Ulitmately, I don't think this can be decided on name alone. This depends on how much of their arsenal each of them has. If you want to go by smash bros melee style, I'd have to say Link wins. He's got the widest range of different types of attacks, with a lot of power behind each of them, and it's despite not being a heavy weight, he is hard as hell to knock out of the arena.

Okay, first, I am going to give the most unbiased response possible and not play favorites. To be honest, the Zelda and Metroid games are my two favorite game franchises, but the Zelda games probably are the best in my humble opinion.

Now, for the answer (strictly outside Smash Bros terms, just in logic). It's clearly Samus. As sweet as Link is, what's gonna win, a missile launching arm cannon or a bow and arrow? The arrows probably wouldn't even pierce Samus's armor. And what's Link have for protection? A lousy (yet stylish) tunic. MAYBE his bombs might do something... but good luck with that. Naw, Samus would own Link, no doubt...

Zero Suit Samus... now that might be a different story...

This is indeed a question of the ages.

Logically Samus would win with her WMD's.
With Links heart, and determination he is the man. And he has a bunch of fearies, slingshots, a bag of bombs, wallet, ocarina, he has controlled time, a boat that can transport and talk, heroes sword, and an amazing fashion sense.

So therefore; Samus has to go.
But not before we play Metroid 3!

I must respectfully disagree with my comrades who claim that Samus would win this match. My reason? Magic.

In DC comics, Superman is impervious to harm, save two things; kryptonite or magic. Supe's allergy to Kryptonite is based on scientific ideas; radioactive material from his homeworld would, no doubt, render him weak and ill. But, in a number of instances, he encounters villains and even allies who are able to use magic to harm him. Even Wonder Woman's battle sword, endowed with spells and magically sharpened, can slice Superman's flesh like a hot knife through butter!

Hence, I believe that a battle between Samus (who IS awesome!) and Link (again, AWESOME!) would be won out by Link, whose Master Sword could repel any blast Samus might fire, reflecting it back at her!

Magic > Science, Link FTW

It's like asking Batman vs. Superman. Obviously, Superman (Samus) has more sheer power, but Batman (Link) is just so damn cool.

Link. He's got a lot more agility, and if we're taking everything they've got from games, then Link has a freaking ton of weapons he can use. Bomb arrows and the clawshot in specific would totally rock Samus. Plus, whenever Samus morph balls, Link can just turn into a wolf and pick her up like a tennis ball, and then drop her off a cliff. Or take her into the twilit, where she'd turn spirit form.

If we're talking SSBM, then it's a very tough call. Link and Samus are basically clones of each other. I think the only advantage Link has over Samus is that he can throw his bombs, while Samus can only drop hers. So I'd have to go with Link there too.

If you don't believe that they're clones, take a look at their moves.
Charge B = Charged Projectile
Over B = Alternate Projectile
Down B = Bomb
Up B = Special attack that does continuos damage
Grab = Long range chain/grapple beam

Okay, I left out magic factor, but I have my doubts that the Master Sword would deflect Samus's blasts. Why? The Master Sword has the power to repel EVIL. Samus definitely is not an evil woman, considering she's saved multiple worlds from certain destruction and is constantly foiling the Space Pirates' horrible plans... the reasons the Master Sword reflects Ganondorf's blasts of energy is that they're... well, evil. Okay, Link has the fairies to back him up... he doesn't carry more than four bottles, so they would only bring him back so many times. It definitely would be quite a battle, but Link just doesn't have any amazing magic attacks... plus his magic usage is limited (hence the "meter"), so he'd quickly run out of it... oh, I also forgot about the ball and chain, that definitely could leave a mark right through Samus's armor, but that thing is as slow as heck, she could dodge it no prob. Don't get me wrong, I definitely like Link slightly more than Samus, but remember, his magic is mostly to counteract evil.

Ultimately, when you think about it, it is hard to use logic here, since they both are destined heroes and by legend (in Zelda) or prophecy (in Metroid) are not supposed to be defeated... :)

I'll repeat myself in stating that Link doesn't have infinite magic. His magic will run out and he'll be vulnerable. Plus, how does Link plan to hurt Samus under her armor? Most of his weapons powerful enough are not that fast... if you haven't realized, Samus is much more agile than Link, at least outside of Smash Bros.

I vote for Samus due to her varied arsenal, suits, and training. Link, does have a few things in his favour however. The ability to slow down time using the ocarina would give him an advantage, allowing him to compete with Samus' superior reaction time. Items like Pegasus boots, Roc's cape, Bunny hood, the different tunics, plus the magic armor from the Wind Waker would make him harder to take down. As for his limited amount of magic, he can drink a bottle of Chateau Romani and he has an unlimited amount of magic for three days and three nights. He also has different animal allies like Epona, Moosh, Ricky, and Dimitri that can be called with an instrument vs Samus' one ship. And if things get really bad, he can use the Giant's Mask or the Fierce Deity Mask to pull him out of jam.

Smash Bros is used to even the playing field and I think that's what we should base our judgement on.

So I'll have a clearer answer to this question after Brawl comes out ;)

when links magic runs out of magic he could put on the super armor(i forget its real name) from twilight princess. that also makes him invincible. he can use the ocarina to slow down time, then bash her face in with the ball + chain or the hammer. he could also use the ice arrows to freeze her which would stop her from moving and make her armor easier to break

um.... I personally beleive that link would win: if he ever makes a major mistake, he can always play the song of time and restart the battle when ever he feels like. Samus can't do that, so no matter how hard she tries, she just won't be able to win. Oh and if you take into account WW's arrow system, as long as someone is attacking link, they are considered evil to some degree, so the one shot kill Light Arrows would work just fine :)

But I wish that this debate had never happened.

