Welcome to the Wii Warm Up, a new feature here at Wii Fanboy that we've shamelessly stolen from our friends at WoW Insider. The Warm Up will be a daily feature here, a morning topic wherein we can gather and talk about, y'know, stuff. Specifically, Wii stuff. Yeah, Wii stuff at Wii Fanboy. We know that's a tough one to swallow. For our inaugural topic, we thought we'd ask you about those replacement wrist straps. Did you go in for them, or did you skip out? Tell us your opinion on the new straps, or let us know why you didn't change if that was your choice. Inquiring fanboys want to know.

I didn't go for it. I don't want to support something that I don't believe is actually happening. In my opinion, I think most of those people we not using the strap and when they threw the Wiimote into the TV they cut the strap to blame it on someone else to hide their ignorance. Thus forcing someone else to fork out millions of dollars for something that isn't their fault. I've finished Zelda and Rayman in story mode, plus countless hours in Wii Sports. I don't see how that strap will break if it slips out of your hand. I just can't see it happening. Maybe after they are 5 or 10 years old and deteriorated, but not brand new ones.

I went for them, but still waiting for them to arrive. The original ones seem strong enough. But after a year or so they could be getting a bit worn, so it's good to have a few freebie replacements lieinbg around..

We can't get replacement straps in Europe (yet), so we'll have to do with the originals for now.

As soon as I heard about the scare and that you could buy new straps I did. they were only $1 each. I knew i would never throw it through my TV, but with seeing the insane relatives with it on the holidays, I couldnt take a chance breaking my 50".

I personally love these straps. I asked for four (though I only have one Wiimote) cuse I think they're pretty handy. One for my Wii mote, one for my DS Lite, one for my camera, and one for my iPod.

I requested 4 of 'em and received 8! One of my Wii straps were already breaking (and it was from casual use). The inside wire was exposed out of the cloth. The new straps are good, but one thing I notice is that when attaching a Nunchuk, the Wii straps are much more of a pain to insert (and remove) through the transparent cable attachment. Now I worry about breaking the cable from attaching and detaching the Nunchuk from the bottom of the Wii Remote. They need to upgrade their Nunchuck plastic bases now!

I still haven't gotten mine either. Oddly enough, I finally ordered the component cables last week and received them yesterday, while I ordered the replacement straps weeks ago.
Currently I'm not even using the original straps. I'm using the ones that came with the controller gloves so even if one does break I already have extras.

I've never even thought about swapping mine out. Honestly nobody that has ever used any of my controllers has ever let go of them even with some furious Wii boxing. Perhaps if I saw family members really needing the straps and they were wearing them down I'd probably go in for it.

I grabbed a set of new wrist straps myself. I'm at a college right now, so a lot of people want to give some bowling a whirl. The extra safety is greatly appreciated.

I ordered my replacement straps from NoE a while ago, haven't received them yet. Then again, I'm not surprised considering how long it takes them to send out items you purchase with your Stars.

i purchased a wii from the later batches and it already had the newer thicker strap. but i've played with my friend's pre-Christmas strap and sure enough, it snapped when i threw a fastball pitch as i sent the wiimote straight into the ground and dented my hardwood floor. for all you doubters, accidents do happen. when people start playing in the zone, they tend to let loose if you know what i'm saying.
one observation i've made with the newer strap is that it seems softer and more pliable. this allows for it to feel smoother and more comfortable strapped to your wrist. the older one is stiffer and rigid.

I did take advantage of the replacement strap. I only requested one and got mine a couple of days after Christmas. Oddly enough though I received yet another replacement strap last week, I guess NOA forgot they had hit me off or just like me a like. I of course subscribe to the latter.

I haven't had a problem with the remote straps. Maybe I should grab the replacements while the offer's good, but I'm too lazy when it's not an issue at my house.
Between my brother's console and mine:
2 Wii Consoles
5 Wii Remotes
150 hours played
32 players
0 injuries
0 broken items
The remote and strap itself don't magically disintegrate. Use proper care and all is well.

I ordered them, as I have a 9 year old that would take out the entire family room if we ever lost a strap. They came in right after New Year's. However, I only asked for 2 - then I found my 3rd and 4th remote. #4 had the new strap but #3 didn't so I'm still short one. Good thing we're only a family of 3 at the moment!

