Yesterday's big rumor is so interesting that we can't resist an excuse to discuss it further: Animal Crossing as MMO. What do you think of the idea? More importantly, how do you think it will work? Better yet, do you think it will work well? The idea is certainly intriguing; we like the idea of free access (or even limited free access) to the towns of others. It's something we've enjoyed from time to time in the DS version, and making it even easier could certainly be fun. But what do you think? Will it really add to the experience? Will Nintendo be able to pull it off, with their limited online experience? We have faith, but if there was ever a reason to doubt ....

No. I dont think it necesarily makes it a better game. The developer may overlook what makes the game fun (timed events, clever dialogue etc.) because theyre focusing so much on making it run smoothly as an mmo should.
It runs the risk of a being like sonys "home" where theres really nothing to do. and after the novelty wears off, it wont be played.

I would like to see this as an MMO if for nothing else as a starting point for showing what can be done and what needs to be done in online Wii games. You have to start somewhere and deal with a few problems so that in future the network will run smoother.

Friend codes didn't kill it on the DS - but we'll see what happens. The one thing that will stop from playing this is a monthly fee. I will not pay to play the game I already paid for.

If they could pull off an MMO for the Wii then I am game as long as it stays free to play. Animal Crossing as an MMO would be interesting to see and I would buy it. I just would love to see the online scene on the Wii take off to the point that at least a couple times a month we were getting a new one.

I think they damn well need to at least TRY.
They can't succeed at online if they never try. Maybe it will be a learning experience. But in 5-10 years, online will mean almost everything in games.
It's its own anti-piracy protection.
It's AI without the capital A, and without the programming.
It's replayability at a discount.
This is hugely important.

Here's the way I envision it, you'd have your suburb just like the GC or DS towns to play offline and there'd be a big city online, basically representing the server lobby. It'd have mostly the same things in the towns but more and bigger and with hundreds or thousands of other people around. People on your friend list can come into your town whenever the gates are open, but you can also invite new people you meet in the city to your town or vice versa.
The city could have a mall with a huge Nook's where you can get promo items and most requested furniture. An Able Sisters' with the top patterns from the community. An auction house. An arcade where you can play some classic games, ideally like trial versions of games on VC. A museum where people can show off art they've created in their own museum. Special holiday events and tournaments. So many possiblities.

I think that the original elements of a game need to stay, the gameplay kept you coming back for more.
But if you could take a train from your town to many others, perhaps meet at a big station, setup shops, trades, and meet people to invite back to your town or visit theirs. I think that this would be great.

I will be extremely disappointed if Animal Crossing does not turn out to be an MMO. Ever since I became aware of the possibility, I've been too excited. Part of what made it great was being able to connect with friends and well, it can be difficult to force your buds to play.
I agree that we'd all probably still want our own towns, and not be reduced to merely one character. Being able to travel and have common areas, as well as in-game events, holidays, contests, etc in the context of an MMO, would be priceless.
