SSX Blur didn't exactly receive unanimous approval. Many thought that the Wii controller was going to be a perfect fit for the trick-heavy snowboard series, and while some continued to think that after playing it, other reviewers were nonplussed.
EA Montreal's Eric Chartrand, who recently revealed Nintendo's Mii stinginess, responded to the cumulative critical "meh" his last game received, saying "The reaction to the game was very... how can I say that... interesting." He goes on to talk about wildly varying feelings about the effectiveness of the control scheme. He also suggested that the gaming press were disproportionately negative about the controls, and that the public enjoyed the game more than reviews would indicate.
What did you think about Blur? Did you find it "serviceable and enjoyable at times" or do you agree with Chartrand that it was a "damn fine game"?

i had no problems with the controls once i got up to peak 2 and had some decent stats. of course, i did chage the control settings for the nunchuck steering to joystick exclusive. that helped quite a bit in focusing to learn the rest of the controls.
damn fine game.

It has already been cleared, weeks ago, that Nintendo is allowing third parties to use Miis.
JC, you even wrote the article about it:

I think we should all know by now to not trust critical reviews, especially of Wii games
They gave undeserved bad scores to Sonic, Wii Sports, and SSX, and they should look at the user reviews, not the critics

I agreed that Ubers were hard to do, but.. well.. shouldn't they be? But the controls seemed to work fine for me.

I wouldn't have bought SSX Blur if it costed 20 bucks, gave me 10000 gamerscore and was on the Xbox 360 or PS3.
Truth be told, I'm not interested in any of the current E.A. games (Sans Spore! Damnit it!), be it Skateboarding, Footballing (or sporting, for that matter), Medal of honoring, Need for Speeding....
To be fair, I'm also not interested in Mario Strikers Charged or Pokemon Battle Revolution, both Nintendo games with Nintendo franchises.
The kinds of games that I like are games like Trauma Center (which I have yet to play on the Wii), Red Steel (Give us decent multiplayer, Ubi!), and obviously Zelda/Paper Mario, and Battallion Wars 2, if that gives E.A. a clue on what kinds of games to make.

Most game reviewers see the Wii as a threat, so they dock every Wii game a few points. They fear what they don't understand!

I found the controls way too difficult. And with Tiger Woods and Super-Paper Mario taking up my time, I'm waiting for the first opportunity to trade it in.

I personally loved (and still love and play) SSX Blur. It took around an hour or two to get used to the controls, after which they felt AWESOME - I feel like the reviewers didn't spend enough time getting past the first tough hump, and they just gave up without giving it a chance.
SSX deserved more than it got.

A fine game. Unfortunately, the game doesn't teach you how to play very well, and the manual is only slightly better than useless.
It took me several hours to "get" the controls, but now I'm quite satisfied. After not playing it for a few weeks, I picked it up the other night and was knocking out Ubers with no problem.
My suspicion is that critics don't get to spend much time with games, and don't get (or want) detailed help from the publishers on how to play. Because the Wii controller moves in free 3-D rather than having a few buttons to push and sticks to wiggle, it has a lot more margin for doing things "wrong".

Damn fine game. It took me about 2 hours to get the hang of ubers, but once you do, you can't never go back to bashing buttons. To be honest with you, I get a bigger sense of satisfaction when I hit an icy ramp and pull-out a sick UBER with motion controls. It is one of the most rewarding experiences you get with the Wii / SSX Blur.
I agree that for some, its intimidating to try something new and give it the time it deserves for learning the "curve". Just like anything in life, it takes a while. Just ask my girlfriend (he, he).

the controls were fine, it's a damn fine game in my opinion. granted it took me a while to get used to the über tricks, i was still having fun getting tons of air. eventually i started busting out übers like nothing, so now i love the game even more. i can't necessarily say that i can no longer go back to the classic control set up, but i still like the wii controls better.

i really, really like the way it handles, although some of the uber tricks (like the z-shape) seem overly difficult to execute. i also had trouble getting past the first tournament, but that's because it took me a while to figure out i needed better edging in order to beat the slalom. now that i'm past that hump, i'm excited to keep playing it.

My only complaint with the game was not at all the controls, but the lack of new courses. I thought the semi-greatest hits they used were boring the second time around.
The controls, in my opinion, were brilliant.

I love Nintendo Fanboys... consipiracy theorists..... I think reviewers ar just not as forgiving as fanboys are. i know how much of a problem I've personally had with Different Wii games, control wise.. i don't need the internet to tell me i'm wrong.. I know in Sonic, i had a hard time running backwards, or some jumps wouldn't register and such.. No matter how much a fanboy tells me I'm wrong, i know what I did.
SSX Blur was decent, though i felt it was done with next to no budget. The music was uneventful and boreing, the characters had no personality, no VO work, the announcer sounded bored. SSX was decent... but deffinatly not SSX Tricky.

The critics clearly didn't put enough time into it. Everyone who has played it says it takes a few hours. I can nail ubers at will. I have basically stopped reading wii reviews. Cooking mama is even better than the scores its getting!

I'm a huge fan of the ssx series having played every game related to it that's come out (and incidentally the tony hawk series also), blur is hands down the WORST ssx title I've ever played. The controls bite ass imo and the lack of being able to use a normal (classic) controller with it kills it for me. To someone who never played ssx it might be fun but the difficulty of achieving the exact moves I want to achieve makes it no fun with the wiimote and nunchuck. I'm all for games coming out with full support for wii controls, but they really need to support a normal controller too.

Yea, some of the ubers are tough, but otherwise, this game is great. I could play it non-stop for days.

The controls made SSX Blur awesome. Took some getting used to, but once you did, it was amazing.
The game itself was a step BACK from SSX3 though. I do like it, but it's obvious it didn't receive the attention of 3... better than On Tour though.

To be honest with you,i'm extremely nervous about what is going to happen with the sequel to Blur...because i'm in LOVE with the control scheme, and feel that i've never felt more like I was carving in the snow than I have with this game, and I own most snowboarding games on most systems...this is by far the best, most refreshing and rewarding experience on a board. My ONLY complaint with the game is that the SLALOM events are the devil himself!! They are so hard I found myself beyond frustrated. The gates are just too damn close!! I am trying to unlock peak two right now, and as soon as I beat this SLALOM DEMON I will have peak two unlocked! All I can say is i'm a 26yr old gamer in Los Angeles and I want to do anything and everything I can to BEG EA to ignore the critics (other than ignwii which loved the controls just as much as me) and keep this control scheme and just improve upon it for the next iteration. Thanks EA for an amazing game!!
