MTV's Stephen Totilo got the chance to chat with Nintendo of America writer Erik Peterson, who's had his work cut out for him with the release of Super Paper Mario. While Peterson explains that most of the work was done for him, as the Japanese development team Intelligent Systems crafted most of the wonderful humor found in the game, he still had his fair share of input on the game's humor. A lot of this comes from the fact that Super Paper Mario is the first real Nintendo game that openly acknowledges the player and shatters the fourth wall. Peterson and gang didn't take every opportunity to poke fun, however, as they did leave some Virtual Boy jokes out (the Virtual Boy can be found in Francis' collection, on the shelf in his room. "I feel sour that I didn't think of that," Peterson says.
Is the humor of Super Paper Mario your cup of tea, or is your mustache so thick and bold as to be beyond such petty tomfoolery?

Yeah, the Francis "dating sim" in-joke was brilliant. All the references to older Mario games in his room and stuff... great work. Some of the other humor seems targeted at a lower age bracket, perhaps, but I still enjoy about 80% of the writing. Which is a good thing, since there's so damn much of it...

That part with Francis really was the best. Talk about a geek's paradise. They played on the Geek theme so well, you really know who the target audience of this game is.
I can't wait to get my girlfriend to play this game (I know she can't wait either)... but I have to beat it first.

Who here chose the most hostile responses to Francis's questions for the comedic experience?

Yes it is. I laughed my ass off when I saw it, because a remember a post on kotaku using the same picture for use in a similar, real life incident.

Nintedo's reminicance of older games was cute for the first few games, got a bit boring after a while though. Hopefully now they're poking fun at their past and present selves they wont over-do it.

I loved the section with Francis. Peach had some really good lines in the final dialogue with him. If you're above such petty tomfoolery, get a sense of humor. Seriously, the kind of person that's "above this" is not the type of person I would think would be playing this game.
