Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and BioShock ... what a pair, eh? Both shooters, both with their own unique spin on the genre, both flagship titles for their respective systems, at least for a while -- since both are followed by even bigger titles soon to come. So what's the difference? Well, one (BioShock) was hyped to the stratosphere, and the other seemed to suffer (according to some) from a lack of attention until just before release. BioShock's other advantage was that the title "suffered" from controversy over content, which often boosts sales.
So which one came out on top in the sales charts last week, when Corruption debuted? The less-hyped Metroid pulled out the top spot. Big Daddies are no challenge for Samus.
It looks great for us, and will give the Wii some attention in regard to "hardcore" success, but it's not as simple as outselling a competing title. BioShock had a week's head start and is on two platforms to boot, so it's no surprise that a johnny-come-lately could sneak in and snatch the top spot. It doesn't make Metroid less awesome, but it's not a clear-cut situation. Still, let's take our moment in the sun and spare some time to bask in the Wii's success in all markets, casual and traditional.
Hype isn't everything: MP3 punks down BioShock

According to vgcharts.org, Bioshock has still outsold MP3 total, and that's not counting the PC sales.

I have both, and I prefer playing Metroid over Bioshock. The latter is a decent game, just not as fun as Metroid...

Sales don't mean anything...Qualoty does! Halo 3 will make both of these games combined look like crap...and halo 3 sucks.
Bioshock (average rating 97), Metroid Prime 3 (average rating 91)....'nough said.
Quality >Quantity everytime. ;)

This is retarded -- this is week #2 of BioShock being out and week #1 of Metroid, of course MP3 was going to win by a landslide this week.
I think Bioshock outsold MP3 in week #1 sales, but the numbers were pretty close.

The Bioshock numbers were 408,119 units for its first week. Metroid's numbers are 314,157 for its first week. Obviously, Metroid's first week was Bioshock's 2nd week. Total numbers so far; Metroid 314,157; Bioshock 562,388. Regardless, I'm happy for both Xbox 360 and Wii that they are successful and are selling lots of software.

This is looking at their first weeks on sale and of course as most Nintendo fans know, our games sell for months MONTHS on the top charts. Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros, Wii Play, LoZ for a few months. MP3 will take the lifetime sales.

I have to admit that I haven't been able to play Corruption enough to give a decent enough comparison.
Bioshock is an incredible game and is definitely front runner for the best game of 2007. Graphics aside, the fact that there's countless different ways to play the game (run and gun v well planned strategies,) make it incredibly immersive.
MP3:C, though, makes you work more. Where Bioshock had a button you could hit that says "you should go here now," The Metroid series has never been one to coddle a player. There aren't any regrowth tanks every ten feet in Metroid games. You blow past a save spot and you're screwed.
I'll be interested in seeing how quickly I want to turn around and play Corruption again after I've beaten it. With Bioshock I couldn't wait to give it another go.
As far as sales go, though, I'm more interested to see which one sells more in the long run.

I laugh at the notion that a fanboy site shouldn't be so. As long as we keep it clean and coherent it's fine.

So, one of Nintendo's flagship first party games didn't sell as much as a brand new unknown IP that had barely any marketing ?
Yah, I guess you can say MP won...

I loved Prime 3. Beat it on Normal so far, now taking on Veteran, then Hypermode.
I've only played the PC demo of BioShock. Sadly, my PC isn't quite good enough to run it at a decent enough clip (I think I get about 30fps at 800x600 on medium settings!), so I'll probably get the 360 version when I get a 360. I've seen friends play it, too, and it seems quite fun from my impressions.
They may be both first-person games, but they're beasts of two different colors. Let's not compare, and just enjoy both games.

I hereby promise this is not a troll, because I love this site. I rented MP and own Bioshock. I think Bioshock is pretty clearly the better game, although I haven't played too much of either. Not saying MP is bad, by any means, it's just - not gotten its hooks into me.
Reason? COD4 beta, baby! I can't play anything else but.

