It only took a couple of days before Nintendo was ready to respond to reports of WiiConnect24 damaging consoles. The response, which comes from a nameless UK source, states "we've had no reports in the UK of anything like this happening." Yes, but what about gamers in the other territories that are reporting issues? Now, you guys know we're incredibly paranoid about our Wii, treating it as the beautiful piece of technology it is. But, surely many of you have been using the service with no problems whatsoever? Maybe some of you have developed problems? For us, we're just going to play it safe because, really, the service hasn't done that much for us, anyway.

that's funny: you probably work for friggin' sony or MS. i think this whole 'problem' is as real as the syringes in the pepsi cans. With microsoft paying to have wikipedia altered in its favor i can imagine them starting bull like this. Sony too, with their lame business practices, making up fake film reviewers etc. I think the whole thing is malarky, less than 1% of Wii's have problems, their warranty covers them, so stop whining. Be glad you don't have an Ex-XBOX 360 (red ring of doom 360)

I've had my Wii since week 2 of the launch, with WiiConnect24 on since that time with no problems.
HOWEVER, I can not turn the standby connection off or WiiConnect24 doesn't work AT ALL. Both options have to be enabled for mine to work. Anyone else have that issue?

I've had my wii 6months, configured wiiconnect24 without remorse, loved the idea...read these posts on this on this site, and others...began to grow paranoia, and disabled it last night
...only to find that my forecast, will no longer connect now. Even after I re-enabled everything...could be a strange parady...but none the less..wouldn't have happened if the "Doom & Gloom" drive-by media folks wouldn't blow things up larger then they are...

@2: Do you, you know; ever take a step back and think "Hey, that sounds kinda silly" when writing stuff, or do you just write whatever comes to mind without questioning how stupid it sounds? Calm down and think through an argument you're blundering yourself into.
I'm not sure if Wii consoles are failing, maybe it's a problem in a batch of Wii consoles. I don't know, but Nintendo has taken a few days, no investigation has taken place, they haven't said they're GOING to have an investigation... Overall a very usual responce from one of the worst branches of Nintendo. But if Wii consoles are failing, I would like the issue resolved and properly, not the "well, we'll do it eventually" attitude NoE:UK normally has.

I've had one since launch and have no problems. I do keep mine in an enclosed cabinet and noticed that it does get a little toasty at times. So I try to crack open the door so it can breathe a bit. I'm thinking of turning it off just to conserve energy. It's not really worth keeping it on all the time just to see a flashing blue LED once every few months.

No REAL problems so far, i run it all the time
Every few months i will get an odd problem where my Wii Remote's synch will drop, and sometimes the Wii itself won't respond to any attempts to turn it on, but that is solved with a simple power cycle

I only heard about this story in the last 48 hours, at most.
To be honest, it seems like it's just a bunch of FUD. If reports continue to persist, though, an investigation should be done.
For what it's worth, I've had mine on standby mode since early December and no problems at all.

Ss I said in the other post, since WiiConnect24 is on by default you have no way of knowing whether it is the main cause of any failure. There could be numerous other factors involved, and as for me even though I don't use the service at all (only 5 wii friends, T_T, and none of them sent me stuff after I'd had it for a while) I leave it on, and nothing seems to be wrong with mine, although I've only had it for two months.

I have had my Wii since day one (November 19) and have had Wii Connect 24 on the entire time. I did worry about the heat it kicked off so I got one of those cool light up stand with the fan from Game Stop a few months back. I keep my will in well ventilated, vertical placement and all seems well. Now if anyone can tell me how I can remove the word Game Stop from the front of the stand I would be grateful.

I just got my Wii back from getting repaired yesterday. I'm not entirely sure what the cause of the problems was, but it could very well have something to do with the PS3 sitting next to it and blowing hot air all over it.
That being said, I did have WiiConnect 24 going all the time. And I've had the unit since Christmas.

I'm in the UK and had wiiconnect24 on since I got my console. I started to suffer from the graphical glitches a couple of months after purchase. I thought my TV was broken to start with but then these reports started to surface and so I put two and two together and thought I had better check my console on a friends TV, with the same graphical glithches. Luckily, I don't live too far from the Nintendo Service Centre so drove over to get a replacement. Now the interesting bit....the chap who gave me the replacement told me to ensure that I turned the system to red standby as wiiconnect24 was causing the consoles to overheat and cause the issues with the GPU. Straight from the horses mouth there, they have obviously been briefed to advice customers to turn the function off to prolonge the life of the console. So when are Nintendo going to provide an update that sorts this issue out, that's if a software upgrade can help at all?

I'm from the uk. i bought my wii as preowned from Game back in April. My wii has been on standby and with wiiconnect24 running all the time and it too is suffering with these graphic glitches. the glitches are most noticeable where the draw distance is long such as in wii sports baseball and tennis also in zelda.

