So, we already heard that Best Buy may be holding their in-stock Wiis until Sunday ... and a number of sources are reporting that GameStop is doing the same. What's more? All of our sneaky anonymous sources within the two retail giants are saying that the hold is absolutely true. December 17 is the new Wii day. Expect a holiday frenzy if you're out shopping this weekend, and if you want to snag a Wii, get there early and cross your fingers. Anyone up for camping?

I'd suggest camping out at a Target instead.
About 2 weeks ago I decided to camp out at a Target on a tip, got there at 6:15am and there was already a line of 50 people. It swelled to about 150 by the time the store opened, and luckily there were at least 90 Wiis so I got to take one home.
No extra remotes or copies of Z:TP though, so I had to go to a different Target to pick up Z:TP, and I haven't seen remotes or 'chucks anywhere in my area.

Is there any one else that's just slightly annoyed by these holding dates? It sucks when Gamestop encourages you to call every morning to see when they've got a shipment in, only to find out that they're playing coy and saving them up for the busiest shopping day anyway.
I understand it from a retailer's perspective, but as a consumer, it makes me seriously unhappy with them.. I've given up on buying a Wii until after Christmas, and even then, I'll avoid Gamestop.

When I was at Gamestop yesterday, looking for Metal Slug Anthology, (the asshat there claimed it was delayed, a stop at Walmart afterwards proved him full of it) the person in front of me was asking about Wiis and the GS-Idiot said they wouldn't get any more until after Christmas. I very much doubt Nintendo wouldn't be shipping ANY consoles between now and the 25th. The first thing I thought of was the Best Buy story, turns out my guess was right.

My local Best Buy confirmed the hold, they claimed the weren't getting anymore until sunday. If Game Stop is doing the same all the better because they are in the same shopping mall. I don't like that they are doing it this way but hey at least it is a solid date to go by, every other store gives me the I don't know crap.

Forget brick-and-mortar, y'all! Amazon also has a ton of systems for sale this week, but they're doing it lottery-style. You sign up, come back Tuesday, and see if you were selected to purchase a 20/60 GB PS3 or Wii, whichever you chose. Since line-waiting is a fruitless endeavor most of the time anyhow, why not do it in your PJ's with just a click? My $0.02 anyhow...
Details and Amazon.com signup link here!

I have learned my lesson. I actually have a life. I will wait until I can just walk into the store and buy one instead of dealing with the writhing masses of unwashed humanity in the pre-Christmas rush to grab the coolest toys. I will probably have to wait until March before I can do that, but I am sick of this whole process. Today will be a suicidal day to try to go shopping, so I will stay away. What this mass consumerism has to do with the holiday it purports to support is beyond me. Instead of symbolizing the gifts (just go give your loved ones some myrrh, for crying out loud), maybe more effort should be put into symbolizing the peace, love and tolerance preached by the man whose birth is purportedly celebrated by this holiday. I'm not even a religious person and I can see that. Then again, there is no profit in peace, love and tolerance, and the corporations know that. So instead we buy, buy, buy. Peace love and tolerance? Getting a video game for Christmas might be tantamount to heresy! Celebrate the birth of a religion's savior by shooting, killing and maiming virtual people. Yay!
Putting the soapbox away now. I hope you all survive your efforts to buy into the consumerist fever that grips our nation like some horrifying virus around this time of the year and actually get to enjoy a little peace, love and tolerance...away from other people. :)

I went to Target this morning as soon as I could (I was working the overnight shift and got off at 5:30am). Already at least 50 people in line. The store had said they'd have 60 units, but only had 18(!). So I went to two gamestops (both had 6 units, and more than 6 people in line) then to another target. The store manager there had told people they had 50 units the day before, but once again they only had 18.
So here I am Wii-less. Stupid work/not enough units/managers lying about number of units.

Made the trip around to Best Buy, Circuit CIty, ToysRUs and Target. There were at least 30 people at all locations by 6:00 am except Target. So I stopped there. I was number 7 in line. Two guys showed up from Circuit City line about 7:00 and said Circuit City only got 4 Wiis. At 7:30, a manager from Target came out and said they got 0.
Thanks to all the ebay scourge, I don't get to play a Wii until sometime after Christmas.
Oh well...

I wish I could get out there and get one on Sunday, but I'm just gonna wait until January to get one because I'm sick of it being such a hassle. Plus, I'm stuck at home with pneumonia and my parents are too busy to go to Best Buy this weekend. Sigh...

