Castlevania II: Simon's Quest has popped up on the ESRB's ratings page, meaning that it'll be headed for the Virtual Console any time now. As total Castlevania nerds, we couldn't be more excited. We know that a lot of people hate on Simon's Quest for being so divergent from both the original game and the more modern Symphony of the Night style, but we quite enjoy the Zelda II-esque action-RPG gameplay. We also enjoy the Nightcrawler-like black and red suit that Simon Belmont wears in the game for some reason. The game has been rated E, which, we think, is pretty lenient for a game in which the main goal is to collect a bunch of corpse parts in order to resurrect and subsequently re-murder their owner.

This has always been and remains probably my favorite Castlevania game. Not sure why. The superb music definitely contributes. Also, I think having freedom to roam as you see fit, and not just inside some insanely huge castle complex, gives me the strongest feeling of actually being a grownup person in the Castlevania world.
The atmosphere is real oppressive and moody, too. "What a terrible night to have a curse" is great dialogue.

For no apparent reason, I really like this game. I've actually played farther into this one than Castlevania I or III, which seems like some sort of gaming blasphemy. Man, the woods music during the day is good!
Can we please reminisce about more terrible quotes from that game? I can't help but remember how bad the "dialogue" from this one was.
"A FLAME FLICKERS INSIDE THE RING OF FIRE."

Ah, Castlevania II. My first Castlevania game. Before I knew it was the oddball of the bunch, before I knew how to get past certain parts, before I even really understood it all, I loved it. Sure, it's not the best game ever but it introduced the idea of scenery and environment creating tone in a video game to me, an idea I thought was exhilerating. Even though I see it's flaws after all this time, the mysticism it gave me when I was little didn't quite wear off. I'll almost definately end up buying this (again) sooner or later.

While I have a Wii, I still haven't connected online with it yet so I haven't been able to download any virtual console games. That being said, I would download very few because I already own most of the good ones. That is the case with Castlevania II.
Upon reading this bit of news of it heading to the virtual console, I was inspired to fire up the old NES and give it a go. Nearly 2 hours later I realized how fun this game still is. I made it through the first two mansions and was well on my way to the third before giving it a rest. It's funny, I haven't played the game in 15 years but I still remembered what to do with the white and blue crystals. I remember calling the Nintendo Power hotline many, many years ago to find out what to do with the blue crystal. I would have never figured it out, and now, I don't think I'll ever forget.
