Here's a little pre-Monday Virtual Console Madness, courtesy of Hudson. Get your Wii Points ready, because our personal favorite shmup ever is going to be available for download next week in the US.
Blazing Lazers (Gunhed in Japan) is a vertical shooter for the Turbografx-16 that differs from other vertical shooters in one important way: really fun weapons. There are four categories of weapons, each of which can be upgraded to five different levels. Our favorite is the enemy-seeking green lightning beam thing. It's pretty.

I've always had a problem with shoot 'em ups, well besides their new nickname of shmups. They're usually too hard for me. At least let me keep my powerups so I don't get creamed. And I keep crashing into the walls. Not to say I didn't enjoy a short time with Radiant Silvergun, just that I wouldn't have gotten frustrated as easily and would buy these types of games.

Yay
the first significant game of the 4th generation!
its launch game, if you will, forerunner to all 16-bit console glory that would follow

It's almost as if those shoot 'em ups were only 1-player games. Nah can't be. And Bomberman '93 has 5-player support.

#3 - You've never owned a Turbo Graphix 16 before have you? The TG16 only has one controller port. Yes, you read that right, there is no two player on a TG16. You had to actually go out and buy a multi-tap to play games that had two player support. That's why so many games only have one player on them.
P.S. Blazing Lazers = best reason to own a TG16
