In response to the rumor created by Lee's statement, CVG asked Nintendo to comment on the situation. Nintendo said "We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop." So, we might or might not see an original games channel per se, but we will see original content in some shape or form. Rock!

Does this mean we in Europe can play games for SNES that wasn't first released for it?!

I had assumed (what with the Virtual Console proving the capability) that they'd start selling "independently developed" games for the Wii.

Original content is what the Wii Ware section of the Wii Shop Channel was created for, not just the browser....

What they need to do is to allow for flash programmers to make downloadable games, and since Opera already supports flash, it wouldn't be a hard progression. That way users wouldn't have to log in to the programmer's websites (or Wiicade) every time they want to play.

This could be a great cross-over with the burgeoning homebrew community. Combine this pool of talent for creativity with the wii-mote/nunchuck and I think we could see some really innovative games.
It's great to see a return to the bedroom games production of the late 80's. So much of the games industry was build on this sort of enterprise, what better place to find fresh games and ideas!

I still don't see what's stopping some enterprising hacker from building a Website specifically designed for downloading Games directly to the Wii, in a manner similar to the Shop Channel
Then you would be able to download outside ROMs, MAMEs, and ISOs, ones not available on VC...

See, what I want is a monthly service where I can play all the games I want on the Virtual console 24/7. That way, I can choose to borrow the games every month, or simply purchase the ones I want to keep forever.

I highly doubt that they'll make an "Original Games" channel, but instead make each game a separate channel, a la the virtual console games and the Internet Channel.
Hopefully, they allow the indy developers and the homebrew community to jump on this opportunity because I'm pretty sure that Nintendo said a long time ago that the Revolution was meant for those with the big ideas and not necessarily the big budget.

This is old news. The Wii Shop channel is an avenue for more than VC games; hasn't anyone else noticed that the Virtual Console section is actually only part of the Wii Shop channel?

I'm pretty sure the "original games channel" or at least the original component of the shop channel will be where we'll get updates to some VC games with updated graphics and/or online play. The shop channel manual has always had that bit about updating previously downloaded games and nobody knows why yet.

Bingo. Reggie Fils-Aime has hinted at this before. I can't wait to see what tools Nintendo will present.