Can you people saying "there's no problem", "put your wii in a more ventilated area",etc. stop being so naive and selective in your reasoning.
Firstly, the defect is there, whether its caused by wiiconnect24 is a point of contention but the artifacts are clearly caused by overheating. The wii does get very hot if you leave it on wiiconnect24 for a couple of weeks without play, and with the lack of big games after zelda and before RE4 this is why people are noticing it now. It requires a graphically intensive game to see it at first, but it gets worse to the point of being persistant even on menu systems.
Next, if you don't have a graphically intensive game with heavy effects like RE4 just stop gibbering. I only noticed the defect after months of standby time when i picked up a copy of RE4 wiimake, and can not see it in wii play, wii sports, etc. because they don't push the console.
I have a launch wii, and it has developed this defect. i can evidence everything, from the presense of the defect, to the ventilation of the wii system, to the amount of time on standby its had (screens of the calenders). That's if its such a ball ache to at least consider the fact there maybe a defect with a large number of wii units, or possibly with all wiis but dependant on the use of the system, the use of wiiconnect24 and the length of time its left on standby at high heat.
On to my real point; I reported the problem with my wii on 08/07/2007 to nintendo uk and yet this guy says nobody in the uk has reported it. I REALLY doubt that i am the only one that has reported the problem.
This is very dissappointing, and I think its in everyone's interest that this issue is fixed/addressed, and the warranty extended, or there's going to be a hell of a lot of pissed off people when the graphically intensive mario galaxy and metroid prime 3 come out.
Once again, please consider the fact that this might be a severe problem for users that are using the wii exactly as it was designed. Also take into account, in the uk we have to pay to ship the thing back to nintendo too.

As far as tech support staff saying that a problem has never been reported, I'm pretty sure they're trained to respond with that when their corporation doesn't know what's causing the problem.
I know when I had ISP problems, I called every day for over two weeks, and every time I was told that no one had reported any issues (I did know this to be untrue). Finally, one day I called and there was a tape recording saying that tech support was closed and explaining what the problem was that affected ALL customers in the area (in this case, a backbone was overloaded).
I realize that ISP != console, but I think the principle remains the same. Saying that there is a problem without actually knowing WHAT the problem is, can be a very bad move.

It's a defective heatsink not wiiconnect24 causing the problem. Doesn't matter if the fan is on the defective heatsink not working will kill the gpu eventually. All wiiconnect24 does since it is using power is causing the issue to be revealed sooner.
Wiis with working heatsinks do not get hot while on wiiconnect24 they are as warm as they are on when the unit has been on for hours. They don't get any hotter then other electronics using a standby mode. As for power it's nothing compared to what the xbox 360 consumes while being on that sucker will wring up your electric bill more then four or five wiis on standby mode.
Wiiconnect24 doesn't damage the wiis. The errors seen with the green pixels guess what occur on overclocked vid cards or on vid cards whose heatsinks have failed. In both cases it's the heatsink not doing it's job. Since the wii on standby isn't overclocking the gpu or the system it's a defective heatsink in certain launch units.
Other people have reported that the nintendo tech reps said defective heatsink not wiiconnect24. Nintendo wouldn't design the system to be damaged due to wiiconnect24 they tested the system and designed it to be used with wiiconnect24. As any vid card maker will tell you a defective heatsink will cause those vid card issues.
Not every tech monkey on the phone knows jack squat. If it was wiiconnect24 itself Nintendo wouldn't announce it or have there tech reps tell people not to turn it on since that sets them to be sued. Since Nintendo is repairing all units affected and unlike Microsoft are good at it people have nothing to worry about.

i got my wii at the same time as two other family members, from the same store.
they have both experienced problems - the graphics glitches, like shiny smeary pixels - and are not big users of wiiconnect24, and do turn their consoles to the red 'really off' setting.
i, on the other hand, have only turned my wii off a handleful of times, am wiiconnect24 day in day ouy, and have had no such problems.

Well, I too have sent my wii back to Nintendo, reported the problem, and am from the UK. Maybe it is a 'heat sync' problem, but surely that is directly connected to having the console on the whole time? And the rep on the phone seemed like I was the latest in a loonnngg line of people reporting the same thing. Everyone makes mistakes tho, and i still LOVE my wii..

it's still only one percent of consoles, and it is still covered by the warantee. nintendo didn't embarassingly extend the warantee because of their problems. big deal.

troy, I'm on my third Wii and the last time I checked my bank account I didn't see any deposits originating from Sony or Microsoft. I had the dead pixel issue twice. This is a known issue with the Wii and depending upon how fast your turnaround time was between repairs I can easily see people getting defect Wii after defective Wii until Nintendo finally recognized the widespread nature of the issue.
Before your knee starts to jerk and breaks your other incisor let me clear this up from the start: This was not user error. I was not using my Wii from the interior of an oven set to self clean, I wasn't using it underwater, and it wasn't the fault of a TV that can magically repair the dead pixels as soon as another video source was chosen. It was a defect. Yes, Nintendo can make a defective products.
It's funny how you see conspiracies everywhere when Microsoft is around but you accept the unproven claim of a 1% failure rate for Nintendo. Fact is unless you work for the company in question you'll never know. Unlike the 360 it seems like Nintendo has resolved the issue, and unlike the 360 this wasn't a fatal error.

I went the technical route just for fun. I used my Kilawatt meter to detect how many watts the wii uses and here are my results.
The wii uses 1w powered off with Standby turned off
10w powered off with Standby turned on
18w powered on and running at the main menu
So based on my power rates in my area if I leave my wii turned on all month with standby on it will cost $0.58 or $7.01 / year. With standby turned off it was $0.06 or $0.70 / year.

I turned off standby during last week's heat wave as a precaution: I noticed the Wii was a couple of degrees warmer on standby than the room's temperature, and since it was 41C/106F outside, it seemed prudent to take pity on the poor thing and turn it off for a while.
Next on the grocery list: an air conditioner.
