According to the fine folks over at Game | Life, next week's E3 is going to be disappointing to fans of those brothers who make with the super smashing. Why? No playable version of the game will be available at the show. And, as much as we'd like to, we'll refrain from quoting that line about voices crying out and being suddenly silenced.
The Nintendo representative that confirmed all of this to Game | Life said that due to the nature of the new E3, Nintendo decided to go with a smaller roster of games. With several new titles that we've never seen before likely to pop up at the show, Nintendo undoubtedly wants to keep the focus on them. Can't blame them, but with Smash Bros. being the high-profile title it is, we can't say we would've made the same decision.

That way, everyone's a n00b once Smash Bros Brawl goes up for sale. :P
And they give other titles a chance to shine too.
I expect an announcement regarding SSBB anyhow, either release date (make it this year!), online stuff, or something.

The only reason why I would want to see/hear about anyone playing the game is to know about how all the control schemes differ from one another. Otherwise, since I'm not going to E3, I don't really care.
Besides, I want to see more characters and such. Gameplay footage will suffice, if needed.

My guess is they just won't have the time
Nintendo's got a lot on their collective plate right now, and it'll certainly be an interesting E3
(i'm still astounded by how many people got it so ingrained into their heads that MP3 would be online, especially given the fact that Retro Studios NEVER said the game would be that way)

Sounds like they don't want to dull out the other games there, which is fair enough, Brawl would knock everything else to pieces.

Its very possible they might be holding back some stuff for the Space Expo, it hasn't been anounced yet so who knows... or it may be that they haven't fully signed on all the new Sega characters that will be in the game.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it playable at E for All.
Nintendo can't pass up that chance to add a larger potential playerbase for the game.