Stopped playing Gears of War at 1a.m. on Sunday morning and got in line at target - we had called and the electronics manager said they had 15 units for Sunday. We stood in line at #11 and #12 while people began showing up. #15 was in line at 1:45. We told people that we were told there were only 15, some insisted that this person said that someone at target has said there were 40, so they stayed. When the number of people got close to 40 in line another group said they heard 100, I kept telling people we were pretty sure about the number being 15 (had confirmation from multiple sources, hence why we were there at 1am.) We called the target after hours and were repeatedly told that they know we are standing our front, but that they did not know how many they had, finally I called at 6:00 and said "We have more than 70 people waiting for a WII (we started a list at 2:00) and if they do not have enough, please come out and let us all know before people riot.
At 6:30 an employee came out and explained that there were only 15 WII units, and about 12 PS3 units. The first 15 people in line would get a ticket for the WII, and the first 12 people that wanted a PS3 would get a ticket for those as well, but the only way the people later in line would be offered is if one of the first 15 could not pay. People were pissed, but many of them left. Many bitched, several asked the employee to check again, they were sure that there were more (I think they believed that he was guessing, he works at target, therefore he is too lazy or stupid to be able to count the units, even though he said 15 they were sure he meant 100.) He returned with security a few minutes later and said - "I counted again and there are only 15, the first 15 people in line will get a ticket, but there are no more. You may have time to get in line at another store. Any questions?"
More people left. Greatest thing is - more people started to show up. All 15 consoles were gone at 1:45, people were still expecting to get a unit by showing up after 6:00am, as if they had not been watching the news, junior absolutely HAD to have one for christmas, they were on a mission, but they would be damned if they would find out HOW to get one, but on black friday they were happily camping for that $3.95 toaster or $40 vacuum at WalMart. Again we told the newcomers that they already said there were only 15 units, no more, try a gamestop. Still they stayed in line, or got angry that they were not one of the 15, I mean they showed up before the store opened to get one, what more did people want?
So, at 7:00 the Target employee returned, this time he had a second employee and security with him, everyone lined up and he handed them a numbered and signed card for the wii or PS3 (all 15 of us first in line got the WII card, the PS3 cards were like consolation prizes to those that were left - I thought that Sony would be pleased to see that their console sucked.) Even though there were 15 and the tickets were handed out more than 30 people stayed (these people were told that the only way they would get a WII is if one of us could not pay.) We were told to have our tickets and be in line at 8:00 am.
Many of the 15 left and went to starbucks, the bathroom and to get cash from an ATM. Several of the people around me pulled out multiple credit cards and started calling to make sure balances were available.... it was awesome. After that was completed and everyone had payment, still 30 people waited. Still more people showed up, even waiting after we told them all the tickets were handed out, they waited.
At 8:00 we were let in. We were escorted into the store, the manager said "Hurry up and get these people out of here, I do not want them here." I laughed. He flushed, and said "We only make like $10 on these things and it is a huge hassle for us." Still people tried to go straight to the electronics counter and by one, only to be laughed at by the employees (not literally, but the looks on their faces with a line of people to the left was great.) One guy cut in the line - we had to tell him that he was welcome to stand there, but without a numbered ticket he would still find it difficult to get a unit.
We were let up one at a time to a specific register and purchased the WII and whatever accessories we wanted (they were very nice and held the accessories behind the counter until all the WII people got their units so we would be able to get the controllers we needed without incident.)
Amazingly enough we all had payment, the PS3 concession winners received their prized (though they were not happy about it) and we left.
I must say as my first camping experience I would do some things different (bring a propane heater next time,) but it was an awesome experience, the people that were there before 2 were a blast, really nice, and we spent time laughing at the people who thought that they could just casually walk up at 7:30 and get in line....
Also - the WII is the greatest console ever. My 5 year old is able to play without getting frustrated, and my wife had a blast. We opened my friends console and wrapped mine, so the whole family will be able to play on xmas. We are already planning a bowling tournament for that day.
Best games: WII Sports, Rayman RADDID, Trauma Center: Second Opinion. I cannot wait to see how the unit evolves as the developers figure out how to use the interface better. It feels like the first days of the DS. That touch screen was strange, no one knew how to develop for it, but now it is great, Nintendo shows again that the interface is more important than a fancy slide show.
Thanks

Went to Walmart yesterday, Dec 18. Was going to get a tv, etc instead of a Wii because I got tired of standing in lines at Walmart, Gamestop, etc and figured I would get one next month. Just as I got up to the cash register I noticed Walmart employees putting away new stock. I asked one of the guys when they were going to get some more Wii's in. He said they just got some in that morning(no ads, etc) and sold 5 but he would check in the stockroom to see if they had any more. About 5 minutes later he came back with one in his hand. I was shocked. I had looking for a Wii for the last 30 days and was always too late for one. Don't give up!!!
