Aeropause's Stephen Munn, reacting to a recent Everybody Votes Channel question about how people preferred to buy music, suspects that the Everybody Votes Channel may not be just about harmless fun.He believes that this question is aimed at gauging interest in a future music download channel, implying that the Everybody Votes Channel has always been an attempt to get marketing data from Wii users and pretend it's a game. We're going to have to add this plausible theory to our our own list of Everybody Votes conspiracy theories.
What do you think? If this is true, are you outraged? Or does the intent of the service not matter as long as you're having a good time?

To this day, I still use the EVC on a weekly basis. We vote, we joke, we sometimes even BET on which one will win.
I dont mind at all, I just wish they posted my question on "Fav Mario Bro, Mario Mairo or Luigi Mario"....

I think the voting channel is a great way to gather useful information and opinions from users. Polls can then be referred to in articles or reports: "60% Of Wii users voted on so-and-so.."

Quite frankly, I'm disappointed in how little they are using it as one. They should add a gaming section(screw the casuals, I would use it much more) and ask US what we want. Why not add polls for Brawl characters? What about preferred worlds in Galaxy? What kind of online system we would rather have? There is so much more they can ask us and, in the end, we will benefit from it(not that they won't).
They really should start using it as one, at least a section of it.

I'm as cynical about the business world as anybody... but at its best, market research is about figuring out what people actually want. I'm not ashamed to be 'used' for market research by answering a simple survey question.
Maybe one day they'll ask us what kind of game genre we'd like to see the Wii library expand into, or what franchise could use a sequel, or what classic game would play well into the Wii-mote. I kind of hope they use our opinions more.

I also think it is also a great way to gather information. And if the questions haven't already been geared towards future wii channels they should really do that. Oh yeah speaking of Wii channels has anyone else heard of the Mii Popularity Channel?

Duh! It's totally marketing! The only Nintendo drawback is the marketing results are shared freely.

If I knew that they were using it for marketing purposes I might actually be interested. As it is, I ended up voting for the first two weeks or so and then the novelty wore off. Eventually I deleted it from my Wii - not because I need the space, but because I actually hope they keep track of people who left the EVC and realize that it's silly in its current incarnation.
If they change the questions to ones like those above (Which of these should be in SSB:B? or Would you rather the next Zelda had the style of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess?), I will sign back in a minute and start voting in every poll.

I think Nintendo should use it in upcomming games via storing the knowledge to your Mii. Say for example animal crossing or a Mii based game that could incorprate this info. Think of it like the movie "The Game," where this company gave him a MMPI-2 Test, then knew exactly what he would do before he did it. Think of Eternal Darkness where the game actually kind of knows you.

Not using the EVC for marketing is like not using the Internet for info. It has other uses besides porn.

Like others have already said, I would be more interested if they actually did use this for market research. The way market research is done these days sucks, and it would be nice to actually get a bit of fun out of it.
In fact, if they decided to throw in a few Wii Points as payment, you'd expect to see a rapid increase in users. A lot of people would happily answer hundreds of marketing questions if it meant getting a retro game in exchange.

Oh noes! Nintendo is actively asking my opinion about what I would be willing to buy? Gasp shock and horror! How can I live with myself being used that way.
Next you'll tell me that people may actually ask me about what I'm interested in when they're thinking about buying me birthday presents too?
I ask you, where will the insanity stop?

I have nowhere else to post this, and i want people to know about this idea and get it out there somehow.
I think the Wii should stop with the lame movements and make a classic, yet good game. I'm talking about a shooter. My idea was to use two wiimotes for this shooter game...use them to plug in two nunchucks. No aiming with a pointer, good old fashioned dual analog. right z for firing, right c for reload, left z for grenade, left c for action. for you motion sensitive junkies have the right nunchuck jerked forward/downish for melee, left nunchuck forward/upish for jump.
tell me what you think, pass the idea along, post some changes to the idea, give me information on getting indie developing kits? (seriously, where the HELL are these indie developers we were told about!?! i'd like to be one of them!)

Aww, I thought you were referring to the good kind of shooter.
Anyway, I'm not sure it's a good idea to release a game that requires two extra controllers to play. Why would you want that on the Wii and not, say, one of the systems with a default dual-analog controller? Not trolling, btw, just asking for the sake of discussion.

Just cause...i just think that the fact that nintendo claims that they support indie developing through low cost. Plus it would be really comfortable to have what would originally be one gamepad as two separate pieces.
besides, it is bringing the regular shooter type into the wii, becomes sometimes you can only take so much of the motion sensitive controls. i like to sit back and chill sometimes.

That makes a lot of sense. Though I'm not too concerned. Who cares if it's marketing research? We're consumers and its a way of having our voices heard through Nintendo.

I, as well, always suspected Nintendo would eventually be using the voting channel for market research. It just makes sense. And I don't know why anyone would complain about this. Don't you want Nintendo to make games and channels that we actually want? Would you rather them find out by sending annoying questionnaires in the mail or even clog up your e-mail inbox with them? This way at least you have a choice whether you want to fire up the voting channel and give your opinion.

Marketing research or not I'm hooked on the the voting channel. Voting the polls is entertaining but the real potential, I think, is that it represents a means for Wii owners to get Nintendos ear. They control which polls are chosen for voting but we can submit any question we want...
I have been submitting the the following type of questions to the channel since day one:
Do you think V.C. Games are overpriced? (Yes or No)
Do you think V.C. Games perceived value justifies current pricing? (Yes or No)
How much should a NES game for the V.C. cost?
(200 points or 300 points)
Should V.C. game pricing be reduced by? (25% or 50%)
Does Wii need an XBOX Live style online service?
(Yes or No ) etc...
Somebody has to be reading the submitted questions, if they receive enough complaints about pricing and online play in the form of questions like these maybe we will see some changes.

I never had any doubt that Nintendo was using the EVC as Market Research. I wish they would tackle some 'harder' questions...and not just so fluffy ones.
BUT - I do think that they can also see what and when we are playing...and that alone is worth way more than the questions that they are asking on the EVC. Think about it...the system tracks your playtime...so it is not much of a stretch to think that Nintendo is already 'watching' us and out play habits.
I hope that they DO use this to guage what kind of reaction that new Intellectual Properties will receive.
I for one really like to take surveys...I like to vote...I like for MY voice to be heard.

There's no way of actually knowing if the votes are being used this way, no matter what people may speculate.
That said, the Everybody Votes Channel was fun at first, but I haven't used it for weeks/months. It just became boring, and the questions got really stupid and pointless. In fact, I don't think I've turned on my Wii since then...DS is the far better system at this stage.

Does anyone here actually know anything about market research?
If you have, you'd know the EV channel is a god-awful tool for market research. One question per 24 hours, with a constantly-shifting sample pool and an inability to control sample demographics--if I'd had to work with that, I'd say no thanks and call 100 people from the phonebook.

Surely, EVC is there to spread democracy through the world especially Nintendo's large neighbour China??!!
Of course democracy increases prosperity and leads to more nintendo product being sold - nint ain't stupid...nint ain't stupid, man.
I'm going to be the first to declare the main cause of the future democracisation of China is due to the EVC.
Now where's my meds?

Oh yes, there aren't enough of those on other platforms. Listen to this poster, Nintendo! The world has grown tired of Mario game after Mario game. We want something new. We want something exciting. We want something different. We want FPS after FPS.
Yay.

I posted the "which came first, chicken or egg" question.. they put it up within a week. I don't doubt that nintendo uses the voting channel for their own gain but not all the questions are from the big N. And seriously, if people vote for a music channel wouldn't they be kinda dumb not to implement one?
