With it's release on Friday, many gamers looked to Spider-Man 3 for some wall-clinging action. But, for those of you still on the fence, is the game worth coming down for? Well, the critics might not help you much, considering that they're scoring the game extremely on both sides of the spectrum.
Regardless, let's see what they said:
- GamingTrend (83/100) says the developers succeeded in maximizing controls for the Wii version: "Vicarious Visions has worked very hard on this title to ensure that it utilizes the unique control scheme of the Wii in the best way possible, and they have succeeded. The city is bigger and the storyline is expanded to take advantage of that."
- Game Chronicles (83/100) thinks the black suit works best in the Wii version of the game: "A very cool Wii-exclusive gameplay features is the enhanced integration of the black suit. It was more of a visual concept on the PS3 and 360, but in this game it really becomes part of the strategy."
- GameZone (80/100) scores the game well, even though they think the combat still sucks: "Slinging webs is an accelerated, exhilaration-pushing experience that offsets the return of an old and repetitive combat engine. Wii players have the benefit of using their remotes to attack, which sharply cuts the repetition tied to pressing one button thirty million times."
- IGN (57/100) finds a lot of faults in the game: "The sub-par visual presentation really hurts; the Wii version chugs with an inconsistent framerate despite lots of city pop- up and the fact that many 3D structures lack textures completely when viewed at a distance. The battle system, in spite of some gameplay- enhancing upgrades, feels clunky and unrefined. And many of the story arcs, while original, are neither very interesting nor very well executed."
- Games Radar (40/100) found the game to be almost unplayable: "It's so dumbed down that it might actually be more appropriate for children if it weren't for the T rating on the package. Just play the 360 version. Actually, scratch that, just go play Spider-Man 2 instead. It's worlds better than this. There are actually parts of this that look like they're right out of the original PlayStation game from 2000."

Within 2 hours of buying this, I hastily bundled the game back into the box, washed my hands thoroughly, and headed back to Blockbuster to exchange this 'game' for shop credit. I walked away with Final Fantasy III and Phoenix Wright: Justice For All. That's as much proof of karma as I'll ever need.

I rented both the Wii version and the 360 Version.. and the Wii version feels like it's incomplete. Bug after bug after glitch. The graphics were decent... actually, i didn't really find fault with them too much. The animations were terrible, some control choices were cumbersom, and poorly executed. The webslinging was cool-ish.. though i found it very hard to control when just wanting to go forward. My friend and I joked about how I looked like a drunk spiderman.
When I went over to the 360 version, i found the game to be much more playable. With an enhanced fighting system, better control of the character. (Like... uhm, If i'm climing a wall and jump, at the apex of the jum, he reattaches to the wall.. in the Wii version he dosen't without a button press)
Neither game was particularly GOOD...... but i'd give the Wii version a 6 and the 360 version a 7.

I Think they must have rushed production to coincide with the movie release. It has a lot of good ideas but they seem unfinished. The graphics are awful the play is choppy although it does improve with upgrades. Unless your a hardcore spidey fan like myself youll only want to pick this up for a rental if only to websling with the wii remote. Hardcore fans pick it up despite its flaws its fun and its spidey.

If I had a 360, I'd get the 360 version. But there's a reason I bought a $250 console instead of a $400 console, and I'd like a review that looks only at the Wii version without trying to compare it to every other version under the sun.

I actually bought the Wii version. I had watched the Spidey 2 on the Xbox but never really played it. At first, the controls were hard for me. I got a little frustrated and thought about trading it online right away. But I love Spider-man so had to give it a chance. I've now put about 3 hours into it now and have got the hang of swinging and fighting a lot better. I am really starting to enjoy it. I can bounce around 5 or 6 guys and not get touched doing all sorts of sweet moves. (Yes, I'm playing on sidekick level) My brother, who played SM2 a lot and loved it, played it too. He got the hang of swinging pretty quickly but overall liked many of the changes to SM3 that weren't in SM2.
The detail of the graphics does leave a lot to be desired after seeing SM2 and I frequently run into a strange bug where Spidey seems to vibrate and can't move at the top of a building or the corner of a room. Jumping gets you out of this but it is pretty annoying at times. Also, I still have trouble with climbing walls quickly (using your web) and the camera angles screwing things up sometimes...but this is probably just me.
Although I'm only about 26% thru it, the story is ok, the cut scenes are ok, but the action is routine. It's like a do the same fight over and over with 4-5 baddies. It could use some more super villain fights or more ways to beat down the easy guys...like using the terrain as weapons.
Overall though, I'm having fun with it. Don't know if I'll play it to the end, but it will definitely keep me occupied for a few weeks. I'd give it a 7/10.
