One of our readers wrote in to inform us that, with the latest firmware update for the Wii, Freeloader no longer works with the system. In trying to load the software, the Wii merely spits error messages at the user, laughing maniacally as they attempt to use it. This is just another feature that snuck its way into the update.
Eurogamer contacted Nintendo in regards to the issue, but Nintendo could only display apathy. What with it not being an official Nintendo product, they see no problem with the newly-found incompatibility of the two.
Latest firmware update kills Freeloader

What? If you have an Action Replay or foreign region disc that doesn't work, just use the disk-swapping trick. I got it on my first go!

On kotaku.com a user said "freeloader still works, just load up GCOS first then swap discs. same goes for modchip config discs.". Is it true?
I bought a freeloader two days ago, I'm still waiting for it to arrive and now Nintendo screws everything up!

It probably all still works with the disc-swap trick, but their starting to head us off
And remember, those who would try to avoid this by not updating, the next first-party Wii game you buy (Metroid, BWii, Galaxy, Brawl) will forcibly update the firmware anyway

Wow, they're even porting the concept of "unwanted forced firmware updates" from the PSP to the Wii.

Something else they broke.....
Support for USB2LAN non authorized adapters.
Ever since the update I can browse the internet through the Inet Channel, but when I try to load News or the Shop channel I get an error.
Called Ninty, cs confirmed that b/c it is not a Nintendo product that it will no longer work, in fact according to the CS rep I spoke with I am lucky it works at all now.

At first I was pissed about this, but then I realised that freeloader was being used to boot SD loader, which, quite obviously, was being used to pirate ROMs as it was on cube, and would therefore cut into VC sales. It was a sad, but necessary move by nintendo.
If Datel had just stopped being morons and had not sold SD loader, then maybe this would not have happened.

@3: could you please give more detail? What does GCOS mean? All I've found is a homebrew operating system, in which case I really don't see how that helps since I don't have any way to run homebrew on my Wii.

Looks like I won't be getting Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 with a freeloader anytime soon.

I think plufim is right on track. They did this to stop pirating, which is a shame because a lot of people (me included) use freeloader to play imports. I blame pirates, not Nintendo. I hope Nintendo will release an official boot disk or stop region locking games, it's very lame!
