Maybe we're making too big a deal about a small slip of paper, but considering they have a monopoly in this town as far as release day games go, we're often forced to choke down their practices.

This is why I only buy used games from Gamestop if I absolutely have to. I usually buy my games from Amazon or just go to Meijer/Target/Wal-Mart if I can't wait for it to ship. I don't like Gamestop opening up my "new" game and putting their crap inside. I also don't like how they prey on people who want to return a game and give them just over half of what they paid for it as a "trade-in" and then turn around and sell it "used" for only $5 under the "new" price. Ugh, this is raising my blood pressure. Not worth it.

I have the same problems with them (especially them trying to sell opened games as "new"). But, for me, I'm in such an area that it's either GameStop, Wal-mart or the Circuit City the next town over. Wal-mart is usually where I go, but they tend to get games 2 or 3 days after their release. Obviously, I couldn't wait that long for this game.

I usually buy my games at either Best Buy or Circuit City. The only times I hit Gamestop is when I'm looking for *specific* gems, like Battalion Wars 1 (On sale for 10 USD! It was even NEW). Its impossible to find one elsewhere, and even in Gamestop, I had to ask for it, because it wasn't in display.

I don't understand why people act like Game Stop is the only game in town. Seriously, other stores sell videogames. No, its true.
Seriously, they are out there.
I saw them.
No, for real.

Gamestop in general bothers me, so I just cross the street and shop at BestBuy. I'm not sure if I've complained here about this before, but I've grown tired of being harassed into buying a damn Gamestop Card. I know they, as meagerly paid employees, are forced to shill the damn things; I'm just tired of figuring out different ways to say "No."

Gamestop is a gem for finding 1-4 year old games at bargain prices (typically used, which is fine by me). If I want something new, I'll get it at Costco or maybe if CC or BB are having a sale, but the smart money is on waiting 6 months to a year after a game comes out, then getting it for 20-30% of the MSRP from a GameStop. I never trade my games there -- let other suckers bolster their supply -- but being on the smart side of that transaction has worked out great so far.

At 8 am, Target opened, I walked in and bought MP3:C today. First day release, no problem.
Stop patronizing GameStop if they aren't the only gig in town - Meijer and Target and such don't have lines waiting, don't push their used games or strategy guides or anything else on you, either.
And if it isn't a game that I need to play instantly, I just buy it online.

If you don't agree with their practices, stop shopping there. By continuing to shop there, you're telling GameStop that you implicitly approve of their practices. There are plenty of other ways to get games, either by going a little further out of your way, or by ordering online. The game's going to be just as good if you play it two days after release as it is on release day.

There's this really cool thing I heard about from my grandma called the Internet. I guess they even have a way so you can buy things on this Internet. Maybe they have your video gameboy games you like so much and you could ask for them. But I heard they also steal your credit card and do sex to your dog, so maybe it's not a good idea.

Oh yeah, and from an economic standpoint Gamestop's practices are brilliant. The bulk of non-savvy buyers will see this and think it's a great deal and not realize they just paid $20 to rent a game. Meanwhile, Gamestop gets to make more money on the same product twice.
Ethically it might be more than a little questionable, but if people do it (and they will) then who's to blame?

The last time I walked into a Gamestop, they held me at gunpoint and forced me to buy a game. They also threatened to kidnap my dog if I didn't preorder anything. The experience has left me scarred for life. Scarred, I tell you.

I for one don't have a problem with the trade in of Gamestop. It gives me a way to get rid of the games that I no longer want. But I do agree with 1 and 2 about them opening a new game and then selling it off as new. If my game is new then it better have it's nice little cellophane covering to let me know that it has not been tampered with.

I like going into the local Gamestop (formerly EB Games here) and looking for mis-marked stuff.
When I was in the market for a memory card I found a used 128MB card there for $2.99. They apparently thought it was a 128 block card.
They also had a used GC wavebird there for $13 or so once.

Who the hell cares? DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT A BUSINESS IS? Gamestop is a business, they HAVE to make money, they HAVE to profit in some way or they wouldn't be in operation. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but come the fuck on. Gamestop buys games for nearly, what we pay for them, then they turn around and sell them back to us, they are suppliers. They can't make any money off of this process, that is why they are in the USED GAME BUSINESS! When you sell back your games, they make money, it's the only way they make money. It has nothing to do with the 49.99 dollar game you bought! You can get mad that they advertise for you to sell games back, but it's the ONLY way they make money, AND they wouldn't do it if people didn't respond to it. I worked at gamestop for 3 years. People, mostly 360 owners, turn around and sell their games days, if not weeks after they come out. They are just trying to stay in business. If you didn't trade things in (GOD FORBID), then gamestop wouldn't be there to sell new games to you.

