ... so we might have a few little beefs as well ....
Alisha
Love it: It's the tiniest thing, but I adore being able to eject a disc without turning the console on. Sometimes you're in a hurry and you have to return a rental or something you've borrowed from a friend and you hit eject, but with most systems, then you have to go in and turn the whole thing off. Not so with the Wii! Sometimes I just pop discs out for the hell of it, because I can. And also, forget all the worries that the Wii will have you flailing about, exhausted and drained, all the time. Sure, you can jump up and down if you want, and some games cry for it. But if you're not in the mood, the Wiimote and nunchuk setup is the lazy gamer's dream. I can sprawl completely across the sofa, right hand pointed at the screen, left hand lazily pushing the nunchuk down by my knee or whatever, and it's great. It's fabulous. No more clutching the controller and trying to find a comfortable spot. I may never move again. I'm actually there right now, playing Twilight Princess, and blogging using only the power of my mind.
Hate it: The cord between the nunchuk and Wiimote is just a leeeetle bit too short. When we were first flailing about in Red Steel multiplayer (which has become a big favorite), I just knew I was about to rip that cord right in half. Two more inches would have been perfect, I think. Also, sometimes the Wii just doesn't register your movement. I don't know if it's a failing with me (and my motion wasn't clear) or with the system, but there have been times in Wii Sports tennis (latest addiction) when I have quite firmly swung and my little Mii just stands there, racket in hand, as I yowl in frustration. There's nothing more anger-making than missing a shot when you didn't really miss a shot, amirite?
Jason
Love it: I'm a huge fan of the built-right-in instruction manuals in Virtual Console games. In fact, I'm such a fan that I'm not sure why this approach isn't used in modern games. Why not include the manuals right in a menu screen, for in-game browsing? Those archaic little books in our DVD cases are hardly looked at anymore. I also really enjoy that the flaps on the front and top of the Wii can be removed, improving the aesthetic quality of the console for those of us who enjoy having Gamecube equipment in for easy access.
Hate it: There's nothing on this planet more beautiful than that blue disc slot glow, and the only way to truly appreciate it is to send a message or E-mail to the Wii console externally, and then never turn it on. Even if you don't check the message, the glow is erased. Boo! I also don't like that there's no easy way to remove power to a secondary controller without either waiting for several minutes or having to disconnect all controllers at once. The whole synching process is a bit iffy, I think.

Jason: Isn't there an option in the preferences to change when the blue light is on? I though I saw something like that.
It's great how Nintendo can pull of a console launch where the complaints are so minor, unlike that other console maker, uhhhh… you know, it kinda goes like… ah, I forgot.

Love It: I love being able to lay on the couch with one arm dangling out in the air playing a game while the other holds the nunchuck across my mid section. Its so sweet. I used to have a "gaming chair" that would allow me to be in a fairly comfortable position and still able to reach all the triggers properly, but now I just lounge on my sofa and its great.
Hate It: I play in a nearly dark room when I play a more serious shooter so I can see all the detail more clearly (CoD3) and I have to say that little blue light on the remote that shows which controller you have is WAY too bright. Its so fugging bright it actually distracts my vision. Anyone know of a way to turn the brightness down on that bad boy?

What many people need to realize, is that by being a bleeding-edge-early-adopter you are going to make certain sacrafices. It was a few months before I could neatly play windows movie files on my macbook pro (i was the 5th in my city to have one) and I'm still waiting on universal binaries for some of my favorite apps.
Sure, it would be nice to have more VC games or a proper browser to show off to your friends, but when it comes down to it the Wii is there to play Wii games. As we can see from the work going into getting Goldeneye on the VC, that there is much more to getting a game on the VC than simply posting the ROM in the store.
What we can do is hope that Nintendo is listening to the consumer and will react with some nice changes (like the arcane friends system) in the near future.

I hate everything about the online setup. I hate having to exchange friend codes. I hate having to manually type in my friends code and type in their nickname, and they have to type mine before we can even message each other (with no confirmation either way mind you!). I hate how you can't see when your friends are online. Why can't Nintendo just come up with a decent gamertag system already?

I played Zelda for about four to six hours straight yesterday.
My hands weren't numb, my fingers not in a claw formation, and my back didn't hurt. It was the most comfortable half a day long gaming session I've had.
The Wiimote to Nunchuck cord hasn't been a hindrance to me, but I have not gotten Red Steel yet.
Gripes:
Friend codes. I hate them, and the 100 limit means I can't meet someone new and random like I can in an MMORPG. I'd like to be able to say 'I'm an adult, let me do what I want and go out and get everyone else who thinks like this' type of thing. instead you have to find someone you don't know, get them to give you your code and you yours, etc. It's a PITA.