At first I was going to say Samus cause she seems more powerful and all that, but then I realized that really, it comes down to two forces. Technology or magic. And when I look at it that way, it seems like magic would overcome technology - so I'd have to say Link.

You really can't judge by Smash Bros capabilities, because that is dependant solely on the player. Samus and Link are both high tier characters in Melee, and I for one have seen my share of @ss kicking from both of them.
Now then, as for my vote....I love both franchises, but I have to say Link. Why? Cuz I like swords. :)

Depends. Put Link in outer space fighting Space Pirates, he'd get pwned. Put Samus in Hyrule fighting Ganondorf, she'd get pwned. They would never fight each other so I'm going to say they leave together.

Ironically, I am a die hard Zelda fan. Even with that, unless link has the Fierce Deity Mask and that infinite magic potion, along with the magic armor and Naru's love, he would probably be vaporized by a nice steaming hot blast from the plasma beam. I don't think the master sword can survive searing plasma.

Now if it were link vs. Dark Samus or Samus with the Dark Beam on the other hand.....Link, hands down.

Now a real question would be Samus or Megaman? That is a little harder to separate by logic.

Yeah.... Samus owns everyone and considering metroid is the coolest series in the history of video games (Note I said coolest and not best) I would say that samus wins just because she is soooo much cooler than link and I like metroid tons more than any other series.

You guys know that in smash bros. Link is middle tier, while samus is high tier. Samus is faster, has longer range, a KO projectile, and one of the best recoveries in the game. Link is slower, and may have more close range power, but samus will win.

I'm going to judge who wins on their last released console game as there is no mention of a 'fight' in the post.

Before Twilight Princess came out I would have easily typed Link without thinking about it. But being that TTWP was a big disappointment to me (I found it really really easy- I just strolled right through the game without even giving a damn about the characters).

Samus walks out even though I never finished Echo's I continually return to it (and start again since I have no idea where I am and each objective is completely random when taken out of context) I actually enjoy the game.

Samus is a bounty hunter with an upgradable powersuit...

Hmm, if they fought on some alien planet, Link technically could asphyxiate due to lack of oxygen. However, link spellunks in cavernous volcanoes, (which also expel toxic fumes) and he is generally unaffected. This could be yet another physiological difference between humans (homo sapien sapiens) and Hylians (unknown). Hylians may lack vocal chords (see: Link grunts) because evolution replaced them with some sort of filter gland, so they could survive the harsh volcanic terrain of early Hyrule. So as long as the flora and fauna of said planet resembled that of Hyrule (eg. having a protosynthetic process which also produces gems, ballistics, and general anesthetics) then Link could win.

if you get all of links weapons including the ones from ocarina of time, he will totally dominate.

he has nayrus love which means he cant die and he has dins fire which has alot of range.

he also has his bomb arrows that would penatrate through samus's shield. he has his bomb with chain,double claw shot, all sorts of diferent masks.

overall character to character items to items through history. Hands down Link

You're pitting a hero outfitted with medieval weapons against a bounty hunter from the far future carrying high powered laser weapons and rocket propelled explosives. It would be a massacre.

I set up a few battles (on Melee) between Smaus(9) and (adult) Link(9). No items, therefore no random advantage. 5 lives each.
1.Final destination- Link wins
2.poke floats- Samus wins
3.Temple- Link wins (barely)
4.Brinstar Depths- Link wins (barely)
So, Link wins over all 3 to 1. It seems Link can just do damage faster so when they both start at 0% link almost always wins.

One more, for luck. 2 Samuses versus young and old Link (all level 9s), on Final Destination, same rules as before.
Each Samus get's KOd before either Link, despite each Link being on higher damage.
Now, each Samus has 3 lives and each link only has 2.
Adult Link's first to run out of lives.
Samuses win (one with 2 lives the other with 1).
It seems samus works better in teams.

This is the most rediculous thing i have ever heard. It is like every person on here has played every Zelda but hasnt finished Metroid Prime 2. It's simple, Link would enter the scene, Samus would charge up the Darkburst attack, and the resulting black hole would suck Link into his oblivion. Nothing could save him.

Yeah, if you're giving Link EVERY WEAPON he's ever had, you have to give Samus EVERY WEAPON she's ever had, meaning her most powerful weapons from each game, meaning you most likely have to play through the game. Still, the Giant's mask? Samus has taken down much larger foes. (See that giant mechanical spider in MP2:E, been so long the name escapes me.) And Fierce Deity's mask... well, he can shoot fireballs and look sweet. I'll be fair, Link does have bomb arrows (logically, light arrows shouldn't pierce her armor), and can slow down time, Chateau Romani for temporary infinite magic, magic armor for temporary infinite health... does health and magic really matter when he's being sucked into a black hole? Foetoid has a really nice point there.

Also, don't forget, location does matter... Hyrule, Link may have the advantage, not only knowing the terrain, but having the blessing of the three goddesses... take him to a different planet with different physics... let's just say I think Samus is more used to adapting to new environments. And, um, as for not needing to breathe or something... in the volcano, it's the fire tunic that allows him to breathe. Let's see it do something on Tallon VI or Brinstar... it's basically Link's Varia Suit, nothing more.
