Three games up today for the Virtual Console in North America -- two disparate shooters and, just to mix things up, a racing game. Though after Gradius, we're not sure if Nintendo shouldn't take a break from scrolling shooters in favor of something a little different for a while, since after Gradius, there's many a game that just doesn't seem quite as good. And according to you guys, the VC needs to start branching out a little more anyway! Perhaps next week. For this week, however:Xevious (NES) -- 500 points
R-Type III: The Third Lightning (SNES) -- 800 points
MotoRoader (TurboGrafx 16) -- 600 points
[Thanks to everyone who tipped us on this!]

Did you really need to be "tipped" about this VC update? Isn't Nintendo's press release page the ONE page you should be looking at most frequently? (http://press.nintendo.com/loginSplash.jsp) ... You guys run a GREAT site, but I'm really surprised that it took you until 2:30pm to get this news up, when most other sites had it up hours before... Seems like on Sunday nights and Monday mornings, someone from this site should be watching for that Ninty press release like a hawk...

I've already downloaded all 3 of those games. R-Type III is amazing.
They've really got to come out with an RPGMaker-type game for the VC that allows you to make a game with Wii Remote functionality to share with others.

I just bought Gradius and its pretty fun but I suck at shooters so I think its really hard. Is R-Type easier/harder? Should I start with R-Type 1 or just go right to 3? What about Soldier Blade? Never playing any of these games im really in the dark.

I always found R-Type easier. I'm not knocking Gradius, it was a very innovative game. R-Type just improved upon it. The thing that set R-Type apart from everything else was the force ball weapon. That made the game a hell of a lot easier. Imagine playing Gradius with shields that never wear down. Now, imagine you can launch those shields into enemies and then retract it.
