It's that wonderful time again when we all turn on our Wiis (at 9am PST, natch) and discover the latest Virtual Console releases. This week, there may not be many, but many argue that Super Mario World is the best of the Mario bunch. The other two titles are a bit less well-known:- Super Mario World - SNES - 800 Wii Points - 1-2 players
- Vigilante - TG-16 - 600 Wii Points - 1player
- Gain Ground - Genesis - 800 Wii Points - 1-2 players
[Update 1: World, not Land. Our bad.]

You wrote Super Mario Land in your final list of games.
Although it would be sweet if they had Game Boy games on the VC.
FINALLY though. My favorite Mario game ever.

I'm conflicted about Vigilante. I personally loved it, but objectively I'm pretty sure it's a terrible game. Buy it ONLY if you absolutely loved NES Kung Fu.

Anybody know if you can organize the Wii channels? It's been buggin' me for awhile, and with my love of the virtual console, there'll be games all over the place.

Most definitely buying SMW. It's already up, BTW.
I'm pretty happy with the VC lately. LoZ:LttP, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario World in 3 consecutive weeks? Awesome! I've been getting a new game every week.
And, yes Charles. You can pick up any of the channels (expect the disc channel) with A+B and move it into any position on any one of the pages. I've got my pages organized by function - first page is all games (Disc+VC games) and the second page is the Mii Channel, Weather, News, etc.
My next wish for the VC? Super Mario RPG and Super Metroid.

#4: Yes, you can. Just pick them up by pushing both A and B at the same time, and put them down where you want.

organize the channels? hold A+B over a channel and drag it to a new spot. i believe this is in the manual.

You grab a channel and hit A and B together to pick it up (Mii style) and then you move it to the slot you want it.
Personally I have all my VC games on the second page. Easier to organize that way.
Also - did Super Mario World come with All Stars? I thought that was just the NES games. I'm not sure we'll ever see that though. Nintendo would probably rather release them one at a time than actually give you an all-in-one package that costs you less.

HalfEvilHomer,
SMW was not on Super Mario All-stars. All-stars had the NES games (I,II,III, and Lost Levels).
I for one will not be buying SMW on the VC, as the cartridge is conveniently sitting in my SNES right next to my Wii.

right on, this is the one that I have been waiting for. I am not too worried about getting a duplicate if I get super mario all stars because SMW didnt come with it. It may have been on the same cartridge, but I doubt SMW will be released with SMA. Now just give me super metroid, pilot wings and mario paint (adapted to wiimote of course)

I never post on sites like this, but I can't help it this time. The controls for Super Mario World on VC SUCK with the GameCube controller. I can't even stand it. Any idea how to change them? The B button jumps, A spins, and X and Y are dash. It's messing with my mojo.

You can "Grab" a channel and drop it where you want by pressing A and B together. You can then move it to the next page my holding the channel over the plus or minus icons to the right and left.

Super Mario All Stars actually did come with Super Mario World at one point. They're out there if you really want one: http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQprZ56245225QQcpidZ1377240474
Thanks to all for the A+B "trick". Guess it's time to read the manual and see what else I don't know...

I second the crappy controls, think they could be a little more blatant about wanting us to shell out for classic controllers?

Actually guys, while Super Mario World doesn't normally come with Super Mario All-Stars, there was a special cart that had both of them if you got the SNES at that time. I own one. That may be where the confusion is coming in.

Kboy,
I have to whole-heartedly agree with you on that one. SMW is nearly unplayable on the GameCube controller. As far as I know, there's no way to remap the keys, which means I may have to get one of those damn VC controllers after all. I feel like the only reason you can't remap the keys yourself is because Nintendo wants to sell more VC controllers to people with GC controllers.

I kept trying to move them around by pushing B, then figured i had just hallucinated the videos of seeing people move channels around (this will help, since i keep my SD Memory card so i can rotate VC Titles on and Off the memory)

To all those who complain about the controls, I bought Contra 3 for the VC, and I've been playing it with the Cube pads. I agree with all who complain, Contra and Super Mario World are unplayable with the Cube pads!
I already wrote to Nintendo to let them hear my bitching regarding this (And Gunstar Heroes not being able to use the Joystick, though thats Sega's fault, not Nintendo's....)