I don't know where you folk at wiifanboy live, but in my town there's like 10 game shops within any 5 mile radius. Seriously... the shopping center where wal-mart is even has 2 game stores.
I much prefer to give my business to the little shops regardless of their problems. I want those little specialty stores with better selection to stay open, rather than having my entertainment needs dictated by wal-mart's selection. They already refuse to sell music with explicit lyrics... how long before they refuse to sell games over E rating?
I've had the same annoyances with GameStop, but EB games has annoyed me even more. My preferred store is Game Crazy, and they give good trade-in value too.

monkey_v_robot,
What is an "internet?" Is it like used to catch fish? I don't understand the connection here.
Steve,
I understand that I could not shop there and 95% of the time I go elsewhere. But when it's the only place I can have a shot at getting a game I absolutely need on launch day (yes, I absolutely needed this today), then I have no other choice. The brick-and-mortar outlets are too far from my house and I don't want to wait for an online retailer.
Funran,
I understand they're a business and need to make money, but there are certain things to be said for customer service and offering an environment that encourages that as opposed to asking me to pre-order every Wii game coming up when buying the game, joining their plan or whatever and grilling me about why I didn't pre-order Metroid. Maybe I didn't because it was there, when I asked, available for purchase? Or maybe it was because I didn't want to give your company 5 dollars to float on while I wait months for the game to come out, only to have lost the receipt and my 5 bucks with it (or had the ink on the paper run, etc).

David,
Listen, to argue with someone through text you should really learn how to write. I'm not saying that I'm an excellent writer, but I don't work for an online blog community. I'm honestly having a hard time trying to convey what you're saying when the sentence is a barrage of miss-punctuation and run-on sentences.
Regardless of all of that.....I'm not sure what reservation sales have anything to do with the original point of discussion. It's simple, they need to make money and most people ARE happy, I'm sorry you're not. Most people ENJOY reserving games, knowing that they don't have to worry about a game selling out, (it does happen, not always but it does). Of course a game like Metroid isn't going to sell out, Nintendo has plenty shipped, they know the demand.
Look, my point is that Gamestop (regardless if I used to work there) is a business. They need to make money, they need your used games. You choose to be insulted by their advertisement for trading in games. You could just as easily say, "Nah, I'm going to keep this one" and pull the tape off of the flyer and throw it in the trash.
What really drives me nuts is that you're just looking for something to write about so you can get paid. It's frustrating to see articles being written with no substantial claims, or relevance, just so you as a freelancer writer can make a few more dollars today.

Funran,
First of all, I'm pretty offended at the whole "looking for more dollars" thing. Didn't your teachers every explain to you what happens when you assume something? I didn't just put this up because I wanted to get some extra scratch from another blog post. If you're a reader on the regular, than you would already know that I post plenty of stories on a daily basis. This one extra post isn't going to make a difference.
Second, don't attack my intelligence. I'm not trying to argue with you and I certainly do know how to write. What I was doing was simply expressing some of the other reasons why I (and numerous others, based on the comments in this very post) dislike the company (although hate is a more appropriate word).
Most importantly, I'm being civil and furthering the discussion the best I can. If you want to attack me some more, I'll pull out the ban hammer. That isn't a threat exclusive to just you, either. We promote healthy, friendly discussion here and I want to keep it that way.

That's pretty hypocritical to say writing this article was meant for money (as a bad thing) and putting ads in our games to sell them back (as a good thing). From a business stand-point I see no difference in either argument. Honestly though, Gamestop pisses me off and I'll tell you why. I hate it when I want to buy a product and a store gives me the 3rd degree on "reservations" "warrenties" "service plans" Bite me to all of them I wants my damn game! It's a hassle, it's annoying. They wear those buttons on their shirts so I don't have to hear their long winded speeches before they hand me the game I just bought!

See, you have it all wrong. I didn't ban you because you worked for GameStop, nor because you challenged me (although I fail to see the challenge anywhere in your statements, but that's because I'm a big moron, apparently) and I didn't ban you because you don't think the same as me. I banned you because personal attacks don't fly here. I'm glad you could come out and offer a differing opinion, because we encourage that here, but when you fail to act like a civilized person, then you're banned. So ... you're banned.
HardWare Guy,
Believe me, I don't want to shop there. My town has 2 Wal-Marts, a Circuit City (although it's on the opposite side of town from me) and a GameStop. The Wal-Marts don't get games until days later than release date (they're the smaller version, not the super-uber Wal-Marts you see all over the place) and Circuit City didn't get their shipment in. So, I was forced to go to GameStop.
hvnlysoldr,
Weird, it isn't doing that for me and the rest of the staff are seeing it correctly as well. Sorry. :(

I sympathize, i too am basically limited to GameStop and Wal-Mart, the nearest alternatives being 30 minutes away
But i've never found GameStop particularly intrusive, however thier trade-in rates are atrocious, one of the few reasons i kept my GameCube (for that reason, also to keep being able to use Action Replay on the few GC games i use it for, and to hopefully one day get back on PSO via a private server, if i can find a damn broadband adapter)
all in all, i've never found cause for the hate
I was offended that the guy behind the counter when i picked up MP3 thought NiGHTS was spelled with a K (kidding, although true)
