It's not a big secret that Animal Crossing will eventually resurface on the Wii -- Nintendo bigwigs have discussed the game openly before now -- but in what form?A "Japanese source" that tipped off UK magazine Edge reckons it could be as a social networking MMO, and that we'll all (presumably) be able to travel freely to one another's towns in numbers, nabbing alien fruit and hooking rare furniture from Nookingtons; you would have to be extraordinarily angry with the world to resist such a prospect.
This is strictly a rumor for now, but Edge's solid past record on such matters makes it a tantalizing one. It also makes perfect sense, really, particularly as some of the core concepts of Animal Crossing -- community, trading, communication, and so forth -- are what MMOs are all about.
One does wonder, though: is the Wii ready for such a game? Animal Crossing: Wild World on the DS is notoriously temperamental when handling network play, and so far the Wii's own online capabilities haven't dazzled. We shall, as they say, see.

With WiiConnect24, one could theoretically access the savegame on the other guy's Wii, and toy around with it (if the game was designed to "hack"(read/write) other Wii's savefile, but that would be a security problem. So most likely, it'll be limited to offline mail messages, as shown before.

This rumor isn't exactly a stretch. I would go as far to say, it should be an ASSUMPTION. To not include some sort of social/online feature in the 3rd game would be a slap in the face to everyone. There's no reason not to do it.
I hope Nintendo releases info, screens or a rough release date for this soon. They confirmed it back when the Wii was still a "Revolution" and yet we have still seen nor heard ANYTHING on the title.
I can't wait. All of my friends got sucked in, against their will, and my girlfriend still plays the game cube version.

I think its really more about the servers though isn't it? Ninty has the money to invest in some major stuff right now and they are surely smart enough to see that they better do it now before they lose their lead. Tie in Mii-integration with this and you could have a major draw. They like to sit on things until they have them just right like a perfectionist chicken so I wouldn't be surprised if this was Christmas next year at the earliest. But if they beef up their online game seriously, as this would indicate, then its 'all ova.'

Oh there's no doubt that this'll at least expand the online functionality, but how far is the question
full-blown MMO would be an interesting, and unprecdented step. Nintendo EAD specifically is one of the Nintendo divisions and subsidiaries most opposed to full-scale online play (as opposed to, say, NST or Next Level Games, both of which are more eager for it)

The game would have to survive as an offline title as well. Nintendo will not want to alienate a large portion of Wii owners who do not have their Wii's online. So I don't believe it will be *strictly* an MMO, but it should have some serious online networking.

There would not have to be servers to handle persistent worlds, just the travel between users' towns. It seems like the ability to travel to other peoples' towns whether or not they are playing at the time would be a huge draw. It would also be handy to have some sort of in-game address book that signaled, in real-time, whether or not other known users were currently in their own towns.
It's the "social networking" part that has me baffled. Are we to suppose that the game will be "AC:FB" or "AC:MS"? (Face Book or MySpace) I suspect not.
