Last month, the rumor gained some steam, and now Level Up's N'Gai Croal says it's official: Nintendo will launch WiiWare, a new service for original downloadable Wii games. Like the Virtual Console, WiiWare will be part of the Wii Shop channel and will be available for (unknown amounts of) Wii points. Croal can also confirm that it's not just the big names coming out with content for WiiWare -- indie developers are more than welcome. Of course, with all good news, there's also bound to be a little bad news ... and here it's that WiiWare probably won't be available until 2008. Still, it sounds like it could be worth the wait.

It won't be an entirely new service. The game'll be where the Opera channel is, and where the EV channel was as well.

I was all ready to run screaming into the streets, "WiiWare is coming!" until I read that last paragraph. I'm sad now.

Didn't we all know they were doing this before the wii was even released?

What I'm wondering about is if this will include more than just games. If I ever see Joost or Netflix "Watch it Now" in the Wii shop I may just do a jig right there in front of my TV.
This also raises questions about storage space. If any decent sized games show up in here we're going to need more than 512 megs to play them.

That's what USB external harddrive support is for. Hopefully Nintendo will make that official soon, too.

Why won't it come out before 2008? It's nothing new in terms of technology, they could go live with that next month. Sometimes I feel that Nintendo is taking everything way too easy and milking their loyal customers beyond fairness..

I would love to see netflix watch it now support on the wii, but I'm not getting my hopes up. The Opera browser even craps out while trying to listen to a podcast in a flash based player. How great would a netflix channel be though? I think that's what they really need to do, is start letting 3rd parties (especially indie developers) develop channels.

But will they offer any online support (or at least some sort of leaderboards-type stuff)?

Try tomorrow. There's a big story on Digg about it. Directly from Newsweek. Way to go, slowpokes. http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2007/06/26/level-up-exclusive-on-nintendo-wiiware.aspx

#11: There's a difference between "officially announce" and "will be available".
Way to read, slowpoke.
