Or maybe not. We're not insinuating anything here, because we love you no matter what. You know what else we love? That's right: Wii Fit.
While it's funny to quip that this is a perfect game for moms across America, we recommend that everyone take a closer look at the versatility of Wii Fit. How many of you own a treadmill or other exercise machine? Those things take up space. Maybe you'd like to own something like that, but you live in an apartment, like many Americans, particularly those under thirty who maybe haven't bought a house yet. Then space becomes a real issue, as this blogger well knows from years of apartment-living. But with Wii Fit and the balance board peripheral, suddenly working out with gear can take a lot less space -- and you get the added benefit of monitored results, which we always thought was an excellent feature.
Working out with the Wii has already become a popular hobby for many gamers -- the addition of this software just makes it that much easier. Maybe some gamers would have liked to have seen less focus on the title during Nintendo's keynote, but this kind of thing is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Nintendo's winning strategy, and we all better get used to it. The Wii is to Americans what the DS is to the Japanese, it seems; it's an all-in-one device that can fit anyone's needs, and Wii Fit is a strong part of that.
After all, as gamers age, it's easier for them to handle the Wii than the DS. We've heard that very notion from our own mother unit, who loves the idea of the DS, but prefers the freedom of gaming without squinting at a tiny screen. For many who are just getting into gaming -- or who are returning after a long hiatus -- it's a lot easier, and more familiar, to pick up a remote than it is to get into the idea of a handheld gaming system. The DS is still a gaming system, rather than an extension of the television (like a DVD player), and the concept can be a lot for a nongamer to wrap their nongaming minds around at times, unless, perhaps, they've been using a palm PC of some sort. But the Wii, as the mainstream media continues to crow, is easy for just about anyone -- which makes Wii Fit a frankly brilliant idea, and the execution is beautiful as well. So while in Japan, where everyone (and maybe their pets) owns a DS, and "games" like the yoga, gardening, and walking trainers will probably outsell any other random actual game, in America, the Wii will take on that role, and Wii Fit is versatile enough to handle a lot of different things.
So just what does Wii Fit do? Better to ask what it doesn't do. The title is set to include more than forty different activities, from aerobics to yoga poses to muscle conditioning, and it will even measure your BMI. Plus, as can be seen in the trailer, there are a number of other fun minigames -- yes, we know, minigames on the Wii! -- that also serve to improve balance and coordination. That's crafty right there ... hiding conditioning inside a fun activity. Of course, there's also a Fitness Age, which was to be expected, since we know our Wii Sports Age and our Brain Age already.
Frankly, we welcome our new fitness-monitoring overlords, and we're celebrating them with all this hot new media. But here's the bad news: according to Game|Life's Chris Kohler, we can't expect Wii Fit to hit American shelves until next year. The title will release in Japan this year, but they are still evaluating the proper price point for Americans. It will cost more than $50 with the board bundled, which doesn't really surprise us, but we're very curious as to how much more. Still, considering the cost of a heavy bag, a treadmill, or an elliptical machine -- or, hey, Guitar Hero III -- we won't grumble much so long as the price is reasonable.
For those of you who think this is tiresome, or just more of the same minigames, we implore you to try to watch the trailer with an open mind. Yes, it's more of Nintendo's Perfect Families in Action -- with the Wii, they certainly love the idea of the whole family crowding around the console -- so don't expect anything else. But really look at the possibilities when it comes to space-saving, money-saving, and health benefits, as well as fun factor, and we think that some of you naysayers just may change your minds.

I'm very much going to buy a copy of wii fit. That's exactly what I wanted when I get home from work late, the gyms are closed, the weather is poor, and I need to get some excercise into my flabby body. Perfect. I am happy.

I must admit I really really hoped that Nintendo's E3 wouldn't come down to something like this. It was the one thing I dreaded, the one thing we didn't need. It perhaps wouldn't have been so bad if it was just slipped in there, but making it the focal point? No, no, no!!

But, guys... it's not like this the ONLY GAME they talked about, or is going to be released. It's okay to make the focal point of the console -- and the keynote -- getting everyone into gaming, regardless of way of life or interests, because that's the strategy that is making everyone at Nintendo rich right now. It's why they're successful -- they're re-proving that gaming is for everyone.
And it IS a really neat concept, and one that needs to be sold. I mean, seriously... I know Mario Galaxy will be awesome. I know Smash Bros. will be awesome. I know Metroid will be awesome. This is an unknown factor, so it's good that they're showing us.

I think there is a ton of potential for the balance board beyond wii fit. Imagine a skateboarding or surfing game where you lean back and forth on the balance board to control the on screen character.

In all reality I hate to say it, but what else did you all expect? Let's face it the Wii is and has been built around the casual gamer and its gonna stay that way. Get over it. I mean come on, we all knew from the start with the gimmicky controller it would be like this. Thats where the real money is. It sucks I know. But Nintendo and every other game company cares more about gettin paid, then makin us hardcore gamers happy. Be prepared for this disappoint for a while to come. And if you dont wanna get disappointed like me, do what I did. Get a 2nd job for a couple of months and buy all 3 systems. That way you'll never be disappointed and you can always have something to turn to. It's just the way it is today fellas! Sorry to bear the bad news, so dont kill the messenger!!