I got four new ones (what were you talking about, iveo? you can get them all free from nintendo!) I think they are cool, but personally the old ones were great too. And another thing, does anyone see ANY KIND OF REASON to use the plastic clip on the nunchuck? I find it totally pointless, and have never used it. Also, i swapped the wiimote wrist strap for my DS strap. It looks really cool, both on my ds, and my wiimote. And all the old wiimote straps I gave to friends who had DS lites, but didn't have wrist straps for them.

Playing Wii Sports with a friend, I definitely noticed sweaty hands, and can see how the thing might slip away. I'm very careful, too. Thus glad that I got & "installed" my new wrist straps.

I ordered my set of 4 replacement straps, and got them the same week...like in 2 or 3 days. Now that is some service!
While I have not had any problems with straps breaking, I do have 2 of them that are fraying from being put through the Nunchuk clippy-do. Not sure if they are snags or actual frays in the cord, but I thought I would go ahead and take advantage of the replacements, and keep the onld ones around for a while...you know just in case one of the replacements starts fraying.
To the poster who paid $1 each for the straps...why did you pay for these? Mine were free.

@wiiminator,
The Nunchuk clip is there in case the plug slips out of the Remote connector. Without the string attachment, the Nunchuk cord could go flying around, hitting objects and people before the player gets it under control.
At least that's what I assume. I never use it, either.

I got my wii & gear after the recall so I never dealt with the 'faulty' straps.
To tell you the truth I think you got to be a bit gimpy to lose control of the thing in the first place. My friends and I play while high as Hunter and nobody's wiimote slipped out of their hands.
Don't do drugs kids.
Even with my palms sweating like crazy I haven't slipped a wiimote yet. So while I don't think the straps are even necessary (probably only done for liability reasons) I still wear it, just to keep it out of the damn way.
I think there should be a bit of Darwinism involved: if you're playing with a total spaz, be wary or be injured. But like I said before, I can only imagine a complete twit really hurting someone.

I would like to challenge all the people who think the orginal straps will never break to whip their wiimote around as hard as they can on the strap in front of their televisions. I mean you all know how to hold a wiimote. You also know how to walk, right, so I can assume you've never tripped or fallen down?

I sent for 2 wrist straps on the day it started and got 4 a couple days later (before Christmas).
Nintendo owes me 26 cents for postage that they didn't put on the envelopes. They didn't put enough on.
I couldn't believe Nintendo was doing this. It's not their fault some idiots are throwing it around like that.

I ordered straps simply because they were free. I figured one day the straps may wear out but more likely simply get dirty and I might want to replace them. Not because Nintendo gave out faulty straps though. It takes a real idiot to break this. I figure if you break your tv then that's what you get. I and no one who has used my wii have come close to throwing the wiimote from our grasp.

All the kids I've seen play the wii (especially while hopped up on Christmas candy) grip the damn thing like their arm wrestling. I was more worried about my little bro crushing the wiimote than breaking the TV. He is a freakishly strong kid.

Well, I got two of the new ones. Right after I put the first one on my controller, I tested it by quickly pulling the end of the strap away from the controller several times. Nothing happened.
Awesome.
So I did the same thing to the controller with the old wrist strap, and... well, now I know why so much stuff is getting destroyed.

I phone the big N and was given a codestorm email. They seem to be doing the distribution for Nintendo Wii straps in the UK. My straps arrived in a couple of weeks and do give me a bit more confidence.
I'm now happy to whirl my wii-mote around my write, hands-free, when I need to celebrate a particularly well won rally.

I only have 2 controllers, but I put in for 4 of the wrist straps since I know I'll be buying 2 more controllers sometime later this year.
I haven't had any problems with the original straps, and at first I was going to save the new straps to use *ONLY* in case one of the original straps broke, but they're so much beefier than the original ones AND about an inch longer so I decided to put them on. I'm sure Nintendo did tensile strength tests on the original straps and I'm sure these new ones aren't really any stronger, but when you look at them side-by-side with the original straps they LOOK stronger and the added length was nice since my Wii is played exclusively by the 21-and-up crowd.
TL;DR version: I didn't need them, but I got them because they were free.

I'm european so those new wristwraps are quite hard to find at this moment and i usually hold my wiimote tough enough in my hand when i play wii sports & etc so i think this old one will be safety enough for me.. And yes, you could broke your strap by whipping your wiimote from strap like crazy while not holding of your wiimote but who the heck plays like that anyway..