I only played the demo of Bioshock, and while it was amazing, I prefer Metroid. Bioshock just seemed way too easy to me. Everything is outlined right in front of you, whereas Metroid really makes you think long and hard about where and what to do next. Also, the more and more you play metroid, the more you marvel at the art direction the game took. The Wii might not be that powerful a machine, but this game is gorgeous!! It's no Bioshock, but it's still gorgeous! In the end though, I do agree that Metroid will have longer shelf life solely because almost all of Nintendo's flagship titles do. Especially with the word getting out of it being the prettiest and best overall game in the Wii's library so far,

Well, the point is that Metroid Prime 3 did well, which proves that the hardcore is still there to support Nintendo
I actually did an article in my school paper about BioShock, Metroid Prime 3, and Halo 3. called "3rd Quarter 2007 is FPS Heaven"

MP3 will win in lifetime sales. It has no competition on the Wii, and Nintendo games have ridiculously long legs. BioShock will be immediately erased from memory when Halo 3 comes out. Hey remember Gears of War or Lost Planet?

I was really anticipating Bioshock for about the last year and have actually been somewhat dissapointed in it... Yes, the graphics are great, the story is great, the allusions to Ayn Rand's work is appropriate, but the gameplay is not so great. It was far too easy to die (with seemingly little consequence) and overall, just didn't present much of a challenge. I really didn't find anything to be very "revolutionary" at all, as it was hyped to be.
That said, I have never been much of a Metroid fan, but I picked it up after "beating" Bioshock on Mon. and I have to say, although I wasn't expecting much, it is much more enjoyable and addicting. I can't wait to go home to solve more of its puzzles, whereas I found myself almost dreading "having" to play more of Bioshock... I plan to give it another go after Metroid and try different tactics now that I understand the game a bit better, but as of right now, Metroid is by far the superior choice for me. Its just a lot more fun and that's what's important about a "game" right?
"Would you kindly" give Metroid a chance? Indeed.

My only problem with Bioshock is that it's not a challenge to beat. There is no consequence whatsoever for dying. Also, the game isn't as "deep" as I thought it would be, or as "deep" as it was hyped to be.

The problem here is comparing apples to oranges. Metroid is an exploration game, with a focus on the environment and the challenge. Bioshock is about telling a story that you interact with -- it's like the FPS version of an old point-and-click adventure game, where you discover more about the story from the things you find lying around. They lead you around, but (I don't want to put in spoilers) there's actually a reason for that in the story. I'm not thrilled about the zero-consequence-for-death thing (there's a story reason for that, too...), but while I may enforce a "death penalty" on myself (e.g. reload from last save) for my second playthrough, it's not ruining the game for me.
I don't have Metroid yet (want to finish Bioshock at least once first), but I'm incredibly pumped about both games. I don't want to pick which of my kids I love most ;-)

I have both.
Neither have online gameplay. For Bioshock, I understand, for MP3 I don't.
The story for Bioshock is deep and has a lot to it. The story for MP3 is supposed to be deep, but it's not even as deep as Halo, which isn't really all that deep, IMO.
The controls for Bioshock are standard FPS controls as defined by Halo with a couple little extras which work well with the story, same old, same old. The controls for MP3 work as well as a mouse and keyboard on a PC, which I believe are the ultimate in FPS controls, I found the MP3 control scheme to be innovative and fundamentally correct.
Bioshock is a beautiful game to look at. MP3 is a beautiful game to look at, by Wii standards but pales in comparison to the other.
Bioshock is by far the better game, IMO. MP3 should have online gameplay, I don't see why it doesn't.

Interesting how opinions are split
Some refuse to choose between two momuments of greatness, some found BioShock disappointing, some found MP3 disappointing
Diversity is fun. Oh, and Super Metroid Ridley is kicking my ass (strictly he isn't tougher than Fusion Ridley, but Fusion Ridley had a MUCH bigger arena, not this cramped little space with acid around it)

@Rubang:
That's not very encouraging. Victory for Nintendo and Retro to be sure, but not much of one for hardcore Wii players. It's not yet clear that anyone's paying attention (hopefully TS4 dev Free Radical will perk up).

@mian I worry about that myself. It's a great game that I'm having a lot of fun playing but I'm afraid there won't be anything else out there to fill the "awesome Wii game" void once I've had my fill of it.
