With Nintendo preparing to launch its own wheel peripheral alongside one of its most well-respected franchises, there are still other parties out there looking to snugly secure your Wiimote into a wheel-like peripheral. Because, you know, holding it sideways and naked is for dumb jerks.
Enter Billet's aluminum Wii steering wheel. Not only is it functional, but if someone is trying to get the next race and you aren't about to give up your spot, you could always beat them to death. Of course, your enemy's homicide doesn't come cheap, as this bad boy retails for $44.95 USD.

Hmm...
A nice, polished, first-party wheel for free ... or a crude looking one for $45. That's a tough choice...

Where is all this animosity towards Nintendo's wheel coming from? If you like the Excite Truck control method so much, then just play Excite Truck and skip Mario Kart.

This "reinvention" of the wheel is so goddamn exiting, you know. I remember a time when steering wheel accesories consisted of a round hoop-like housing attached to a central axis which would allow you to mimic real life steering wheels. That sounds so stupid now!
It's thanks to the visionaries at Ubisoft and those chinese kids doing overtime somewhere in a factory belonging to an unknown Wii third party accesory maker that we have this new concept of the wheel accesory, where we tilt a small white plastic piece of s*** in the middle of the air like retarded 4-year olds. Finally, Nintendo caught up!
And there go Microsoft with their old-fashioned LETS-DO-THE-SAME-BORING-OLD-THING-YET-AGAIN-BUT-THIS-TIME-BIGGER-AND-BETTER steering wheel which nobody wants. Sucks to be Microsoft!!

Maybe it's because I'm not a super big racing simulation fan to begin with. Maybe it's because I have nowhere to mount a full racing assembly.
Either way, I'm personally fine with the rinky-dink little wheel that Nintendo showed off during their conference.
I'll still have to see how it all works out, though. I could see my arms getting tired after a while. And you can forget about one-handed driving.
But if Nintendo just tosses a big chunk of plastic into a game box without raising the price, I've got no complaints.
Here's one hing to kep in mind, though. With the exception of controllers that plug into the Game Cube ports, we're not going to be seeing any third-party controllers on the Wii. So if Nintendo doesn't make it, themselves, you can forget about it. And if this is the approach Nintendo is choosing to take, you can bet that you won't see a real wheel for a very long time to come.
All that being said... even though the Billet wheel is stupid expensive, it's got a larger radius which makes it more practical for adults than the little one Nintendo is putting out. Plus aluminum is light, and you won't bang it up unless you try to use it as a boomerang.
Wow... I talk too much...

what is the point of this? I could velcro the wiimote to a cheesesteak and get the same results!
IMO the ninty wheel actually DOCKS with the wiimote, allowing for buttons and other functions on the wheel to DO something
besides I'm sure gamestop will make a $12 wheel shell anyway

A $1 foam wheel would do the job well enough

People forget there's already a steering wheel attachment for Wii and Nintendo is trying to flog a dead horse already...

Though, I'm sure Nintendos will be pretty snazzy. Not sure if this one has an easy-reach Z button on it like Nintendo's does.
