We also see Tails excelling in what we assume is the trampoline event, in which players push buttons in a prescribed sequence to make Tails flop around in the air in a controlled manner.

Tails could survive a fall into lava unprotected in Sonic 2
A little stab is nothing to him,

Indestructible Sidekick Syndrome only affects when the character is a sidekick not an opponent or played. Also known as Beatrix trick.

Tails has shoes on....that counts as gear....even though it wouldn't protect you at all.

All together now...blunted tips.
You can even see from their design (why only eppee I'll never know) that they are trying to be very faithful to the sport itelf. Both fencers are in an approxomatly correct stance (though tails is in more of a foil stance than an epee, and as such, he could probably get smoked becuase of this...I'll never be able to spell eppee...)
How epee works:
Any part of the opponent can score a point. The swords are designed so that the little electrical button at the tip has to be pressed for a point to be scored. Technically, you don't need special equipment for epee (though a mask is nice to have), whereas in foil or saber fencing, you need a special vest to count if a hit was actually a point or not.
Tails is in a bad stance because A. his foot is wide open for attack. and B. because his sword isn't in a good position to parry.
Luigi isn't much better. Typically one extends the arm and THEN lunges at the oppontent...it just makes more sense that way (you don't leave yourself open for as much of an attack)
All in all, they are trying really hard...and doing decently enough, I suppose. But in a real tournament, they'd get torn to shreds.

Shame they didn't put fencing gear on the characters. I still don't know how to feel about this game, I want to wait for the game to come out before judging it and yet I can't help but think "Sonic's in 3D, this game is gonna suck".
