As much as we want to believe that the Wiimote is the end-all-be-all for video games, we have to concede that there are several genres in which a traditional controller is a more appropriate choice. Nintendo has already noted that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will use a standard controller, but ... which is it? Though Gamecube controller support has yet to be officially confirmed, we have to assume a player may choose between the GC standard and their own classic controller, offered for twenty dollars. What's the problem? Well, the classic controller sucks. If you want four-player Smash (and my God you do), you'll need to spend an additional eighty dollars on peripherals that you might never use again. Furthermore, as it plugs into the expansion port, you have to deal with the awkward Wiimote just sitting in your lap. On the flip side, how many retailers have been carrying copious quantities of Wavebirds? They're still out there, of course, but Nintendo may have to conduct a Wavebird relaunch campaign for those of us who don't already have the gear. What are you hoping for, and how do you think Nintendo can pull it off?

Ideally Nintendo will allow both Gamecube and Classic controllers to play Smash Bros Brawl. If they went with only GC controllers then new Nintendo owners won't be happy and if they go with only Classic controllers then previous GC owners won't be happy.
I've got 4 perfectly good GC controllers that I've had for years. It'd be a shame for them to be useless for Brawl since they were purchased for Melee in the first place.

I thought about buying a Wavebird, but who's to say how many future Wii games will support it. It's clear that Nintendo would prefer we all buy Classic controllers, of which I have one. And yes, these controllers are way too expensive considering Ninty's profit forecasts. Another concern is a controller multi player combo. Will SSB support a Wavebird Vs. Classic controller match up?

Perhaps Nintendo will do something like Wii Play and bundle a classic controller in, that would make it a definite buy for many people...

That just game me an idea... 8 player Smash Bros!
Think about it, these old Turbo Grafx 16 games on the Virtual Console that were 5-player are still 5 player if you have enough Wii Remotes & Gamecube controllers.
Wouldn't it be neat (if even more chaotic) if Nintendo used that same type of programming to allow the use of 4 Classic and 4 Gamecube controllers all at the same time on Smash Bros Brawl?
Now that I think about it, I might be disappointed if they DON'T do that.

I personally love the VC controller, but I agree that buying another three for SSBB would be a pain, multiplied by the fact that I'd only use two of the controllers for most other games.
I think allowing both VC and GC controllers is the best option. I've got a total of 6 of those (1 VC, 5 GC - I thought I'd lost one at one time), so I don't think I'd have a problem ;)
BTW, the main complaint on the VC controller is that "you have to deal with the awkward Wiimote just sitting in your lap". I think that's a small price to pay to have a classic controller that's not tied directly to the console with any cord AND doesn't need its own batteries AND costs the same as a nunchuk.
If the VC controller didn't work the way it does, it would
1) cost somewhere around $30 to $35
2) require batteries for the Bluetooth transmitter
I much prefer the method Nintendo has. I set the remote to my side and don't notice it until it's time to pick it up again.

Take the original wavebird controller design. Instead of having a cable that plugs into the wiimote, have it with a recess designed where the battery pack would normally be so the Wiimote can be inserted into the controller. the Wavebird controller would draw power from the wiimote while plugged in and also be able to still use the wiimote to provide motion sensing and pointing abilities.
This should also come with an attachment that can be plugged into the controller in place of the wiimote. this attachment will contain a battery pack for power, and also the wireless transmitter/receiver that the wavebird uses. This would also come with the corresponding end that plugs into the standard gamecube controller port.
By doing this, you not only have the "not quite too oldschool" feel of the gamecube controller (I personally found it very comfy to hold) you also get to use the wiimote simultaneously AND you don't have a cord hanging all over the place. On top of this, you can plug in the battery pack and still use it with the gamecube games as a gamecube controller, so it becomes the perfect investment piece for the Wii.

I agree, I think Nintendo would want us to all purchase a Classic Controller but not everyone needs one. I purchased one because this is my first Nintendo home console (besides the NES) and a wired GameCube controller was $25, so I saved $5 by getting the Classic Controller. In all honesty, it isn't that bad of a controller. It isn't as comfortable as the Wiimote or the Xbox 360's controller but it will still do.
I think Nintendo will add both GameCube and Classic Controller support so they can please both new and older Nintendo fans.

That is brilliant. And I too would be angry if they didn't do that. That would make for an insane party game.