A piece of tape?
I would also like some more length on the nunchuck. It actually would have been nice to have one of those roll-up cords that can roll up into the nunchuck like a tape measure. But give us a lot of cord so people can pick a short or long length and lock it at that position. Then when you're done, just suck the whole cord right inside the nunchuck for storage!

I agree with Alisha-- two inches would have made a big difference on the Nunchuk cord length for me. And without broadband, the only time I ever get to see the slot light is a quick flash when the Wii first powers on.
And I also wish there were a way to disconnect/turn off remotes while in-game (maybe a firmware update could fix it? Just hit Home to bring up the controller menu, and be able to click on where it shows battery life to disconnect remotes? Also, when I've been connected as P1 but my wife wants to continue playing solo, she's got to go in and change Miis, after we switch remotes, since mine was tied to P1.

Turning the power on with the Wiimote. The mote lives on my coffee table next to my TV remote! For quick game action just turn it on!
The Size, fits in a small spot next to DVD player and the surround sound head unit.
Most comfortable control setup. I can play Zelda for hours and be comfy cozy.
Hate It:
Wii online services, or lack there of. I would really expect a "XBox Live" kinda service so you can see what your friends are playing.
Slow response of the Shopping Channel.
Can't have the Blue Glow on all the time. It is soo sexy. Only time i see it is when i turn the console on and that is just for a second.

I love, love, love the SIZE of the Wii! I have a Westinghouse 32" LCD HDTV that's on a stand in a really weird spot near my bed, and the Wii juuuuust perfectly fits under one side of the screen with absolutely no wiggle room.
And what about the SOUND? The Wii is so whisper quiet that it's almost not there, and the speaker in the Wiimote is one of the most incredible tools for game imersion I've ever played with. I didn't think it'd do much, but being able to hear the tennis ball thwack against the racket in Wii Sports really drags you into the game!

Im so glad I got the chance to get one of these early on. All of your online woes will be adressed and Im excited to watch this thing evolve.
Love It: The Wiimote - Fantastic. So simple and intuitive. It is extremely accurate and mine never freaks out on me. I have the ideal lighting for it though. I cant wait for them to start coming out with different colors for them. I love the way the console looks, love the blue light (dont care if I only see it every once in awhile). The speaker on the remote is awesome, of course the quality isnt going to be like B&W, its a tiny speaker thats driven by battery power. People that bitch about this are just trying to find stuff to bitch about.
Hate It: Hmmm...very hard to think of anything. I hate that we dont have the same VC games as Japan, but that should change soon. Id really like to get Street Fighter II going. I also wish that I could find some of the accessories that everyone seems to be sold out of. Multiplayer gaming on the wii (especially wii sports) is better than anything that I have ever played, so I want more Wiimotes and Nunchuks! I do agree that the friend system is a little screwy, but I am sure that this will be fixed before online play hits in mid to late 07.

For those with remote disconnect issues, such as TVGenius
"And I also wish there were a way to disconnect/turn off remotes while in-game (maybe a firmware update could fix it? Just hit Home to bring up the controller menu, and be able to click on where it shows battery life to disconnect remotes?"
That's actually exactly how it works. When in-game, press the Home button. At the bottom, go to the remote settings. Click Disconnect. Now press 1+2 only on the remote(s) you want on. A little cumbersome, but much less so than if you had to individually connect all the remote(s) you wanted to use everytime you turned the Wii on. Example - you are playing Wii Sports tennis with four people. You go to the Wii Menu and pop in Super Monkey Ball. Everyone decides to take a little break, so you power down the console. You come back in fifteen minutes, power up the console, and press Start on Monkey Ball. As it is now, all four controllers will connect. It would be a pain to have to reconnect them all over again.
The complaint about the Christmas tree really is a complaint about all Infrared light (incadescent Christmas bulbs give off an IR spectrum, too). Because the sensor bar only uses a few IR points, any IR in the way is going to mess up pointing. It's a shame to have to worry about IR interference, but I think it's a small price to pay for the relative-aiming we get, rather than having to hold the remote out like a light-gun - and take the pain that comes with it.

