That's right kids, today US gamers will finally be able to download
Mario Kart 64, along with a handful of other kickass titles as well. The other games, which include
Contra III: The Alien Wars,
Bonanza Bros., and
Comix Zone (one of our favorite Genesis games), will all be available with
Mario Kart 64 starting today at 9am PST (12pm EST). The breakdown on cost goes:
- Mario Kart 64 - N64 - 1000 Wii Points - 1 to 4 players
- Contra III: The Alien Wars - 800 Wii Points - 1 to 2 players
- Bonanza Bros. - 800 Wii Points - 1 to 2 players
- Comix Zone - 800 Wii Points - 1 player
So who is getting what?

America is getting like, way better VC games then EU! first you guys got Link to the past, now you got Mario Kart as well...
What im trying to say is that you get everything from europe that's good + more good titles, while we most of the time only get crap...
Life's unfair :'(
I'll just hope LTTP will come to Eu soon...
Americans: Have fun :)
Greetings Glenn

Does that mean you can only use the Classic Controller on these games like MK?
I have 2 of them unopened and haven't needed them yet, so I've been debating on returning them.

I'm fairly certian you can use the GC controller with Mario Kart 64. I would keep the classic controller for the SNES games alone.

You can use GameCube controllers. I actually prefer the GCN wavebird over the Classic Controller for the N64 games.

#1: Europe already got Mario Kart 64 on friday. And we got Contra 3 the friday before that(As Super Probotector) Seems like Europe gets some of the better titles first. Let's hope Starfox 64 comes soon...
Also, Mario Kart 64 works with both the Classic Controller and the Gamecube controller. It's pretty much optimized for both, using A as accelerate and B as brake, and the L button is used for weapons(While ZR and ZL on the CC function as L on the original Mario Kart 64) Same to the treatment Mario 64 got.
Also, the resolution's higher, resulting in sharper graphics and no blur(Except for low-res textures of course)
Personally, I prefer the CC over the GC controller for most games. It just feels a bit better and more natural somehow.

Thanks for the replies regarding controllers... I guess my other question is if I can use the Wii-mote for this game as a stand alone piece....

Hm. Do I really need this game? I have Mario Kart DS. Contra might be better. I dunno. Do people like Contra?

Bad Mojo,
As far as I can tell so far, you can only use the classic controller and GC controller for N64 games. You cannot use the Wiimote with MK64. Personally I use the Wiimote for NES and Turbo GFX games, classic controller for SNES and Genesis, and Wavebird for N64.

Has anyone who has played MK64 on the VC noticed that all of the slowdown that plagued the N64 version is gone on the VC? Its like a whole new game

As far as I can tell, there's no way to just seamlessly plug in an SD card and have it act as a memory expansion for your Wii. However, I ran a test yesterday: I copied a VC game (Bonk's Adventure) on to an SD card, and then *erased* it from my Wii. There's no way to run the game off of the card, but you can copy it back on to the Wii from the card, and then it will work just fine.
So I think that when we hit our system memory limits (which will definitely happen, so long as the VC keeps to its release schedule), we'll have to swap games off and on to our system via an SD card. Then again, I presume Nintendo will have a memory expansion available by then.
Another test I ran yesterday: multiplayer MK64 works with a combination of GC controllers and Classic Controllers. Just plug a GC controllers in to ports 2, 3, and 4 whilst your Wiimote/Classic Controller functions as player 1.

If I put a Gamecube disc in the Wii, can I use the Wii classic controller to play the game? I'm trying to decide whether to get a gamecube controller or a Wii classic controller.

Woot!!! Comix Zone! Been waiting for that, probably be my next VC purchase. Contra 3 is a solid maybe after I beat some of the VC games I already got, and MK64 is in the lower maybe, it's been awhile but for some reason I remember specifically not liking that version much. Even though I liked pretty much every other Mario Kart game I've played, maybe it's just me...

Nope Classic controllers don't work with Cube games for some unknown reason. Totally should, but the Wii disconnects and powers down all 'motes while doing GC games, and since the Classic is plugged into the 'mote, it no longer works by proxy. I'm personally hoping they change this via an update latter, because where I find the GC controller to be the most comfortable controller outside of the 'mote, I only have one WaveBird and the GC controllers cords are waaaaaaaaaay to short...