#8 - lol, you're ignorant.
This is a fantastic idea, and it's going to print money for Nintendo when the mainstream media gets ahold of this the way they did for Wii Sports. Plus, like everyone else is mentioning, the possibilities of using this board once in many other interesting ways, more targetted to the hardcore market, are endless.
I'll make an analogy here to the movie industry - a lot of directors have visions of the ideal movie they want to make, but it costs a lot of money to make that vision a reality. A lot of them wind up having to do shlocky, but ultimately easily marketable and commercialized films in order to have the resources to make the picture they really want.
Now it's not a perfect analogy, but in appealing to the broader demographic they're saving Nintendo from being obscured by other corporations with far more money to throw at their gaming departments and can afford to sell every console at a loss. Nintendo is all gaming department! This kind of ingenuity is helping them pull back ahead.

As I said earlier:
Yes not much on the DS or the VC side. Regardless I'm totally excited by this E3 and put it up near or even higher than E3'06. They took the affordable accelerometers from their wiimotes and created the ultimate pad. The accelerometers measure the gravity against them and can detect the differences among the different sides and ends. Put that onto a board and suddenly you got full body motion without any cumbersome suit or diodes.
Critics say waggle control is a gimmick especially since motion controllers will be standard in the "True Hi-Def Next Gen" consoles and that Nintendo will be left without any options. Nintendo has just reinvented controllers, AGAIN in the spring of the new generation.

I like the fact that this non-game will make it that much easier to convince someone to unintentionally buy a gaming console.
I mean, if people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on exercise equipment, being able to buy both exercise stuff AND a game console is a pretty sweet deal, and it keeps the kids happy.

This game sounds awesome to me. It's a logical extension of what the Wii can do. Nintendo is smart for continuing to develop experiences that the other consoles can't do and sell successfully I'm curious about the price of this though - as it is aimed at the family, I can't see it costing THAT much over $50.

plus the Nintendo-developed games that are already out....
But oh my gosh, if Nintendo tries to expand the gaming market (and make a profit! wow!), then it's a disgrace.
I can understand not liking this idea or thinking that its not for you. But pretending this is all Nintendo is doing is just ridiculous, and calling it something like a disgrace... please. How does this piss in your cheerios? What's next...if Brawl isn't online are we supposed to talk about how Iwata eats babies?

Chester, Chester, Chester, do you own a Wii or a brain even? Nintendo defined hard core gaming and it still does. There are plenty of games coming out (and Zelda) that are made for hard core gamers as well as gamers in general. Heck, even the old virtual console games are more hard core than some recent games out on all consoles. You call yourself a hard core gamer, you're more like an ignant fanboy spouting trash from all the cheese in your brain! This is WiiFit man, exercise *is* hard core. Chou Aniki is...something else.

I'm not really sure why some of you guys think this is a personal affront to your 'hardcore' sensibilities. This is exactly what the gaming scene needs and it's exactly this approach that's selling the Wii so effectively. If the Wii sells well, that's more consoles in homes to sell more games to.

I think it is utterly brilliant and will become a huge "killer app" for the Wii for 2 reasons. First, Wii Fit will really push up the fun factor for the mainstream folks. Secondly, think of the possibilities it opens up for other games. Nintendo is completely rewriting the book in how to interface with a game console and I think gamers, regardless of whether they are casual or serious are going toe benefit. Kind of makes Microsoft's Big Button seem pretty lame now doesn't it?

If anything Hardcore gamers should be more excited about things like this than anyone. Think about it: If Nintendo has cash to throw around that means they have more money to spend in development. If they have more money, they have more time. More time = better games for us. They've already got 3 AAA titles in the works, ALL for the Hardcore crowd: Metroid is certainly not a game for the uninitiated (just look at the storyline). Smash Bros may be more 'E' friendly, but if it's anything like the last two games then it's going to be BAD. ASS. Super Mario Galaxy is, as everyone says, simply amazing.
What more do you want? I'm pretty sure Wii-Fanboy-Fellatio is a long way off.

It looks like Yourself!Fitness (http://www.yourselffitness.com/) except with a controller and mini-games. I have Y!F and it is a pretty good workout "game", so the concept is sound. Maybe the Y!F folks will make a Wii version using the balance board.
I think the BB will be at best a niche product due to it not coming with the system. If I'm a game developer do I: A) Make a new SSX/Tony Hawk game that is the same across all systems or B) Spend time and $$$ tweaking it for the BB that a small percentage of Wii owners have?
Also, all the videos show the BB on a hard flat surface. My TV room happens to have deep carpet that I think will affect the BB's readings.
At least Nintendo is releasing a new controller type and providing a game that will (hopefully) appeal to a broad audience.