Love it:
- Playing a game with my hands 2 or more feet apart instead of the 6" they've been apart for the past 20 years.
- Using the wiimote as a target for projectile weapons is so nice. Compare the difficulty in using Zelda:OoT's bow&arrow to Zelda:TP.
- Finally seeing widescreen games on a Nintendo platform
- Virtual console and GCN compatibility is so freaking sweet. I can remove so much clutter and relive my youth.
- Lots and lots of other things: built in WiFi, the surprisingly fun Mii channel, picture channel, motion sensor driving, etc etc etc
(Now the fun stuff)
Hate it:
- No laser pointer accuracy with the remote even though it's perfectly capable of doing so. Comeon Nintendo, update the firmware to allow more advanced pointer settings.
- Sit more than 8' away from the sensor bar and things go wacky. Couldn't this be fixed with more powerful infrared emitters or increasing the distance between the two lights?
- Inability to customize the digital buttons on virtual console games. What a trivial feature that would be to implement and it would allow the user to fix some mistakes the developer made when designing the game!
- Cannot use the left analog stick as a D-Pad on Genesis games. Fix this soon Nintendo! (Fortunately it works fine for NES, SNES, and TGX games)
- Cannot return to the Wii main menu when playing a Gamecube game.
- No more rumble on N64 games. Why? Why?
- A second SD card slot would be nice, or just the ability to support another with a USB adapter. The photochannel is surprisingly fun, but requires ejecting the existing SD card to use it. They are so tiny I don't like letting them sit around outside of a device.

A 2-hour-ish long update is ridiculous. I hope that WiiConnect24 gets set up to download the update and then the Wii should just ask you to install the next time you turn it on.

LOVE:
- The console's size. It's not a behemoth like the 360 and PS3.
- The control schema. It's old technology with a new face that works as smooth as silk.
- VCE. Thank you Nintendo for allowing me the opportunity to get rid of my NES, SNES, N64, and GC.
- Access to 1st party Nintendo games.
- Zelda on launch day.
- Wii Sports included with the system instead of having to pay for it like Japan did.
- A good amount of systems available on launch day which didn't cause anyone to loose their life.
HATE:
- 16x9 and progressive scan are not a standard in each game. There is no reason why all games shouldn't have this.
- Last generation technology. I'm an old school gamer and I love gameplay more than graphics, but I'm also a geek and a technologist. I love seeing the enveloped pushed when it comes to technology. I'm pretty sure Nintendo could have redesign the hardware to incorporate an additional CPU and GPU for extra processing power, or even a micro-HD instead of and SD slot.
- Not caring about the gaming communities opinions. Nintendo needs to create a module that will allow creative submission to be sent to their R&D department. They can't always think they know what's best for gamers because "they" said so.

Love:
Playability! Everyone can play (some) games. Before the Wii came out, me and my 60 yr old dad went to the game crazy to try it out. They only had excite truck, and my dad was--very surprisingly--good! I also have a friend that is not very good at games and tends to lean over into other people when trying to turn. Now we cant get mad at him, and he wont suck!
Plain fun games, regardless of controller. I had 2 friends over yesterday and we played excite truck the whole time and we had a blast! More laughing than playing BS(card game)!!! Zelda is great too.
built in Wi-Fi is nice, because i only have one ethernet cable up to the room its in. If online was worth it...
Gripes:
For some reason, i fear i am getting carpal tunnel or something from zelda. I dont know if im doing something wrong, but it sucks because its a really addicting game! Some advice on how to hold it comfortably would be great!
The shop channel slowness! WTF? Comepare it to Marketplace, And it gets blown to pieces! I reeeeeealy, reeeeeely hope that the browser is waaaaay faster than that.
Controller connectivity. The ring of light on the 360 makes it waaaay easier to manage controllers. Its so annoying to turn controlles off, then lay them down on the
table to have the trigger pressed and the controller turned on. Again, the 360 has lots of nice features that have to do with controllers.
Yeah, the slot not lighting up is annoying. it looked so cool in pictures!
Not having some games to start with on VC. Why dont they have super mario brothers? its in japan! why not here?
Basically, i hope nintendo fixes things with software updates in the future, and vc games on disc.
I hope everyone who doesnt have one that should will get one, and i cant wait for the holidays.

Why doe 90% of their games have to include one of if not all of the "Mario" characters?
Why must almost all of those games look "inflatable"?
Why does red steel have to look slow and tedious?
why does call of duty 3 look like more trouble than its worth?
Why does nintendo believe we want a controller that looks more like the remote to a DVD player?
From hearing first hand reports and reading yours the controller is far more trouble than it's worth, and this system while it doesn't have the bugs the Sony does, it doesn't deliver in ANYTHING else.
This is a game cube in a new shiny package with an under engineered controller..
If you gave me a Wii, I wouldn't even cut the tape on the box.
