According to a scan of The Retail Insider (we assume it's an in-company newsletter, we never worked for Best Buy) available over at Go Nintendo, all the Best Buys are going to be holding all of their available Wii units to sell on the weekend of December 17th. You can read the reasons why above, however we're still chalking this up to be a rumor at this point due to the typo in the last bullet point.
What do you guys think?

i work in a retail business and we have to do the same thing, just to get everyone all hyped up about, "Oh my gosh they have them in stock lets go there and get one and buy a tv while we are at it." is what best buy thinks everyone is going to do, which might be true, best buy can get people in there store pretty easily these days.

This seems entirely possible, minimum 40 per store would put up there with launch date, I have also over heard an target Employee say the will be getting one last big shipment before Christmas. So maybe Nintendo is going to flood the market again just before Christmas in hopes that all the good little boys and girls will be waking up to a Wii under their tree. (hehe kind of rhymes).

I had an associate at Target tell me they were holding back an entire shipment of Wii's for their ad post-Black Friday. So it wouldn't surprise me either. Plus Best Buy is infamous for their ads and enticing customers in with great deals or in-stock items only to seemingly pull them from the shelves late in the week to have stock on hand for the following week (don't know if that's true, but it sure seems that way).

I worked for the Blue monster up until the end of October and I can tell ya whatever is in the Retail Insider is law at Best Buy (Unless of course a GM decides otherwise). And Best Buy is known to do this and if you'll actually ask some of the "kids" in the Media section they'll be honest and tell ya that they've got to hold them. Now even tho I no longer work there I knew about this last shipment for a while although it was only expected to be around 20 units.
And the same goes for the PS3(I hate it but yeah), they are still getting more consoles in of that garbage too on a regular basis and if you wanna know about shipments just get buddy-buddy with one of the part-timers there, they are more than willing to piss off upper management by letting people know whats comming.

If the question is whether this is possible, of course it is. Walmart just did the same thing on the 6th. They held back stocks for weeks to "re-launch" on the 6th. I would know, I got one after waiting 2 hours outside in the cold at Walmart.
But if the question is whether or not this report is true, who knows, guess we'll find out.

It's not necessarily a typo, but a grammatical error. Then should be than.

This is probably fact, as I work at Target and can tell you that we are holding 2 shipments for the 17th. It's all because we are putting the Wii in our ads this week, so we are making sure that we have it in stock, for however short of a timespan it lasts.

Does this mean that when the doors open at Best Buy and Target on Sunday the 17th, there are going to be 40 systems available? Hmm, I might have to try and snag one.

GameStop Corporate is telling all stores to hold their Wii shipments until Sunday, December 17th as well. I know because I work at a GameStop and got the memo.

I can add another confirmation of Target's having a big Wii push this Sunday. My friend works in our security department, and she gets told about all that stuff. We're camping out the night before, since we missed out on the launch. Lucky me, my birthday is Friday.

My question is, when are any of these stores actually going to stock effing Wii component cables? Since launch day, I've been stuck manually changing the aspect ratio of my HDTV every time I want to fire up my Wii, since it doesn't remember that on a per-input basis for some reason. I already beat Zelda entirely in 480i, but I still want to see how it looks in progressive...

I wouldn't think the typo thing would flag this as a rumor. As shown by comment #6, it's one of the most common typos/grammatical errors out there.

I always thought the weekend right before Christmas (this year it's Christmas Eve, so that's even worse) was the most competitive shopping weekend. Seeing that all those last minute shoppers rush out to get their stuff.

I work for best buy, and this is our "Retail Insider". And yes it's true, we're getting Wii's in on Dec. 17th. We'll have them a few days beforehand, but on the 17th we're "allowed" to sell them.

This is all off-the-record, as I'm assuming posting like this is akin to "talking to press", which we're supposed to reserve for specific people. Anyway...
I also work at Best Buy (in Media). My best guess as to the reason that the holds are done is because Best Buy would like to include the Wii in their Sunday ad - and if we sell everything "upon receipt" as the week goes on, everyone would be pissed on Sunday when they come in and there's no Wii. As it is, we get enough people that are pissed that we have a video display of the Wii (non-interactive demo) and no consoles in stock. So...if it's in the ad, then we've got to have a minimum on-hand for the ad.
The drawback is that everyone's got to compete to get the system on that Sunday. But from an advertising standpoint, it'd be pretty unacceptable to go through this holiday season without having the Wii in the ad, and the only way to coordinate that is to hold them for a Sunday.
From us, the employee, we apologize. We hate holding things - and would love to sell stuff the minute it comes in. Especially in Media - we're all gamers too. But our rules are for the customer - employees aren't allowed to buy the Wii or PS3 from Best Buy until further notice to allow for more systems to get into customers' hands. So...while some things like the holds don't immediately seem to be in favor of the customer, they are - because if we were to sell them once they got in, they'd never see the sales floor - employees would just call their friends to come and snipe them out of the store before anyone knew.
That's my two cents on it...for what it's worth! Rock on, joystiqers & Wii-fanboys!

I can confirm this is a fact.
I work for Best Buy and this is indeed the plan.
We've even been given the ok to tell customers that we will have "minimal units available on a first come, first serve basis on December 17th"
To my knowledge, my store will have 42 systems (based on two separate shipments of 21 systems) and we will also have 35 or so controllers and nunchucks. I believe it was 18 classic controllers as well.
If you want to score ANY of this stuff, be prepared to get to your local Best Buy EARLY and DRESS WARM (it's December, after all). Don't expect to wander in at 11 and get ANYTHING. Be it a console or even the controllers. I'm sure the first so many people in line are gonna gobble those extra controllers up crazy fast.
Good luck to those about to venture out. If you're in the NorthEast PA region, maybe you'll see me. :D
Still not sure if I work on Sunday yet, though. I hope I'm off. I hate opening on Sundays.

Can anyone tell me the protocol? I bought my boyfriend the wii for christmas and wanted to add a controller and nunchuck to the gift. Do I have to wait on a line if that's all I want? Can I get into the store when it opens and go directly to the accessories?

God, I feel so privileged. I've comfortably had the Wii since the end of November, have an extra remote AND nunchuck, the component cables, and multiple memories of priceless moments playing Wii Sports and Rayman with a beau (sometimes nude). And I could have easily gotten four remotes and nunchucks - I'm just holding out for the colors next year.

Does any of the employees that work for Best Buy, Game stop or target (anywhere that carries the Wii) know if they will have any available after the Dec 17 sale? If so do you have a day they might be in the store. I would really love to get my four kids one for Christmas and it is driving me crazy that I can not get one! It also makes me so mad to see them on Ebay and Amazon going for 800.00 dollars when you can get the same one for only $249.00.
I would really apprciate any information you all may have.
Thanks so much!
