A lot of the industry folk are concerned with the longevity of the Wii, the latest of which is Silicon Knights' Dennis Dyack. He understands the console is popular right now, thinks it's hip, but wonders if the system can keep it up in the long run. Dyack seems to think the platform isn't capable of providing deep, rich experiences. We guess he didn't get to try Metroid Prime 3 yet. But, even if the console only provides Wii Sports-like experiences, if it sells well, is that really a problem? We may not like it in quantity, as we're more than happy to sit down (or stand up, rather) every now and then and throw down in Wii Sports, but overall want more meaningful experiences from the system. But, if we're not happy and a billion grandparents are picking up the system for Wii Sports or other quick, mass-appeal titles, is that really a bad thing?

The gap will likely widen between the Wii and its competitors, but millions upon millions of people will already own one and being enjoying it, demanding games. So unless 30-40 million people suddenly forget about their systems, I think the Wii's going to ride this wave of publicity into 2010-11, when Nintendo will release an updated Wii.

I BET HIS MOM CAN'T PROVIDE DEEP, RICH EXPERIENCES EITHER!!!
All jokes aside, this is totally a 'Whatever' moment. If you think you can't have a deep, rich experience without the power of a PS3 or 360 then you just don't have the love, man.
SO IF YOU'RE READING THIS DENNIS, CHEW ON THAT WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING HOME IN YOUR CAMARO

Dude, how many Pong consoles did they sell at whatever preposterous price (WP says $100, about $400 today) they charged when they first came out? They kept those selling for years, just based on novelty. The Wii gets the novelty factor *and* the fanboy base... I think it's going stay on top of the heap for a while yet.

I don't understand why people think that high end graphics is the way to last in the gaming market. I personally think the Wii will continue to hold the market for the next few years. The sales each month has to show that the Wii can run with the high end systems with few problems. Yeah sure the PS3 has BlueRay but that being it's strong point is also its weekness because they can't really drop the price without taking a hit in their pocket. Now the 360 has the power and the price to take the Wii off the top but an average of 8 hours of gameplay is what really hurts this system. Heck even the great Halo 3 I was able to beat before lunch on Tuesday and that is really their money maker. So when asking the question of which systems will last and which will not is high end graphics but short gameplay really the way of the future?

I think Nintendo will cut this console somewhat short, for longevity purposes, but they will embrace a late GBA-early DS strategy, where they actually support Wii and On platforms for about a year
So it won't go past 2010 without a replacement, 09 at the earliest, but will be supported by Nintendo until at least 2011

Deep, rich experiences? Oh please. I can play an Infocom game that provides a "deep, rich experience" on my old Commodore 64. This thing is totally unrelated to processor power or control scheme.
Whether someone will provide such a game on Wii is unknown. But there is absolutely no reason to think it is not possible.

He's just worried about its longevity so he can make a Wii game after Too Human comes out in 2042. Maybe developing for the Wii might not be too difficult for his incompetent team after they rake in the big bucks from their Epic lawsuit. I have no hope that Too Human is going to be a "deep, rich experience" because Eternal Darkness was a rather shallow, vapid gimmick. Surprise me, Dennis the litigious!

He is just bitter that the games he makes bomb. I love Eternal Darkness but it sold poorly, and so did Metal Gear for Gamecube. Bitter man who will be working on Too Human for decades to come its been in development for 10 years now?

If you were to play last-gen consoles today, would you say that the platforms aren't capable of providing deep, rich experiences? Exactly, The wii is just as good as any other console and just because it doesn't have graphics as good as 360 or ps3 doesn't mean the graphics suck, heck, there still better than xbox1 and thats good enough for me.

I had deep, rich experiences with the NES, SNES, Game Boy, PC, and Dennis Dyack's mom, so I don't really get what he's trying to say about power.
(See, the joke is that his mom has NOOOO RAM.)

If Nintendo intentionally stays behind the technology curve will this allow them to come out with there next gen console sooner than with past console releases. Say 3 years from now, maybe Wii will be replaced with a box with better graphics. By then those better graphics will be cheaper to produce, and more HDTVs will be available to take advantage of them.

There are still a lot of folks here thinking the jokes about the Wii being two Gamecubes strapped together are nonsense, because the Wii really has plenty of horsepower. No, it doesn't have that - unless you're comparing the Wii directly with the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. Compares with those consoles, the Wii is faster and has more RAM.
If you compare it to the PS3 and Xbox 360 it's a whole different ballgame. The crazy thing is how Nintendo got away with it. If MS had done their own Wii by putting the the original Xbox hardware in a smaller box and upgrading the original specs (733 Mhz Intel Celeron, 64 MB RAM, Geforce 3 GPU) to a 1.1 Ghz Celeron, 128 MB RAM and Geforce 4 TI, do you think it would sell today? How could such a underspecced machine possibly run modern games like Bioshock with all features still intact. Yet Nintendo fans believe that their Wii (which is just as fast/slow as this hypotheticial 1.1Ghz Celeron, Geforce 4, 128MB RAM Xbox 2) can keep up with the likes of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Well, it can't. No possible way. The Wii's hardware would have been fine in 2002, but it's completely outdated today. The discrepancy between it and the 360/PS3 will only get worse next year.
I'm a Wii owner, MP3 is my favorite game on the console, but I also recognize see the Wii's hardware limits. There will be quite a number of good Wii gaming coming up, but I just don't see it going strong for years and years. I think the Wii's popularity will be going down next year already.

Because systems like the Gamecube, original Xbox & PS2 aren't being bought or used at all nowadays... they're not fun by today's standards.
Imagine if they were still making PS2's or something, or if there were still games coming out for it... in 2007! Systems like that have no staying power.
Sarcasm aside, I'm tired of excuses. The good/excellent titles on those 3 systems proves that there can be good/excellent titles on Wii as long as devs can be imaginative enough to create them. It's about the devs, not the system, and if the devs are whining, that tells you more about THEM*.
*(Since I have to spell it out: They have no place being devs. Find another line of work where you don't have to think so hard.)

I can remember playing "deep rich" adventure games on my PC in the early 90's. What these games lacked in graphics they more than made up with in puzzles and storytelling. I've yet to play a console game that even comes close to the fun I had playing those games. Wii is the only console that could bring back those experiences.
People in the industry are completely out of touch with what people want.

After his whiny bitch-fest on EGM-Live, I can't take anything he says seriously. Yes Dennis, just because you can't make a game look badass in a ten year span the industry should change just for you and stop previewing games.. retard.

I have an original Xbox, an Xbox360, and the Wii. By far, the Wii is the most fun. I can play Tiger Woods with my buddies, or Wii Sports Golf with my 4 year old and 3 year old.
The Xbox360 is great for Madden on XboxLive vs. my buddies online, but its far too complex for me to really get into.
The Wii will be around far longer than anyone thinks. Partly because a huge number of people have no problem owning two consoles.
The Wii is fun, the 360 is cool and complex and will do alright, but the PS3 is probably doomed for failure (Atari 5200???).
Just my thoughts.