I have a classic controller, and for the looks of it they might do something similar to Dragon Ball Z:BT2. IF they do, I will love nintendo forever.
If a third party did quiet a good job (Just for being the first game to have multi-input device type of game) They can surely do with Smash Bros. I don't mind if they did add Wiimote function as an option, I would play it anyways to see how they intergrate something like that.
If Nintendo adds all three as choices (and BTW DBZ:BT2 you can mix up your controls i.e. Wave Bird Vs Classic Controls and Wiimote Vs whatever both) Then wii have a winner here folks.
If Mad Catz can release just before a Wiimote holder for the Classic controller, then I'll jump and buy it because it does get in the way when you are in the peak of battle.
Here is hoping for the best.
Note: I don't know why nintendo didn't do something clever like a controller attachment for both input devices when they launched the system before?

#4 and #8:
One was able to plug 5 controllers into the turbografx (via the turbotap), so developers made 5-player games for it.
Have you ever seen anyone plugging 8 controllers into the N64?
No? So did anyone develop 8-player games for the N64? No.
It has been said a few times, I'll say it again:
There won't be any new features, new modes, better graphics or other gimmicks in VC-titles.

How about Nintendo releases $10 Classic GC controller shaped peripherals that the wiimote slides into and maybe even gives one bundled with brawl?

#vidGuy: Perhaps there a gap in the market here for Mad Catz the wii-mote holster/neck-chain. It just clips to your belt or around your neck to keep the mote safe while playing VC games with the Classic Controller.

Listen the bottom line is Nintendo needs to adress their fans and come out with a Classic style controller that is REALLY WIRELESS and not something that plugs into another. For cry'in out load the system comes with Wi-Fi!!! Why not a wireless controller(Classic Type)!!

If SSBB doesn't work with the Wavebird, then I'm just going to skip that game. (Heck, I still haven't played its predecessor.)
I'm already committed to owning two wiimotes, two nunchucks, and two GC controllers, and I already think that's more than I should need to enjoy my Wii.

I just bought a classic controller. Gamecube controllers were more than 20 bucks. The cable is slightly annoying, but it is long enough not to bother me, and Im still waiting for the clip for the wiimote to attach to the back of the classic. The slot and release is there, Im not sure why it isnt being utilized.
@14:
Half the people are complaining that the thing costs 20 bucks. Add the bluetooth functionality and the power components, and Im sure that thing would retail for 40. Not to mention batteries. Ill just keep the thing in my lap.

Hay guys you aren't forgetting something? Haven't you been wandering what the 2 slits in the back of the classic controler are for?
ITS FOR CONNECTING YOUR REMOTE TO THE CLASSIC CONTROLER
My theory is the following.
1. The remotes pointer technology will be used to navigate through Smash bros menu while it is straped to the back of the classic controller.
2. When you are ready to fight, you will keep the remote connected to the classic controler. Haven't you noticed that the classic controler is pretty light weight? With the remote on, it gives more weight for a more cofortable playing feeling. Also the remote being connected during gameplay enhances the following.........
3. Since the classic controler has no rumble, and the remote does, if you have the remote connected to the back of the classic controler.... TADA!!! you get a classic controller with rumble
4. Best of all, having the remote connected to the back of the classic controler GETS RID OF THE REMOTE IN YOUR LAP!!!
I think, and hope this is what the developers will do with the game. If it does end up being a "remote in lap" type of game, that would be ashame.

I'm sure I'm not the only person with just two wiimotes, which means that if you *have* to use the Classic controller (e.g. no GC support), I would need two extra wiimotes as well, and be out not 80 bucks to get to 4-player readiness, but (4*20) + (2*40) = 160 bucks! Ow! I think it would make no sense to support only one or the other -- they would definitely need to support both.

@dsmaster65,
Yes the slits in the back of the VC controller are rumored to be for a "remote-cradle", but we haven't seen this item and have no idea if it will ever be available, let alone before Brawl comes out.
I like the idea of adding rumble (and sound) to the VC controller. One reminder though, the VC controller's analog stick can be used to navigate menus. It works in the Home Button Menu, and the Channel Menu, at least.

I was annoyed enough at the $60 (total) price point for an additional controller, but forcing me to buy a classic controler that I won't use for anything else is crazy. I would say that they need to make SSBB work with the motion sensing of the wiimote, or give you the option of the wiimote or a GC controller. While Xbox may kill you with pay as you games, Nintendo appears to be gearing up for pay-as-you go control. Let's hope this isn't really the case...

People, calm down. Brawl will be compatable with the Classic controller as well as the GC controller. When the game was announced HAL, the company behind the game, said don't throw out your old controllers yet. Thus, the game will support GC controllers. It will support the classic controller as well because it would seem foolish for a game to require a controller for a system not in production anymore. It's unknown if it will be compatible with the Wiimote by itself but I'm sure there'll be a control scheme for it that most people won't use.
