While many of us were disappointed upon learning the disc slot lights would not act as we had hoped, some were so much so that they went ahead and modded the light to work all the time. With several different settings, some just pulsating slowly, others reacting to sound, these folk have managed to make the Wii more visually appealing than it already is. A feat so big, we have no idea how big a shoe it would have to wear (ynuck ynuck).
One thing worries us, however: does this mod cut down the lifespan of the console's disc slot light?

Why? If you have the Wii in the same room as your dvd player, that pulsing bright ass blue light is the most annoying thing in the world when watching movies. Or playing video games for that matter. LESS FREAKING LIGHTS NOT MORE

LEDs can last over a decade even if they're on all the time. They lose brightness slowly over that time though.

It does blink on and off when you get a wii-mail message from someone. It caught me offguard the first time because the power was off, but it was blinking at me... took me a bit to realize why.

I don't really care if the light is on all the time, but i'm really hoping Nintendo releases a firmware update to at least allow it to be on while you're playing a game.

Yeah i'm with you on that one Loban. I don't really want the blue light on when the Wii is turned off but, having it on dureing game play would be nice.

thats not a mod, that happenmed to me when I ejected a gamecube disc while the console was running. It's just a glitch of some sort, not a mod.

If you want the light to always be on just send yourself a message and never check it.

About LED's "almost never burning out" and lasting over a decade.... They CAN... it doesn't mean they will. LED's do burn out quite often, look at any truck on the road nowadays (big trucks), all led lighting and most of them have burnt out lights. Blinking and flashing increases it chances of burning out.
Not saying they will though. But it can happen.

If it burns out, there's no reason why you couldn't just crack it back open and swap in a new LED. That's probably easier than the hack in the first place!

Yes it is aa mod. sickmods.com seels a chip you put in your Wii for $20. I think it's awesome, since I believe you can change the LED color with replacment bulbs. I'm thinking about doing this to my Wii, when I get the $$$$$. For $20 I'll be the envy of my Wii friends. Live hard, Play harder. Zelder_Man!!!!!
