Looking for a way to waste time with the Virtual Console? Well, if you do this right, you won't be wasting much time at all. This Super Mario Bros. speedrun performed by Andrew Gardikis takes only five minutes. In comparison, the Super Mario Brothers movie is 20.8 times longer. The coolest thing about this speedrun is that it makes use of Mario glitches inherent in the game, but seems to be done without save state assistance. That means that it's theoretically possible to replicate it on your Wii or your NES. Oh, but only if you're awesome. And just to rub it in a little, only Andrew Gardikis has proven to be this awesome. Sorry, everyone else, including ourselves!

this was clearly accomplished through emulation and the use of instant "save-states"

Unfortunately, i also call a question on this one.
There where numerous examples where he was almost CERTAINLY hit by a mob - i would assume some sort of invulnerability cheat.
Excellent skill, no less - but the high likelyhood of cheating takes the edge off.

How did he glitch the pipe in 4-2 without going through the wall?

I want to know what it is about Pizza Rolls and Bagel Bites that makes third degree burns an acceptable risk. I guess they're just that damn good.

Although it is obvious this guy knows his Mario, he had to have used some sort of cheat as there were quite a few times that he should have died yet didn't. Still even with cheats it is quite a feat!

Please, this isn't the only guy who's done this. I've forgotten the names, but about two or three others have accomplished this feat.
And also, no cheats were involved in some of these performances. (I don't know about this one.) Many of the things you are all calling "cheats" are actually well-documented glitches. Check this out: http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/smb_bugs.shtml

wow, i can't believe i am about to say this but, i wish that joystiq, etc. would have a wii/ps3/etc. portal that would have bespoke formating and movies that you could see as well as hear. :)

Well, the only thing I liked about the Mario Bros. movie was the second name scene. I laughed with it.
About the video, very well done, but it could be done 2 or 3 seconds faster.

speeddemosarchive.com has a pretty good reputation of having non-sped up speed runs.
As for the legitimacy of this run, I can say for myself that everything he does is possible, as I've done most of them, but not all in one sitting. All of the times he should have died but didn't is a legit part of the game. The only thing I'm iffy about is the luck he gets at the end with Bowser. I'm not sure if the game always pauses his hammers at that moment, or if he was just plain lucky with this run. I'm not saying he is not using an emulator because he really is based on the fact that you can see where the screen usually crops the image.

Wait, how did he get to the warp zone in world 4-2 by going down a pipe? I thought you needed to reveal a staircase of invisible blocks to create a vine (he passes the area when there's 382 left on the clock), and then climb up to the warp zone.

everything that happens here is very much possible. incredibly difficult to string together in one run, but very much possible.

I've tried for years to get under 5 mins. It's just impossible, at least for me. =( Damn you, Andrew Gardikis!

There are so many flaws in this video, I don't even know where to begin. There's two instances where he goes down pipes that don't take you to locations it took him. The pipe in 4-2 does not take you to the warp zone, you need to climb a vine to get there. The 2nd pipe he went down in 8-4 does not take you underwater, the next one across the lava does.
Also, it is impossible to jump the first lava pit with the platform on 8-4. Also, I've never tried, but I doubt you can jump over some of those pirahna plants. Also, how the hell did he jump to the 1st pipe in 8-4 without hitting the hidden block?

Andrew, in response to some of your objections. The way the game works, it can only have one warp sort of thing at one time, if the game still thinks it's at the part with the vine, then going down the pipe would take you to the Warp zone. Ditto for the pipe that takes you underwater. He went far enough to where the game loaded the data for the underwater place. As for getting up to the pipe, you must not play this game much because my feet catch in stuff all the time, it's just a question of timing it so you can jump.
