Like their previous sale, Circuit City is making available to consumers two high-profile Wii games on the cheap. The first title, Red Steel, might not be the kind of game that consumers would go rushing to purchase due to its low review scores. However, the second title, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, received much better scores. Still, for the small price of $30 USD, is it worth it to check out Red Steel?
How many of you plan on taking advantage of this deal?
[Thanks Gonzo!]

I'd contest that Red Steel also received some very high review scores (particularly from some European console mags that aren't into FPS's as much as the internet crowd). I was personally pleasantly surprised at how satisfying the control mechanic (the major sources of complaint) actually does work. I'd definitely recommend an experimentation, bearing in mind there will be lots of solutions for the same problem.

Nice price point! I'm planning on grabbing those two myself, but I do fancy picking up Gotlieb Classic Pinball which is down to 24.99 GBP on amazon.co.uk right now.

I was holding out on Rayman until a price drop, so this news a few days ago was great. Unfortunately the price is in-store only, and with no Circuit Citys in my area I was forced to..
Print out a sheet, go to Walmart, and force them to price match ;)

Red Steel, which I paid $50 for at launch, is NOT a $50 game. However, if you're willing to stick with it for a few levels and you set the weapon aiming to "Fast" (which the game doesn't recommend for new players but is needed to make the control scheme viable), it's most certainly a sub $40 game. For $30, yes, I think it's definitely worth the price.
The longer you play and the more familiar you are with the Wiimote, the less awkward the game feels. Anyone who's beaten a Wii title or two already will likely adapt to Red Steel much more easily than the very first reviewers who gave it 4/10 ratings. The truth is that it's a 7/10, and that fits with its new $30 price tag.

I tapped in my zip code, and got a big fat "NOT OFFERED" across the entire state and into the next. Guess that's a big fat NO for me. Wonder if I can try and follow up like #3. Thanks for that idea vidGuy!

Hey yea. It's not available anywhere. I typed in several zip codes for across the country and got "not carried" for every single store in the lists for both titles.
What's up with that?

I put Red Steel on my Amazon wish list long before the Wii even came out. Once people had started to talk about how bad a game it was I removed it from my wish list but apparently I was too late because I did get it for Xmas. Being lazy, I decided that I would just open it up and play it versus trying to return it at a store. Man I wish I hadn't opened it. The game is such a disappointment. I think the main reason it disappoints so much is because it was touted as a first person shooter but its not really like a doom style FPS - rather, its more like those arcade games where you would have a light gun and the game is just "on rails" for the most part. The only redeeming quality so far was the swordplay but that is too few and far between to matter in an otherwise annoying POS game.
On the other hand. I am considering buying Rayman due to all the good things I have heard about it. And for $30, what the heck!

I sold Red Steel back to EB for $20 after i bought it for $50 on release... sighhh
I played the game once for an hr or so, and felt sick afterward (never happend before in a video game). It was also not very fun. I also bought rayman on release and it is very fun, only thing I dont like is the multiplayer system.

I sadly bought rayman for 50 bucks due to boredom and the desire for another multiplayer game. Reviews were pretty good, 8s, and i wouldn't even say this game is worth 30 bucks. The games are quick and most don't allow for 4 players at a time to play or 2 for that matter. Plus the games are not that much fun at all. I can't express it any more, but do your self a favor and pass on Rayman: Lame Rabbids.

I really think Red Steel is underated. I got it yesterday at Best Buy with the price match. Perhaps all the bad reviews lowered my expectations, but I'm quite happy with it for $30. And it is not "on rails". An example of a game on rails is Rez, or Panzer Dragoon Orta, or even Killer 7. When you can walk anywhere in a room, it is NOT on rails. It's just very linear...meaning you will know where to go without searching around for five minutes and stopping the action. Hell, Rainbow Six vegas is linear (aside from having different ways into a room).
Perhaps the reviewers who scored it so poorly were either trying to not give any credit to the game for use of the wiimote (reserving the credit for Nintendo). In my opinion, that's like scoring Guitar Hero without the guitar controller. But I really think it's pretty fun if you like FPSs. It's really interesting to play with the wiimote, and compared to how similar most FPSs are to each other, it's a nice change.

red steel is totally worth 30 bucks. some users are having problems with the controls. (the only reason it's reviewed so low) with little effort i was able to fix the controls so they are usuable. i changed the sensitivity, changed the channel that my router operates on (i honestly think this helped the most)

I just called my local CC (because it seemed so wierd that ~10 stores would have it "not available" at the same time) and she said they usually have it, but are sold out. I looked at the "Wii Games" category online, and every title BUT Red Steel and Rayman are listed as online-only. I asked about that, and she said she thinks they have "pretty much all" the Wii games (except the one they were out of) in the store, so I told her to tell her manager about the error on the website, and she said she would. Just so you all know -- don't trust the online availability indicator.

It's definitely interesting to see the different perspectives there are on Red Steel just on this comments page. As I said above, I was surprised at how well I thought it worked. Then I read UpIrons comment, which is strangely enlightening. He (or she) said it's like the old arcade shooters, and it's kinda true. Maybe that's why it's dividing people, and I look forward to the return of Time Crisis ruling our lives.
Interestingly, also counter to UpIrons opinion, I thought the sword fighting is by far the worst element in the game. Being gesture based rather than directly interactive, it removed this kind of direct interface that I thought was working well in the rest of the game and actually removed immersion.

James,
I had the same issue. Actually, I didn't even get to find out if they had any because no one at Circuit City bothered answering phones, and one store I called still had it's closed message on. Circuit City seems to only have sales like this on items the don't have in store. I tried a bunch of areas and could not find any that showed in-store inventory. Just go to Best Buy or something and have them price match.

i personally prefer not to deal with circuit city ever.
the ones in the NY/NJ area i have dealt with were never clean or organized, getting customer service is a joke and the worst experience is calling them.
calls are reserved for the people in the customer service area which are apparently always busy, clueless, and have no idea how to transfer a call to the right department, and even when they do, it's a shot in the dark if anyone will actually pick up.
this has happened on multiple occasions with 5 different stores of theirs. Yet, oddly enough i never have any of those problems with bestbuy.
Stricter highering standards?
ever since those experiences i have saved all my electronics purchases for bestbuy and walmart, and even though i would never expect anyone at walmart to be able to work a phone, they manage to keep everything organized and neat, so going to the local store is usually no hassle and probably quicker.
