The April NPD numbers, tracking hardware and software sales in North America, were released recently and Nintendo once again obliterated the competition. The Nintendo DS and the Wii took the top two spots for the fourth month running, with 471,000 and 360,000 units sold, respectively. Both of these figures more than double their nearest competitors (PSP and the Xbox 360), and the PS3 could only move a paltry 82,000 units.
It's the same story in software. Nintendo took home the top four spots across all systems with the releases of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and Super Paper Mario, along with the still oddly popular Wii Play. The Pokemon titles, of course, were only available for a single week in April, yet still captured the top spots with a combined 1.7 million units sold.
It just makes you all tingly inside, doesn't it? For the full hardware and software figures, click after the break.

And think... none of the really big franchise games have even gotten release dates yet. Imagine Wii sales once Metroid, Mario, and Smash Bros. hit... and then what? Animal Crossing? Mario Kart? Soul Calibur? Resident Evil? Another Zelda?

I just wish Nintendo would get off their hind ends and release Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn here. I mean, since the Japanese have already been enjoying it for month and there's not so much as a peep about it on nintendo.com.

Not only is Nintendo kicking butt, the PS3 can't even muster up enough sales to beat the GBA. Sony might be in some trouble. I think in the end they will do fine, but right now GO NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!!

1. Who the hell is still buying GameCubes, when you can get all that (now that the servers for PSO are finally down, and so much more for only $150 more...?
2. I too await Goddess of the Dawn, but something tells me it'll be a helluva wait. Fire Emblem is still very much a Japanese franchise, and must be localization hell
3. Take the difference between DS and Wii sales, and subtract 30k, that's PS3 sales, and that just stings
we should feel sorry for the Sony fans, i mean that's where we were 2 years ago

The reason WiiPlay is selling is that it's bundled with a Wii Remote. So it's really just a $10 game.

The Wii Play is still a cheap way to buy an extra wiimote, so sales of it should track new console sales reasonably closely for quite a while.

The ps3 will pick up. eventually. and in the meantime sony can lean back and enjoy the ps2 sales which is still very good. you want to compare cats and dogs..? how's the gamecube sales compared to the ps2?
im getting bored with the "war".. all consoles have their strengths and weaknesses. i were never going to buy a console but now i have bought a wii and ds recently as they are cheap and there's some amazing games for them. this fall i will buy a ps3 to play gtaiv and little big planet. i just might buy a 360 too just to be fair.. and screw with your war statistics.

Oh, domination in America now?? Awesome! We'll see if they can hold up for next month. I have no idea why so many people are buying a Wii. There's nothing out for it...

I really wonder if the GameCube can end 2nd in the last-gen war, considering you can't see X-Box anywhere in charts, but you can see many Cubes.
