In a friendly reminder of how to steer clear of prison, Nintendo issued a warning to everyone in the UK, via it's Nintendo of Europe website, concerning their latest console and illegal mod chips. Apparently, they aren't suited for one another and unless you're the kind of person who enjoys living in small spaces, along with a regimented day, then you might want to avoid that option. We'd have to agree with just about the whole warning; the Wii console is already plagued with too much piracy as it is, at home and abroad.

So much for the capitalistic U.S. I think this is bull crap. After I purchase a device, I believe that I should be able to modify it as I please.
How about a petition?

nintendo needs to learn that europe wants the games america gets quicker, if that happened then possibly there wouldn't be so many mod chips.

My motivation for supporting mod-chips is homebrew, i don't pirate, but i the ability to run homebrew software like media players etc on my console.

Fuck you, Nintendo Europe. If you didn't constantly fuck us over with console and game releases, then region code every console you can to block us from attempting to by-pass your middle finger and the unbearable wait and cost of your exploitation at your fanbase we wouldn't be turning to piracy and modchips to get around limmitations of the console THAT SHOULDN'T BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I agree with sphetr2 and (somewhat less emphatically) ssuk. I think it is ridiculous. If piracy is involved, it is understandable, but your average rank and file UK citizen or American would just like to play games they can't get elsewhere or watch DVDs on their Wii. I sympathize with my Wii loving UK brethren. They get hosed, and we've been getting hosed with certain releases they've gotten lately. What freakin' gives?!

I don't think that they (Nintendo) are right about modchips themselves being illegal -- pirating games (which modchips can facilitate) is, but at least in the US as long as there are "substantial non-infringing use[s]" they should be OK. Especially in the UK, where I don't think that playing a game not region-coded for your region is an "infringement", this should be OK. I think the blame falls on Nintendo -- had they made the Wii region-free like the DS, pirates would have one less excuse for modding consoles.

This article wasn't nearly as interesting as Joystiq's one, what gives?

If NoE give us Games like Paper Mario and Trauma Center, than I didn't need a mod chip. But as long as the PAL region didn't get any support and the most good games appear a year later, then you have no other choice. I want to play games when every one on the world plays them.

Even with delivery and customs tax, buying a new game from America is cheaper than buying it here. Nintendo don't have a logical leg to stand on apart from the want for more money, but they're perfectly profitable and they shouldn't be able to artificially maintain a price about the world market level.
