Currently, the Wii barely has chance to make itself comfortable on shop shelves, such is its popularity with consumers. But that's not quite enough for Satoru Iwata and co. -- they want to rule the online roost as well. Problem is, quite a lot of people aren't terribly fussed about checking the weather or catching up on the news on their Wii, and let's not kid ourselves here: as far as online gaming goes, right now the Wii just can't measure up to some of the competition.
Something needs to be done then, something to get more people surfing this series of tubes using Nintendo's waggle box. Enter the firm's latest brainwave, a new Wii Shop feature which allows users to buy gifts for one another, such as a Virtual Console game. The lucky recipient will then receive notice of their present, and can start downloading it instantly from the Wii Shop.
"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games [other than by?] word of mouth," Iwata said of the new feature, which has no release date yet. "We also hope to spur more users to connect their Wiis to the Internet."
Is this the move that gets more people online on their Wiis? Do you envisage yourself using it? Share your thoughts, and we shall listen intently.

I highly doubt I'll use it more than once, if I actually use it once, but this raises quite a few questions.
A) Do you get charged if he never downloads the game?
B) What if he already had the game?
C) And if he doesn't have any space for more games?
I had more, but I kinda forgot them :P

here's my question.
Is this feature actually being set up to streamline the process for Nintendo to give gamers a FREE virtual console game as promotion? I.E. Is nintendo hinting at giving US gifts

@Nushio,
Just a guess, but I imagine that the transaction isn't final until the receiver starts the download. So, you wouldn't be charged until the download is executed, and he won't get it if he already has it or if he doesn't have the space, thus saving you the points.
@student,
WE can only hope! Really, it shouldn't be too hard to create a code entry spot to get free VC downloads - the problem is that users will likely share that code. I lot of things could be done to fix this, such as requiring the disc (say SMG) to be in the Wii to get the free download (SMB).

I fail to see how this will encourage any but the most charitable Wii owners to connect to the internet. I also don't see why Nintendo is wasting time on stupid little projects like this rather than concentrating on things that actually matter, such as:
- A decent online gameplay service
- Voice chat for said online games
- A more convenient friend system
- Compatibility of USB devices such as hard drives
- Third-party support for games with more depth than what is currently on the market, see "minigames"
@3. No, I don't think it's meant to "streamline the process". If they wanted to extend promotional gifts to Wii users in general, they could simply make the said promotional game free on the Wii Shop Channel for a limited time, a la Internet Channel. However, you are on to something, as it could be of use for gifts that become available with the purchase of certain games.

What a joke. I'm a diehard Wii owner, but having just picked up a 360, what the Wii needs is online play . . . online features that compete with the 360.
I'm okay with the game offerings since they picked up in September because I'm confident the number, quality, and variety will be there.
Let there be voicechat.

I guess I'll be the odd man out and admit that I think this is a great idea. Not a megaton announcement, sure, but still innovative and useful.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm still in touch with some of my high school buddies throught the Wii. I don't think it's a bad idea to send an old buddy a great $8 Super NES classic that he's probably never played before.
And I would be really happy to receive a VC title as a gift.
I think it's a great idea.

The problem is the whole "Let's try to keep online gaming as anonymous as possible" thing. people don't want that at all. sure, it helps children to play so the parents don't have to worry about the people their children have contact with. but even the new pokemon games have a voice chat so why can't wii games feature that? or even a text-based chat? or even for 16+ games? why, why why?

I'm hoping to buy my sister a Wii for Xmas, but I don't envision a time when I would send her free games. Of course if she wants to send ME free games, I'm not gonna complain.
But watch, a few months after this feature launches, Nintendo will report making 20 trillion more dollars.
Can't they afford to give their loyal users some free games? (I of course say this after getting that feather stylus for buying Phantom Hourglass...)

I can think of all sorts of niche games that could be promoted by their fanbases with this. Earthbound anyone?

The question is, can it be a game you already own. Like for example, if you download a game, beat it, and are bored with it, can you then give it to someone else, and have it deleted from your list?

Number 13 has the greatest idea of them all. Allow us to trade our VC games when we are done with them. But then again comes the problem of your buddy giving you his copy of the game instead of you helping Nintendo profits by buying it yourself.
I am with many others when I say that the next firmware update better have USB storage that expands the Wii's memory and not work like the SD cards do. Also they need to give us voice chat since so many online games are being announced that could really use it.

Everytime online is brought up in regards to Nintendo, a good amount of people jump on the hate train and begin bashing Ninty for not doing what Xbox Live does. what would be the point? you like Live, play Live games. It would be nice, but at least Nin10do is carving their own path and trying things that have not been done yet. If everyone just copy and pasted M$'s service (which is a great online service), we would have no creativity.

I shall truly look forward to online contests for VC games from NWF. And the inevitable VC games by surveys scams.
