In a rather substantial update over at the dojo today, a new character has been revealed in the Pokemon Trainer above. As a kind of "three for the price of one" character, using him means using his three little buddies you see above. See, the Pokemon Trainer never actually gets into the fight himself, instead pulling the puppet strings of his Pokemon from the sidelines of battle.

I don't know about you guys but this seems pretty lame. I mean you get to fight with new pokemon but I'd rather fight with someone like Hitmonless, Blaziken, or some other pokemon along those lines. I'm not sure how well Ivysaur will do in battle either. I don't see this character being too strong in SSBB, just another character that will probably have to be used A LOT to figure out how to use him effectively.

I for one welcome "joke" characters in the game. I liked playing as jigglypuff when I just wanted to screw around and make people made, so this could be fun.
It actually could be a pretty powerful character if you are invulnerable while you are changing pokemon...

na i think the pokemon selection is well thought out cuz those three came from the original starters from red/blue, and plus when it comes to recognizability these 3 are better choices than blaziken, etc. And you actually get to play as the pokemon and not the trainer which is a crazy plus

Sweetness they actually made a Pokemon trainer. And to cut off those asking, "The trainer is in the background. What about the scrolling backgrounds?" "Team Rocket's blasting off again!"

Nice choice of pokemon! One from each starter evolutionary line and stage. I think playing as Ivysaur will be worth it. However, that stamina stat is going to make this character difficult to play as, just because you will have to switch pokemon on a regular basis just to keep them all in good condition. This might require you to switch from, say, Charizard to Squirtle right when you need knockout power, or from Squirtle to Ivysaur when you need to rack up damage (I assume Squirtle will be the best one to use against enemies in the low damage percentages, as he could probably move and hit faster than the others). This character might be the biggest pain in the *** as a computer player, though...

I think this is a good idea. Much better than adding 3 or 4 *more* pokemon to the SSB fighting roster. This game is supposed to be a celebration of all things Nintendo, with representation from all walks of Nintendo life.
This character is creative, and allows Big N to fill the cast with other cool Nintendo holdovers.

All the 3 Pokemon starters needed this treatment way before any 2nd to 4th generation Pokemon.
Plus.. the trainer.. "RED" needed to be in Brawl in some shape or form.
I wonder what the final smash will be? Maybe they all evolve except Charizard?

I can see how people would want more powerful Pokemon to fight with and things like that. But those 3 are some of the most identifiable Pokemon there are, and you can't make an overpowered character.
I think Pokemon trainer is an awesome idea, can't wait to try him.

This update is friking awesome, I thought. At least, until I remembered that you can ALREADY play as Pokemon/summon Pokemon with Pokeballs. That kind of killed it, but just a little. It is still a great idea; a 3 for 1 situation.
This character will be a wait-and-see. I agree with some people that he may be difficult to master, but he/they may end up being one of the best character(s) in Brawl.
Great Update, nevertheless.
