GoNintendo's Kevin Cassidy (perhaps better known as Rawmeat Cowboy) had some interesting things to say about attitudes in the Nintendo fanboy community. Cassidy believes that we refuse to be pleased; we moan about a lack of third party titles, but decry those we have as being too kiddie, or old ports that are late to the party, or just crap. Essentially, he seems to say that while we love Nintendo and Nintendo's games, for the rest, we would maybe rather have a library that more resembles that of other consoles. And we don't want them a year later.
It's an interesting point, and over at big daddy Joystiq, Ross Miller countered with the notion that while "they" talk a lot, sales figures don't necessarily reflect this side of popular opinion. Still, Nintendo's uneven history with third party developers is a matter of record, and it's established that many people do think of Nintendo as the "kiddie" console.
It's a lot to consider this early in the morning, but it does leave us with a few questions. Are we, as a fanbase, too demanding? Are we asking too much of Nintendo ... or has the bar merely been set so high over the years that we expect nothing less than the best? Are we right to snub most third party offerings? Like any form of media, only a small percentage of releases actually shine, after all.

Bull.....
People just like to complain about Nintendo. It is part of gaming life and really there is no need. Just look at a lot of the games XBox and Playstation get that are considered "kiddie". You do not see that outcry in the community saying that the game is too kiddie. Put that same game on a Nintendo console and the whole gaming community is in an uproar.

I don't mind kiddie games, I don't mind 3rd party games, and I don't mind ports.
What I DO mind is when 3rd parties start jumping on Nintendo's Wii in order to whore out a half assed game.
Here's my tips:
Develop an intuitive control scheme, it doesn't have to be completely original, but at least check for if it feels comfortable and natural for all aspects of control.
Create a half decent story or premise, and then build the game from that THEN worry about controls.
If you're going to port a game, at least make it a somewhat popular game, otherwise shut up and take the flack you get and make sure you work your ass off to improve it and prove the naysayers wrong.
Don't expect that if you start from a mediocre game, that somehow the Wiimote will make it a good game
Don't think that "Mature" = Gore/Sex. When I want a mature game, I'm not asking for blood and guts and sex, I'm asking for a mature theme, such as having to make tough decision, which might include the need for violence in one case and require you to refrain from violence in another, or both will work, but with different results. Having to save people that will die and not come back if you screw up. Have flirting between men and women that is left at JUST flirting. Use blood when necessary, but don't go over the top just for the sake of gore.
Heck, will someone make a port of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2? They aren't graphic intensive, but it had a GREAT story and excellent character banter, fans are STILL working on debugging and adding features to both.
Take them both, stick them together, smooth up the graphics, tweak to fit, and you've got one heck of an awesome game. Plus it already is built for online multiplayer gameplay.

I don't buy the linked-to article's premise. The entire life of the Gamecube was all about the disappointment of lackluster 3rd-party support. Then along comes RE4 -- beautiful, fun as hell, lots of replay value, game of the year material -- and a GC exclusive, at least for a few months.
It's like living your whole life as Pharoh's slave, then one day you wake up pampered by servants and treated like royalty. This lasts for a day, or a week, or a month. Then the next day, you're a slave again. People don't bitch about the GC's (and now the Wii's) small library because they're too picky, or harbor some secret loathing for non-Nintendo games; they bitch about the library because it's clearly *possible* to get fantastic 3rd-party games on Nintendo consoles, but there aren't any (or at least, there aren't enough).
I think the reaction is because on other platforms, most hits are 3rd-party, while on Nintendo platforms, most hits are first-party. This may well be because other platforms simply have a smaller percentage of first-party titles, but whatever the root cause, people clearly want Nintendo to take steps to fix it.

just dont make crap. Im sorry that third parties have to try on a nintendo platform. Yes Nintend fanboys are picky and should be. We play some of the best games in the world and when you insult us by making us pay 50 bucks for a psp or ps2 port we do take it personally. (at least I do) In RE4's case I do feel bad though. That game was great and it didnt sell nearly as well as it should have. Of course capcom announcing it was coming to ps2 probably had more to do with that then anything. Nintendo fans were pissed enough about the whole fabulos five fiasco. I can count a number of friends that didnt buy any capcom games for that very reason. Is it fair? No not really but we support games That make us happy and capcom was not making us happy at the time. so to the developers that are whining about this here is some advice...... TRY. No insulting ports of not so great PS2 or PSP games. You want to sell a game on the Wii then make a great game!

I think games that are more cartoony or kiddie also have basic or tired gameplay. They are often made for younger people who don't have a long term memory of the history of video games.
People who have been playing for years just want a deeper experience. For example FFVII. It had kiddie graphics and the muturity level was aimed at kids in middle school and up BUT the gameplay was deeper and more sophisticated than what had come before. It was NEW.
So it's just that "cartoony" games are often also "newbie"
games. That's what makes you apathetic.
And what do i want? An M rated fantasy RPG. Yes. I will keep dreaming. thanks.
