Yesterday's topic got us thinking about another awesome game set to come out this year: Super Mario Galaxy. As we're sure you've noticed, there have been a few of these Mario games over the years (and spin-offs!), and each one tends to have something special. Then there are remakes, tie-ins ... Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis ... is there anything the crew can't do? But that isn't the question on the table. The question is: what's your favorite of the Mario games? Since there are so many different types and styles, we won't fuss if you choose a few favorites instead of just one. Wii Warm Up: More favorites - Mario edition

I'm afraid my favorites are pretty cliche, but I'll go with it. Here's a couple of categories and my favs for each.
"Classic" Mario: SMB 3
"Sports" Mario: Mario Kart Double Dash
"Platforming" Mario: Mario 64
"Odd-ball" Mario: Super Mario RPG

Mario 64 is probably the best. I hated Sunshine. Only played the first 2 levels. I loved Golf and Tennis too. Mario Kart is fun but repetitive. I probably spent the most of my childhood free time playing the original trilogy though....wow i forgot how many marios there are!

I'm really hoping that Super Mario Bros. 3 is released on the VC in time to promote Galaxy. I guess that I'd pick that one as my favorite although Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros., and of course the original Super Mario Bros. are all very close.
As far as tie-ins go, I loved every Mario Kart game except for Double Dash with Mario Kart DS as my favorite. My other favorite tie in that I am REALLY hoping is released on the VC soon is Super Mario RPG. Mario + RPG was a great idea and IMHO none of the semi RPG follow-ups (Paper Mario, Superstar Saga, etc.) have lived up to the original Mario RPG.

Homie can't play basketball; he has no skiiiills! The other sport he seems to cower in fear from is football. I would very much like to play a NFL Blitz like Mario game. I bet Donkey Kong would make a monster linebacker. His hits would be malicious!

Super Mario Bros. 3 one of my first games and Super Mario 64. Tie-in would be the Mario Party series since my brother, sister, and myself have a blast together with it.

It's a hard decision but I'd have to say my favorite of the Mario games is Super Mario 64. And in a close second is Super Mario World. Both are great

That would have to be Mario is Missing. Hahaha, kidding, anybody heard of that one though? Sometimes I wonder if I made it up, until I find my copy of it for SNES.
Actually, it would have to be Super Mario RPG. Greatest Mario game of all time, possibly greatest RPG of all time... that game had it all. Second it's available on Virtual Console, I'm getting it. I will probably be like the first person to download it, ready the exact second it appears... :)

Shadow, I totally remember that game! My friend and I used to play it because we thought it was fun. How we thought that I'll never know...
Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are pretty much tied in my book for best Mario games. Mario 64 is also excellent, and Mario Kart DS is my favorite tie-in.

SMB 3 got everything right- Super Mario 64, as good as it is, has a terrible camera system, and though it's still a terrifically fun game to play, Mario Brothers 3 in my mind was perfect, in the same way A Link to the Past was the perfect Zelda game.
Super Mario World is a close second- not only is it a beautiful game, it controls like a dream, and the levels were fun and inventive, especially the usage of Yoshi.

Super Mario Bros 1-3
Super Mario World
New Super Mario Bros
Super Paper Mario
MarioKart: Double Dash
Super MarioKart
Honestly I can't get into the 3d Mario games, mainly because of the camera and the goofy stuff in Sunshine, it looks like Galaxy will change my mind on this.

As far as Mario games go... I love them all. I never disliked any, and I even thought Super Mario Sunshine was great (the story was awful though). Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World come to mind when I think of the best of the best though.
I love ALL of the Mario Kart games. I liked Double Dash the best, but I put the most time into the DS one.
I absolutely love the Paper Mario series, but Mario RPG has a special place in my heart, lol..
I also thought the best spin off out of all of the sports, games and just spin off's, the best 2 were: Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
Thats my 2 cents.. lol

Classics: Super Mario World (Mario 2 and 3 close behind)
Classic Spin-off: Yoshi's Island
Sports: Mario Kart DS
Other Spin-offs: Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion
I also really enjoyed Sunshine! I didn't play Mario 64 until after Sunshine (skipped the N64 generation), and wasn't all that impressed going back -- so I kinda missed the Mario 64 love train.

World 5-3 of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Other than that, I've really grown to appreciate the focus of the original game over the sequels.

I guess Mario Bros. 3 was the one that captured my imagination. It was pretty much perfect in my mind.
Other than Mario 64, I'd say the original Super MarioKart on the Snes is the 'Mario' spin-off which I've spent most time on. In my opinion it's never been beaten since - no other "Kart" sequel has matched the pace and excitement of the original. The learning curve was just genius - you can become VERY good at that game, where future versions (except the Advance one, which was similar to the original) made to too easy for poor gamers to win.

Let's see here...
Classic: SMB2
3D/Modern: Mario 64
Sports: Mario Kart 64
Other: Super Mario RPG
What I *REALLY* wish they'd do is pay Square however much money they want and have them make a Smash Bros RPG semi-sequel to Mario RPG

Honestly, I'm shocked at the lack of love Super Paper Mario and New Super Mario Bros. are getting. I revise my favorites to include only these two, to balance things out.
New Super Paper Mario Brothers 64 3!

Side Scrolling: Tie Between Super Mario World and Super Mario 2 (Super Mario USA)

Favorite Game with Mario in it would have to be Super Smash Brothers Melee. The hours of enjoyment we've gotten out of that game - no other game comes close.

seriously i dont get why people dont like the camera system in the 3d games. Constant manipulation is made a joy with the way the pads are designed, and realy adds to the interaction .