How has no one commented yet on the awesomeness that is Gain Ground? I go from reading Kotaku, where the poster on this VC release (Michael Fahey), didn’t even “remember [Gain Ground] in the slightest” (blasphemy) to seeing GG relegated here to suffer as a game “a bit less well-known”. Ouch. Ouch, ouch, ouch.
Since no one is going to stick up for it, I’ll be damned if I'll let this pinnacle of Sega perfection go unheralded. Gain Ground rocks. It rocks so hard that your pet rock is shivering in a corner for fear of the enormously heavy rock that is Gain Ground. I think it might have even peed a bit in fright.
This game was one of the best around in the late 1980’s and it is one of the very select few games that I will purchase for the VC.
Simply put, if you do not play Gain Ground, then you can’t come over to my house any more for punch and cookies. The punch is Hawaiian and the cookies are chocolate chip. The game is Gain Ground. Play it.

IF you have a PS2, a cheaper alternative to the classic controller is to get a $5-$10 PS2 to Gamecube controller converter. Works great for SNES games because the layout is very similar.

If you don't have a Classic controller, try to get one. The GC control is messed up because they used the name of the button, not its location, to traslate the controls. Yeah, it's another $20, but it's worth it, especially compared to the cheap-feeling nunchuk. The Classic controller is awesome!

Yeah after complaining earlier today I went straight out to get a classic controller so I didn't waste $8 on the unplayable game. Feel a little manipulated like it was $28 for a 15-year-old game but it definitely helps like you'd expect

I'm not liking the SMW port job. I remember it slowing down a bit on some parts with multiple enemies, but it seems worse on the Wii version. If Nintendo spent some more time with these game ports, they could actually REDUCE these sorts of problems, not just leave them in or make them worse.
And their excuse for Mario Kart 64 ghost saves is more ridiculous: "Because it doesn't." No, because you don't want to take the time to get it done the right way. When people are paying 8-10 dollars for a game that's 10 years old, it would be nice to at least get everything working. Kart 64 should have been reduced priced because of that ghost problem.
Sorry, but I'm disappointed with Nintendo's VC approach thus far.

#32: Any game with savegames works like it did on the original console, and SMW has a save feature with 3 save spots.
#30: Remembering isn't the same as actually comparing. In that same vein, the N64 games feel like they run smoother and better compared to the original console(Or it could just be the better resolution and graphics)
Also, the lack of ghost saving isn't a big miss. It's a feature barely anybody used since the ghosts take up quite a bit of space on the actual N64 memory pak and you can only store 2 of 'em. Not to mention that one of the uses is completely gone: You can't take your pak over to a friend's place and show them how it's done. As a result, it's pretty much turned into a useless feature and left out for that reason. I for one don't miss it.
Controller Pak emulation's not that difficult, and any game that requires it will have it included(Most likely along with a dedicated controller pak save for each game that uses it, combined into a single file for easy management and copying)
Now, if they "forget" Rumble Pak emulation for Starfox 64, I'll complain.

SMW has the 3 save spots the original version had. You can ALWAYS save your position on ALL VC games by going back to the Wii Menu using the home button. This creates a save state for the game that will be loaded next time you play the game. Unfortunately, it is not a permanent save state, which means you can't save multiple locations in a game. But this feature is handy for games like Contra 3 that don't allow saves in themselves.
I agree that at the current price Nintendo needs to offer at least everything that was in the original game... but I also agree with Smoke that ghost data isn't a big deal. Rumble support will be, but even a supposed "next-gen" system doesn't support rumble.

@34 thanks for the conformation of the saving scheme. i knew about the save state, sadly you can only have one per title but at least it's something for the games that don't have any built-in save system.

I would love to ask this question. I'm going to have to go out and buy a classic controller because the controls of SMW with the gamecube controller are horrible. Can you play two player SMW with one classic controller or do i have to buy two?

@andy,
Let me go check.
Ok, so the good thing is you don't NEED two classic controllers... but you'll want two. The game looks for the second player connected as the second remote; there's no passing of Remote 1 allowed. The only one to use the same classic controller for both players is to disconnect it from Remote 1 and connect it to Remote 2, and vice versa, at the end of every turn.
