The Nintendo DS really revived the point-and-click adventure genre for consoles. Because of the nature of the Wiimote, we're not surprised to see some point-and-click action hit the Wii, too. With games like
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure and
Harvey Birdman leading the way, we're sure that the Wii will see many others of this breed to come.
Will you welcome these types of games to the Wii with open arms, or spit at them as they walk through the door? Perhaps you prefer to keep your point-and-click portable? Or maybe you just (shudder) hate the genre in general?
So which is it: yea to point-and-click, or nay?

I haven't played a good point and click game in a while. If Zack and Wiki can start a p.a.c. revolution on Wii, I would weep tears of joy.

Point and click? As in a PC? As in... The Sims?
There are times when it's definitely good (PES 2008 looks to have a firm grip on P.A.C.) and times when its definitely... not (Eledees... good game but it was overdone).
Its all about finding a balance.

I'm GameFlying Zack & Wiki b/c it looks really fun. But it has a limited audience, I think. That's the problem--I don't think too many will take a risk on it because it doesn't sell to everyone. We'll see how Zack & Wiki does and then figure out if more will be coming like it...

Actually, I see Z&W as more than Point & Click. With the various ways they're using the Wiimote, it's really using the potential to do other things. Of course, I admit that PAC adventure games are among my favorites - Broken Sword, LucasArts, Sierra, etc all have a special place for me. I think part of that is that I can take my time to really solve a puzzle rather than maneuver all over the place, timing my movements, dodging bullets, etc. There's also usually a plot (unlike an awful lot of FPS games).
I'd love to see a revival of the genre, though, especially if they can come up with interesting ways to use the Wii's controls in a way that doesn't seem contrived.

Day of the Tenitical FTW. I really wish that this genre never died off in the first place. Some of my greatest memories of PC gaming come from the Lucas Arts games. They were funny, and had great puzzles.

LOL
"Leisure Suit Larry"
Not sure that one would fly with the ESRB. I could imagine performing certain "actions" in that game with the Wiimote.
If "hot coffee" (fully clothed toons doing sexual motions) can make a game AO...

#17: QFT. I've always loved the promise of point and click adventure games but find the gameplay formula that most classic adventure games adhere to mind numbing and entirely too straining on the hands over time. I think the wiimote easily and gracefully addresses the latter problem. The former is creating a game with a great story, characters, productions values, etc that doesn't devolve into going from room to static room waving your mouse around like an idiot searching for hot spots.
I think adventure games could be in for a real return to glory once developers can find unique ways to integrate the more tangible satisfaction from interaction in other genres of games in a way that feels right. Games like Indigo Prophecy are a good example of that evolution, though it still has a ways to go before the 'non-adventure'-ish aspects of the gameplay don't feel shallow and tacked on (the laughable combat in the otherwise very good Dreamfall for example). Zack and Wiki may very well be another important stride towards that balance and once I have a chance to catch up with my Wii games I'll definitely have to give it a go.
